Yesterday I had the guys move the big chest freezer from the garage to the house. I have downsized my pantry and so had the room for it. I went today and bought stackable baskets to store things in so I can reach everything and nothing will get lost in the depths. Going to work on my inventory so I can see what needs to be used first and I can keep things rotated this year when I start putting garden things in there.

Carole that soup looks wonderful. Wonder if I can convince my husband to try soup with butternut squash. I've used all the other vegetables in soups. Hope your friend is feeling better.

Made chicken noodle soup today. My husband really likes soups. Leftovers for tomorrow.

Winnie your quiche sounds very good. 82 degrees not so much lol..I can wait for the heat. Lol...

Sara I've been looking at Mary Jane's Wild Bread Cookbook, debating if I'd use it very much. Will check out the chat room you posted.

Will prep potatoes, carrots, onions to can tomorrow for a soup mix in qt jars. I usually can only pints but for soup mixes I use qt jars.

Brenda, I ordered the book and it should arrive later this month. I've got a bread machine so I figured I should use it or give it away. Also I would like to learn to make sour dough bread. Between the book and chatroom I should be able to do it. Will be great to have MaryJane and Ashley to go to with questions.

Have one banana peel in dehydrator to grind in blender to put around roses.

I received my copy of MaryJane's new Bread book and it looks very interesting and fun. This will be a whole new project to take on as I have never done a dough mother with is the foundation for every recipe. It will take careful reading on my part as I have made bread for years but never using this specific technique. The photos of all the breads look just beautiful and delicious. If anyone here gets started on this technique, I hope you will post how it goes. I have to admit is all seemed a bit intimidating on my first flip of the pages.

Canning 4 pts Midnight black beans - an extra fancy turtle bean - that's what the pkg says - not quite sure how fancy a bean can be

Sara,
Do you buy the dried beans and then can them? I have never tried that mostly because it takes a pressure canner to do them. I have only used one twice. The first time my mom helped me with venison when they were visiting and JT got a deer. The second time I did venison on my own. I probably need to buy a newer canner as the one I have is quite old and I know I need a new ring for it by now.

Denise I use dried beans - soak over night - drain - cover with spring water and cook for 30 minutes then follow pressure canner directions.

I cook them with no salt. The black beans I can use in Tex-Mex dishes and black bean soup.

It is handy and since I cook for one I don't have to eat a whole pot of beans. I can pints.

1 lb dry beans = 4 pints or 2 qts - I always have a little left over I finish cooking for that day's lunch.

2 lb dry beans = 8 pints or 4 qts or a mix of sizes

All my jars sealed which is a very good thing.

Today I put chili on the menu and then I cut up some of those wonderful Plant City, Fl. strawberries to have over angel food cake for dessert tonight. I thought I might have to toss a few because I bought them on Saturday but not one had gone bad.

I'm thinking since it is a rainy, dark day here that it would be good to make my mom's refrigerator soup in the crockpot.
So easy because as in it's name I just start using what is leftover in the refrigerator as long as it can go in soup.
My mom's was always tasty no matter what went in there. Mostly vegetables and leftover burger.

The other day I decided to try my Tofu press. I never thought I needed one until I bought one. Not sure how I lived so long without one! lol Anyway, I just made a giblotte (which if French for a medley of vegetables). Looked at what was in the fridge and tossed it together with some herbs and spices. It was yummy!

I do have some left overs that I will be enjoying during the week.

Catch you all later!

I have MaryJane's Wild Bread book and have started the Mother. Her Wild Bread site has really helped me because MaryJane and Ashley are there to give me advise and answer my questions. Sat I will make pancakes and hopefully by next Sat it will be ready to make bread.

I have snack tomatoes and asparagus fermenting next to the mother so my counter is busy with 2 qt jars and a bowl of good things.

I made hambone broth yesterday with a hambone my sister gave me from her Easter dinner. It's in the fridge and I won't take the fat off until I am ready to can it Fri or Sat. Fat is a good seal. Will use the ham I cut from the bone to can dried pinto beans and one other heirloom dried bean - maybe one of the white beans.

Denise, I eat the tomatoes right out of the jar. Asparagus is my first try at it - Lisa "nubidane" on MJF did it so I am doing it too - I hope I like it and will use it for a cold side dish or pickle. Come to think of it Lisa was the one who got be started fermenting snack tomatoes - FarmGirl see - FarmGirl do.

Would you mind telling what you do?
I would love to try it. I love asparagus. How long does it last that way. I am the only one here who eats it and it will be the first thing ready.

After I washed and trimmed the woody end part off I stood them in a quart jar. Added fresh thyme, some red onion, and garlic. What is added is optional. Mixed 3 Tbsp of Kosher salt in 1 qt spring water (non-chlorine water) and poured over asparagus to cover. Must be kept covered with water or mold will set in. You still might have to skim white mold off the top as it ferments. Set in cool dark place. I don't have a dark place so I cover jars with paper towels, cheese cloth, or thin material - whatever I have on hand.

White mold is okay - just skim off.

Black mold is nasty bad and batch must be thrown out.

Mold was one of the things I had to come to grips about - sometimes I have it - other times I do not.

I started the asparagus on Mar 31 so it's been a week - will taste it today to see what is happening - If I like it I will put lid on jar and put in fridge - will keep for several months if kept topped off with non-chlorine water. If not to my liking I will let it ferment a little longer.

Will do the same for the tomatoes.

Sometimes batches just go bad and I never know why but I do like the process & finished results when it's good.

Denise I just now tasted the tomatoes and asparagus. The tomatoes aren't there yet - not fizzy inside. The asparagus is crisp with a good flavor. Will let them go another week - I think they should be ready but will have to wait and see.

I keep salted water on counter - ratio 2 Tbsp to 1 qt non chlorine water to top off fermenting veggies.
