My husband wanted to try to hatch out some baby Nankin Bantum chicks. So he bought a small incubator. At the time He only had five eggs so I put five Rhode Island Reds in too. Well at 6:30 pm we began day 20. It is 9:30ish and about thirty minutes ago I heard peeping. I hope they don't get too loud, they are on the cabinet in the bathroom. |

That's neat, Marilyn. My DIL used to put the incubator in the bathtub because they always use the shower. |

Denise, every time we order from the hatchery we end up with five or six little hens and 20 roos. Bantys are straight run. On big eggs you can sometimes tell which eggs are most likely pullets, and which ones are probably roos. It is not so easy with the little guys. Last year after something killed all but four of my hens, my husband told me to go to the feed store and buy the left overs. They had a bunch of colored egg layers that were about three weeks old, then they had another big bunch of Orpingtons and Jersey giants that were a week old. Then I ordered Rhode island Reds from the hatchery.Recently the two black hens died and one red hen. But I still have lots of hens. But last night in Tractor supply...they are so cute. No. No! Next year, I will spend the big bucks for Marans. I have wanted a few for years but when they can up and die so easily...I've never thought it made sense. But next year ... Perhaps. |

We specify we only want hens when we order Marilyn. Have never had a problem. We started with black austrolorps then when we got the next batch we got black sex links then our last one was Rhode island reds. |

I would love to see pictures of the baby chicks too. I love it when Tractor Supply has their baby chicks here and the baby ducks. Here they are so sweet.

Today is National Cereal Day this is info I found. March 7 Thursday is National Cereal Day, celebrated annually on March 7. According to nationalcerealday.com, the invention of breakfast cereal came in the mid-1800's to supplement a "poor American diet" packed with protein, booze and caffeine. Now, 2.7 billion boxes of cereal are sold every year. |

Well Mable finally got a friend, or foe...she did not understand what it was, and sat there watching from across the eggs. |

Denise, we order from Ideal Poultry. They claim to be one of only a few hatcheries who sell Nankin Bantum chicks. They only sell them as straight runs, and you must buy 25. Regular sized chickens...you can get pullets, food or straight runs. My experience with the sex link chickens was not good. So now I stay far away from them. |

Black sex links are good layers. I have not had any trouble with them. We have 5 of that flock left. The rest are RI reds. |

I had red and yellow ones when they were a it new thing. After a couple of years they began hurting each other. Yes they lay really good.I If I were to begin again, a brand new flock...they would all look alike. Chickens only tolerate their own kind. |

Now there are tnree. My husband was ready to dump the unhatched eggs last night. I told him we need to wait, and I'm so glad, because we have three, and now I hope more today! |
