Today I am celebrating the end of August and the beginning of the kinder gentler month of Sept. Also celebrating starting a brand new month with all of you.

She was raised there. I car pooled to Glen Rose with her for several years. We had three teachers and Doris, the Superintendent' s Secretary. Then she moved back to Paris. She passed away several years ago. I never knew her maiden name.

Marilyn, I've only lived in Paris for five years. Before that I lived in Howe, in the Sherman area, for 35 years. I was born and raised in Dallas.

Years ago I visited Glen Rose to see the dinosaur tracks along side of man.

Today September 1, 2016 is:

National Cherry Popover day!

I love popovers! You can always use cherry jam/preserve on your popover! and ...

Emma M. Nutt Day! - celebrates the first woman telephone operator in America.

A bit of history:

In 1878, the first telephone operator started working for the Boston Telephone Dispatch Company. You may be surprised to learn that the first telephone operator was a man, in fact all of the first ones were. On September 1,1878 Emma M Nutt became the first female phone operator, and from that point forward it’s been a woman’s industry. Emma M Nutt Day celebrates this pioneer and all she and her fellow operators have done for communication since!

As mentioned above, the first operators were all boys, and while we’re not huge fans of the phrase ‘boys will be boys’ in modern parlance, it was definitely something that was well believed back in the early days of telephone. Boys who were put in the position of telephone operators exhibited a basic lack of patience, and behaviors that included pranks and cussing, which just wouldn’t do for the people who were supposed to be the friendly voice of a telephone operator.

So it was that Emma M Nutt came to join the New England Telephone Company, and whose cultured, gentle voice set the standard for what an operator was supposed to sound like. She was a true rock star at what she did too, working a 54-hour week at a rate of $10 a month and memorizing every number in the New England Telephone Company directory. She then went on to work for the company for between 33 and 37 years, ultimately retiring. For a few years she even worked alongside her sister Stella Nutt, creating the first sister pair of operators in history too!*

A little side note about Emma: According to Emma, she was "very thankful that my first name was not Imma".

Thank you Emma, and all the operators that have followed for helping us keep in touch!

I am celebrating today because September 1st is the meteorological beginning of Fall!! Yep, I read about this on weather.com. The Astrological fall begins at the equinox which is about the amount of sunlight everyday. The meteorological measuring looks at the season average temperatures. Weather people know from extensive review that waiting until the astrological date says fall misses many of the early dips in temperatures which many of you have already seen yourself. So.....for all of you who are ready to kick off Fall, TODAY is the first day!!

Also, it is our first day of the Annual Farmgirl Apple Festival at MJF. Time to think about apple picking', apple pie and crisp makin', and apple cider drinkin'! LOL!!!

My grandmother was a telephone operator in their small town. She sat at the switchboard and plugged cords from phone to phone to connect calls. My mother always said that her mother always knew EVERYthing that was happening in the town - almost before anyone else. LOL!

I'm so glad that Fall has arrived. Now I wish the temperatures would find that out and start to cool off. I love apples, and I love my mother's Apple Crisp recipe. I guess I need to go to the store.

There are times I actually miss the days of party lines and one phone company in town. Life was less complicated then and I didn't need a young person to program a new phone or TV re-mote control. But I do celebrate my phone, internet, and TV all having the same carrier and each bill paid through the bank electronically. Less check writing is a very good thing to celebrate.

Winnie that sounds like a first day of fall to me. My friend up in the hills here said her leaves are falling and are changing color already. Yes fall is here. Good day to celebrate
There is a house down at the corner of my street that used to be the phone company of its day with the boards they used to plug a phone call into. What were they called?
Anyway my friend used to work there. Now it is just a house, neat history though.
We have come a long way from that and most of it is good because of faster communication with everyone and all my special friends on here.
Have a good Meteorological Fall day today everyone.

hugs

Darlene, just google weird holidays!

Today September 9, 2016 is:

Teddy Bear day!

Time to hug your Teddy Bear!

He's a picture of Pumpkin!

*** It just occurred to me that some of you may not know the story behind Pumpkin. You can read about it here: http://www.carolesquiltingetc.com/2015/09/shes-off.html

Love all these special days. My old 69 year old Teddy Bear is sitting in the antique rocking chair that was my grandmother's in my living room, where he always sits. Now I know he has a special day. LOL!
