Hi Ladies - After a break from doing badges, due to the death of my father, I think we should get back into doing monthly badges. Does anyone have any goals already for fall in terms of badges? I'll wait to hear from a couple of you, and then I'll choose one for us to be motivated in doing together :)

I'm going to do Apples for sure. I haven't done that one yet, and I'll be getting quite a few apples this year. I think right now I'm just interested in focusing on kitchen personally, which is kind of weird because I currently have such a restrictive way of eating. I still really love baking even though I don't eat anything baked!

I was thinking the same thing...Apples! I think we'll do the Apples then this fall, and one other one - probably the canning one. Anyone else working on something right now?

This sounds like a great idea! I need some motivation and knowing that we're all working on them together and hearing about what each of you did to earn your badge will be fun and inspiring.
I think Apples sounds like a good one and with everyone finishing up their gardens in the next month or so, Canning would be good, as well. I'm thinking that it might be easy to work the Putting Away for Winter into this, as well. You are supposed to freeze 3 types of produce, dehydrate 3 types of produce and can 1 type of meat using a pressure cooker. And then making 2 dishes using foods that you canned, froze and dried.

Here's what I'm going to encourage us all to do this fall:

1. Apples
2. Canning
3. Putting Away for Winter

Let's try to get these done by the end of November, and then we'll have December off, and in January I have a few in mind that I think would be great to do to help get rid of the winter blues!

Make sure to post here your work in progress!!

I also applied for Putting Away for Winter - Beginner. I've been working on Canning, all three levels, and hope to finish that up in the next day or two. I'm hoping to complete the Apples one with my sister - she's coming to visit next week and we'll go to an apple orchard and go picking. I should be able to complete all three badges once we go there. And lastly - I've did research on the intermediate badge for Putting Away for Winter, and have discovered I can dehydrate in my oven (although maybe it's not very energy efficient?!?) but would like to try it as the purchase of a dehydrator is not possible right now.

Wow Joyce! Way to go! I have plans to go apple picking next week with my kids and another homeschool family. I just saw that Sunday is "Farmgirl Apple Pie Sunday" so kind of a bummer I'll miss that one!

Oh!! I think I may have to make an apple pie for Sunday. I think that I can get some local apples at the farmers market on Saturday...

Thanks, Erin :)

Joyce, that is awesome! I am so proud of you reaching your goal!!!
I've been working away at the that one, also. For some reason I thought it would be one of the more difficult ones to get done, but it really hasn't. You've inspired me to keep going!
I hope that you and Erin and families have fun with your apple picking!
I have 2 apple trees and 1 grafted multi fruit tree that I've had out here all summer, just "temporarily" planted. I've been waiting until I can figure the best place to put them. Our 3 grandboys will be here on Sunday afternoon and I thought that might be a good time to get the trees put in their permanent homes and take pictures of the boys next to them so we can watch all of them grow!

Debbie, that's a great idea!

Joyce, I also noticed the "self-sufficiency" badge is similar to "putting away" and "canning". So, some might be able to knock that one out too.

Joyce - I am so proud of you for meeting your goal for getting Schoolmarm for Cleaning Up!!! I still have two more badges to earn in that category and they look to be a long time away still! LOL.

So I just looked at my badges... I already completed the canning, putting away for winter, and self sufficiency ones. For the apples one, I will be able to complete part of it for the expert level, but we aren't ready to plant any apple trees, so I guess I'm waiting on that one until hopefully next year. With winter coming, I think I'm going to try to finish up some badges in my garden... specifically I'm going to finish up intermediate for gaining ground, all three 3 R's, intermediate and expert for birds, and beginner and intermediate for bugs. I only have three days to finish typing them up and turning them in, lol, so we will see if I succeed!

I did not get my apple tree moved to its permanent location, so that is going to have to wait until spring. I did get all of my Putting Away for Winter badges finished and applied for! My Canning badges were finished before. I thought I was going to have a bunch of moose meat to can but the weather didn't cooperate for the hunters this year...:( Hopefully we will get an elk or deer in a couple of weeks.

Debbie what does moose taste like? We have white tail deer. That is the only wild game.

It's kind of it's own flavor
..more like beef to me than venison or elk. I really like it!

I'm still plugging away. I seem to have my hands in a lot of different pots right now... thinking I may need to back off a little or I'm going to get burnt, hahaha. Come January things should be ore calm, but that it still quite a ways away!
