We had a bit of blessing rain last night. When I went out this morning's my the ground was set but no mud...no puddles. Julie said we had 3/10 the of an inch. When I was doing the barn chores it was so easy to walk because I wasn't sinking into the deep sand. That is when I finally realized that the ground was so dry it slurped up every drop! Duh!

Winnie,
Thanks for sharing your picture and recipe. It sounds good. I don't waste my apple peels either. Since the pectin is close to the peel I use them to make apple jelly. My mom showed me how to cook them down with water and strain for the juice. Very easy. She always threw the core and all in to get all the apple goodness out.
It makes me feel good when I can use the things I learned from my mother.

This morning over on MJF Farm Kitchen "What is Everyone Canning" Michele posted her recipe for using crab apple juice as pectin. She gave the ratio of crab apple juice to juice/fruit to be canned.

I wonder what crab apple juice tastes like. My mother in law had a crab apple tree in the back of the side yard. It was there when they bought the house. I don't remember her ever using them.

The pear butter yield 4 1/2 pints and one 4oz. Gotta say those were the ugliest pears I ever saw. Thick and rough skins but they sure did make a tasty pear butter. I like not having to peel or core the pears and after cooking putting through a sieve. Will definitely use that method again.

Sara, glad to hear that your pear butter was a success! I bet it will taste good on morning toast come chilly mornings. Maybe it would be good on top of a pork chop too?

I have a recipe for pear honey that calls for a small can of crushed pineapple. I've made it and it is good. Is that the recipe your Granny used?

I would so love to make a pot of soup but it will be another 100 degree day here. Not exactly good soup weather except for gazpacho which DH refuses to eat.
The summer my parents were in Europe for a conference in 1958 our babysitter made a jam concoction with pears, pineapple and maraschino cherries. It was yummy.

My husband made a pot of chicken Gumbo in a crockpot to cook on low overnight. The smell is already get to me. Want some right now. The crockpot doesn't heat up the kitchen so bad. He said it just felt like a gumbo meal.LOL

I was so hungry at eleven am today, and since it was cool and rainy I made soup hamburger meat and veggies. I hope it fit my diet because I had some for lunch, snack and supper too.

Marilyn, hamburger veg soup is one of my favorites. Got a pot of soup on the stove - butternut squash, potatoes, leek, garlic, fresh herbs, and homemade chicken broth with lemon. I eat soup year round. In the winter I like roasted veg in soup. Looking forward to cooler days and using my oven again.

My dad loved hamburger soup and we ate it often when he was here with us. I still make it but have to freeze leftovers because there is always more then the two of us can eat.
I'm looking forward to making soups and stews again come cold weather.

I was given more pears enough for 2 batches of pear butter and these are pretty ones. The mornings are cooler now so if I'm out in my Yellow Rose Cottage by 4 or 5 a.m. I will be able to can the pear butter.

First batch has brown sugar, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and lemons. It cooked overnight in slowcooker. When it cools I'll put through sieve and can in the morning.

Second batch will have organic maple syrup, brown sugar, and lemons. It's in the slowcooker now.

Only used 1/2 brown sugar for each batch so the pear butter shouldn't be too sweet.

Denise, I really like making pear butter because I don't have to peel or core them.

Later on I may try my hand at making apple butter.

I managed to get 4 loaves of whole wheat bread made today. It smells so good in here. It has been cool today so was a good day to do it. I also made a batch of cranberry orange muffins. Put most all in the freezer.

Denise, fresh made bread has the best aroma and it tastes even better. Well Done!

Canned last batch of pear butter this morning. This batch just had pears, a little brown sugar, and organic maple syrup. It's my favorite - real maple flavor.

Your pear butters sound delish, Sara. If our schedule would ever slow down I might can some butters.

Linda for me butters are the easiest to can. No pealing or coring. Putting cooked food through a sieve is soooo easy. Your electric water bath canner will be handy too. Heat it to warm the jars and then crank it up to can.
