Sara did you grow the onions this year? Also I have never known anyone who made cantaloupe jam. Is it YUM? When you eat it in December, do you close your eyes and think, ohhhhhh this reminds me of summer.??

Marilyn I had to laugh at the thought of me growing onions. I'm a container gardener. The grocery store had them on sale for 99 cents@.

This was the first time for me making cantaloupe jam. I got the recipe rom 2015 BH&G Canning Mag. It has a good flavor but little too sweet for me. Everything seems to be too sweet for me lately. I will make it again and when I do I will use half of the Chill-over because it set up firm and the recipe said it was to set up loose. It won't last to winter. Only made 3 8oz jars and I have already been in one.

My husband loves cantaloupe, do you think he would enjoy the jam?
Of course if you think he would enjoy it...Then I must ask you to share the recipe.

I like it and I think others would too. Mailman has already come so I will copy it and mail tomorrow. The hardest thing about the recipe is finding a good cantaloupe. I smelled it and it faintly smelled like cantaloupe but it wasn't juicy but okay for jam. Most of the cantaloupes had no smell at all.

The watermelon for the watermelon rind wasn't tasty either. What was left over after canning went to the birds and butterflies.

The best cantaloupe come from Pecos, Texas in July. I read an article about them a few years ago when they did not arrive on time. It said the weather must be HOT so the cantaloupe are sweet, juicy and oh so good. I guess growing up in west Texas (Snyder) spoiled me. I had never eaten a striped watermelon or anything but Pecos cantaloupe until I married. We had black diamond watermelons...They were huge...and so good.
Why are memories from our childhood so much better than reality?

When I lived in Howe my neighbor gave me an Israeli cantaloupe from west Texas, and it was the best cantaloupe I have ever eaten.

WOO HOO! I got mmy care package from Sara today. She and I bartered - she sent some of her jam, dried onions, pickled watermelon rind, and spices: chili, red pepper flakes, celery salt, and MJF Indian Blend. In trade, I made her a Jubilee apron with large pockets using fabric with chickens and fall theme. Here are pictures of my goodies and of her aprons. (I surprised her with a mini apron out of the same fabric with a chicken on the front.

And for being FGOTM she also included a cute Jubilee flag that she added a chicken and a mini apron to - and some yellow and white lace.

Thank you SO much, Sara, for the barter, flag and lace.

Linda, thanks for posting a picture of the apron and mini apron. I love them! The apron fits perfectly and it will be my YellowRose Cottage canning apron.

Glad the jars made it to you without breaking. Enjoy the goodies and let me know how you like them.

Sara, where did you find tiny jars and tins? I have a doctor's appointment in Fort Worth soon. Did you go to a container store?

The jars are half-pint jars. And the tins are very nice, with a see-through top.

The tins I found on Amazon. I bought that size and a smaller one.

The jars are from Ball. I went to their site to copy their address for you and checked and they no longer have that jar on line. I have not seen it in the stores. It may come back - I hope so - it's one of my favorite jars and suites my small batch canning. I'm partial to cute wide mouth jars.

Adorable Aprons! Cute jars Too! Wish I could stay longer, but since we are having company for dinner guess I'd better get back in the kitchen. Lol. I'd rather visit longer.

Me too Sara. I have some from the past. I use them for any and all purposes. Then I do a big hunt when canning time rolls around, trying to find them and wash them up.
Thanks for the info.

Marilyn here's Ball's site http://www.freshpreserving.com/home

I get e-mail from them when there's a on-line sale. Have to pay shipping but I figure it's worth it to me not to have to traipse all over town looking for just the right jar and not finding it. They have jars in their on-line store that are never in the stores.

Linda, after reading your post I went to the front page and that's a old picture of the jar. If you click on the picture it's about pectin. If you click on jars and go to 4oz jars it's no longer being offered. I'm not sure how many I have left. Some have been canned and not opened. A few may be in the cottage. I need to get a handle on my canning jars. I have them scattered all over the place.

My kitchen will be quiet today - no fermenting, drying, mixing going on. But, I will tackle the shelve in laundry room panty where I keep mix size canning jars. I do my best to keep it straight but when I am working I tend to move them around to get to the one I want and they get all jumbled up. I need to do the same thing in the YellowRose Cottage where most of my jars are kept, but can't run fast enough these days to beat the rain so I will save it for dryer days.

That is strange, Sara. I just went there again - and I found the link I had clicked on before, and the jars are there. Here's the link.

Linda the strange thing is I got the sizes confused. I've been calling them 4oz jars but they are 1/2 pints. Thanks for keeping me straight. Must have been another senior power serge. Gotta blame it on something.
