Judith - Here's how we made them. I bought the chain at Home Depot and it was $.99 a foot; it takes about 6-7 feet per rain chain, depending on how you attach the cups and other items. The cups and the cat toys I got at Dollar Tree. These directions may be a bit confusing and if you need more explanation, just give me a phone call. PM me and I will send my number.
To start, my husband drilled a hole in the bottom of all of the cups. Since I was making this up as I went along, the two chains I made were made slightly differently. Marilyn's chain was done first, and for Marilyn's chain we separated a link of the chain from the next link and then closed it back, and then used wire to reconnect the two links through the hole in the bottom of the cup - a bit tricky but do-able. We did this about every 10-12 links and added 5 red cups in this manner. In between the cups, about every 5-6 links, we separated a link and the next link and put each of these into opposite ends of a cat ball toy and then closed them back up. Then I tied a thin fabric scrap strip under each cup.
For my chain, I punched a hole under the rim of the cups, separated the chain, and hooked the cup in the link and then closed the link back up. I added the cat ball toys the same way as above, but am thinking for another chain I may just separate one link and only attach the balls at the top of the ball and they will hang at an angle.
These were a lot of fun to make and I've been thinking about other things that could be added to the chain. I would like to find (probably at Dollar Tree) some plastic birds or small beachy items that could be wired to the chain links. I did see a rain chain on Pinterest that was made using the shaped metal cookie cutters, and I am also thinking that if I can find some Tupperware cookie cutters at a garage sale I may get them to put on a rain chain. I have the Tupperware Cookie cutters, and do not use them, so maybe I should just make a rain chain with them. LOL!
If anyone has any other ideas of things to add please let me know. And if you make one, please post a picture. |

Linda -- Thank you. I will head over to Tractor Supply when I get a chance; it's 10 miles closer than Home Depot or Lowes and there is a Dollar store near there. Sounds like fun and I may be able to get it done before it starts raining in October or so. |

Have fun! HD had a plastic chain that came in white and yellow - nice and bright - but you can't pry the links apart so things would need to be wired on.
Were the directions decipherable? LOL!

Can't wait to see what you make, Judith. I had fun "designing" Marilyn's rain chain. |

I posted this twice and it hasn't shown up. Here are the things that Marilyn made me for the summer swap. She planned ahead - it is too hot and humid to sit on the patio now, so she made fall themed table topper, coasters, and reusable "paper" towels. I love it all. Thank you Marilyn. |

Linda, What a beautiful package! I really enjoy using the "un"paper towels. Marilyn makes such nice things. I think I may give the rain chain a try. |

Winnie, when I went to the post office last Saturday (July 18), it had not arrived. Which I thought was strange given that you had sent the package a couple of days earlier than I sent yours ... you had already received your package.
With mandatory OT, I have not had a chance to go to the post office. Not even sure I'll have a chance to go this Saturday. My apologies, but when I leave to go to work, the post office is closed for lunch.
Pumpkin is coming over this weekend, looking forward to some down time.
Again, I do not mean to be rude ... and I do apologize .... by the time a get back from work it is 1 am and I just want to crawl into bed. So I apologize for not keeping up at the moment ... with a 60 hours work week, I'm exhausted!
It is 12:30 pm here and I need to leave for work. Enjoy our day!
Catch you all later. |

Wow Carole you are busy! Since all this Pandemic started the Postal Service has really gotten slower, it’s crazy out there. Just thought I would say something. You sound very busy and exhausted, good to hear from you.

I went to the post office yesterday and Winnie's package was waiting for me. They were all wrapped with a little message.
I quickly got to work ...
Thank you so much Winnie for the lovely items. They are perfect. The iced tea sounds lovely. Looking forward to enjoying my goodies on the porch.
Cheers!

Iced tea is a year round favorite in the south, Carole. Our local drive thru eating places sell it by the gallon...all sugared up! |
