Sadly, I don't have my mom's gingerbread cookie recipe. I will have to look up one of the internet. I think she used to use the recipe on the jar of molasses which was Brer Rabbit Molasses that is not available down here. Not sure they even have that company anymore. My mom's gingerbread were a soft cookie and she would always give them some icing details and raisin eyes. I think I am going to look for one of those cookie cutters that has all of the details of the gingerbread cookie in the mold so you can skip the icing part.

Tonight will be our first freeze of the year so I emptied the water bath canner and watered all my plants.

The jalapeno pepper jelly set up which is a good thing. It's notorious for not setting up. I've made more jalapeno pepper syrup than jelly.

The pickled beets have a hint of ginger which I like and all the lids sealed so I am happy with my first attempt putting up pickled beets.

Linda, thanks for the kind words but I'm a small batch canner. Three pints pickle beets and 5 half pints of the jelly. I leave the quarts to my sister who puts up row after row of good eats.

I bought four bunches of beets but they were small so I only got 3 pints - oh, I did eat one when I was peeling them after roasting. It was so good and roasted beets is a favorite of mine.

This weekend I need to make cranberry sauce for our Thanksgiving feast this Thursday. We are hosting! Looking forward to seeing everyone from Dh's side of the family. DH has been busy preparing the turkey. We are cooking it ahead of time and warming it up. I know it breaks with traditions but it makes life so much easier when you have 30 people to serve. We are cooking 1 turkey and a massive turkey breast. Gravy etc will be made before dinner.

Sara do you cut your beets in wedges to roast them? I have roasted butternut squash, Brussels sprouts sweet potatoes, asparagus, etc but not beets. Do they taste like dirt after roasting. I like beets fresh, grated on a saflad.

How long do you roast them and what temp.

The pickled beet recipe called to wrap whole beets individually in tinfoil and roast at 400 on a cookie sheet until tender. In my oven it took an hour and half. I usually roast beets without wrapping in foil but I like wrapping better. After they cooled a little they were easy to peel and slice.

They are delicious roasted and don't taste at all like dirt. I should know I ate my share of mud pies as a child.

Thanks, Sara. I will try that.
My kitchen is about to make more fruit cake. The first batch is gone.We ate two, gave two to Wade and Julie and also to our neighbors who gave us so much okra.
I also have fudge to make, and Martha Washington's. We had our "feast" at school Friday. One of the centers was a hot air corn popper popping lots of corn. I brought it home and bought almond bark to melt and pour over it. The grandkids love it.

I cooked 2 large skillets of cornbread yesterday while DH watched Lily June, while I took it in and out of the oven. As you know those cast iron skillets are heavy and hot! So now I have it ready to mix my Granny's dressing Thanksgiving Day.

With the Summer heat and MS and having the Grandbaby 2 days a week, I didn't do much canning this year. First year I didn't make my Strawberry Jam in about 10 years!

I got hungry reading everyone 's Post!!

Today I bought the ingredients to make hot white chocolate coco mix. Everything was on sale so it was the perfect time to make it. Will have to sterilize the pint jars today and make sure they are dry for tomorrow.

I make my own kitchen wipes using unscented baby wipes, white or ACV, and essential oils. Today I used lemon oil and white vinegar. They're stored in a plastic container under the sink. They come in handy too to wipe Annie's kisses off the windows.

Today I am butchering the venison we were given yesterday, as well as making two different types of venison sausage. I probably won't get the butchering done today and will have to finish up tomorrow, but I certainly will not complain about free meat! The gentleman we got them from gets deer tags from the state every year due to having a beef farm... the deer will tear up his hay stacks, as well as urinate all over them, messing up his food for his cattle. He generally does not eat the venison, but rather gives it away.

Shannon, good for you for tackling the butchering. Venison is a very good gift indeed. If you have any left over you may want to try making jerky. I haven't gotten around to making jerky but have always wanted to.

Shannon -

That is wonderful that he will give you the meat. What a special gift!

Have you ever butchered venison before? Do you have an out-building where you can do this? I'm sure there are specific guidelines for butchering the meat so it is safe to eat. I sure wouldn't want to tackle something that large for the first time. You are really jumping into your new farm way of life. Good for you!

Way to go Shannon. My DIL has one brother who is disabled now, but his son hunts and they butcher the deer. He makes the most awesome deer jerky I have ever tasted. They live in northern Wisconsin. Her co-worker always hunts deer, here in Texas.. He bought a meat tenderizer about twenty years ago. He always gives her some of his deer meat. The chicken fried steak is so tender you can cut it with a fork, and it is tasty too.

I have had venison steak once and venison summer sausage. I thought they were both very good. It is great that you have someone who gives you venison.
