I love little peeps too. My neighbor keeps chickens. When they first got theirs they had to take 22. Since we live in the city, we can't have Roos. 8 of their chicks were roosters.

HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY everyone!!!

It is a cold crisp morning, but it is supposed to be nice this afternoon.

I believe that Spring is about to begin, what day??? March 21st was always the first day of Spring when I was a kid. So that is Thursday. Happy Spring.

Don't you love it when the earth turns that light almost lime green color, then time mar.ches on as the leaves become a deeper shade of green.

Marilyn, you're right March 21st is the first full day of spring! Four more days. We have had warmer temps but the wind blowing has made it feel chilly. Looking forward to nicer days soon.

Observed annually on June 13 is National Sewing Machine Day. This day honors the invention of the sewing machine. It is hard to imagine having to sew things together by hand, stitch by stitch.

Skilled cabinet-maker and English inventor, Thomas Saint, received the first patent for a design of a sewing machine in 1790. It was intended for leather and canvas, was never advertised and no evidence of it, other than his drawings, could be found. In 1874, William Newton Wilson found Saint’s drawings in the London Patent Office, made adjustments and built a working model. The London Science Museum currently owns Wilson’s model.

Walter Hunt invented the first American lockstitch sewing machine in 1832.
John Greenough patented the first sewing machine in the United States in 1842.
Industrial use of the sewing machine reduced the burden that was placed upon housewives, moving clothing production from them and seamstresses to large-scale factories. This also resulted in a decrease in production time which caused the price of clothing to drop considerably.

I remember reading in Little House on the Prairie when Pa brought home their first treadle sewing machine. Laura was preparing to get married to Almanzo at the time. She said she would never see that LONG seam down the middle of the bed sheet again by hand!!! They were probably in 7th heaven with that machine and how quickly they could get their sewing finished!

I would love, once more, to sleep on sheets made from flour and chicken mash ... cloth sacks, the kind my grandma used her whole life.

When I was teaching at Huckabay, we had some Amish families. It was very humbling to see the little girl in my class arrive in her hand sewn, all crisply ironed, light blue dress. I questioned her about the straight pins that were used where we use buttons. Surprisingly she never got hurt.

Denise, I love this bit of sewing machine history you shared! I am still using my Mom's 1957 Singer machine and all of the attachements. I remember Mom was so excited to have a machine that does all these fancy stitches, embroiders, makes buttonholes and various decorative stitches. I don't even begin to use all of the possibilities but I love having the machine and the table it came with. When I open the drawers, they still smell the same that immediately takes me back to Oxford Road and learning how to sew on the machine at age 12.

Marilyn,
The Amish here use straight pins too. But their clothes are machine stitched on a treadle.

Winnie, I have my mom's machine. She got it in the 40s when she married. I love it. It has a nice cabinet and has all the attachments. She sewed a lot of clothes and things on there. She was a seamstress in a factory where my dad worked. They put fabric on huge bolts in the section he was in and she worked making ladies undergarments. I wish they still made those things in the U.S.

Many years ago at Canton first Monday trade days I purchased a bunch of sap buckets which I hung along the driveway fence. For years I planted flowers in them this year I planted flags in each one.
One year a mama wren raised her four little wren babies in one of the sap buckets.
I love that when I drive up, I see their beauty. Now if I could find the big flag I purchased long ago...I could perhaps find it a place to hang.

I use to hang flower boxes along the rail on our front porch and every years there would be a nest in it. We took the rail down now and I miss seeing those. I didn't get my bunting put up like I wanted for yesterday but need help so will se if we can get it up today.

I just walked out to the chicken pens, to check on the Newbies!
They are all alive!
Yesterday, very early, I netted all eight roosters, two at a time, and moved them to the Roo pen. I have been afraid of those pretty boys for years...but they were still a bit sleepy...I guess. I left the three little Nankin hens, who were protecting one little fart egg. I think they had decided that it they were in a pile the roosters would leave them alone.
The Easter Eggers, all female, 11 of them are eating, drinking, playing and enjoying the spacious big pen. Yesterday they had their first dust bath. Hopefully they will discover the roost soon.
And hopefully the three hens will be friendly soon. Yesterday they just sat and watched.
I also moved the black chicks, with the charcoal colored legs with feathers on the legs and feet.there are 9 of them. I think at least one is a bossy roo...we shall see. I wish I knew what breed they are.
