I am wondering what your ladies' thoughts are on earning badges???
Is this something that you are interested in?
Do you prefer to work independently?
Do you like to work on some as a group?
Does anyone need help or have any questions??

For example, years ago we did a shopping bag exchange as a group so we could fulfill the expert level of the Shopping Green badge. It was fun and easy!

My schedule is wonky and so is my budget right now (half of our cows are dried up getting ready to have their babies) so it's hard for me to commit to swaps at the moment. I'm going to try and work on some badges this year, but I will admit it's not my #1 priority. If there are a few wanting to work on a badge together - as long as I have the stuff on hand I'll try and join in. I'm also happy picking my own and sharing my progress with everyone. I know that's not a very helpful answer LOL! But, that's where I'm at right now.

Debbie I have not decided yet where I want to start, but I do want to begin. With my schedule I would prefer to dabble on a few on my own, and not feel stressed to keep up with a group. Although, after I get some experience with them, I would gladly join in on a group project. Once I get started, I'm sure I will have questions, and will definitely reach out to you and others for help and advice. Thank you!!

Independent probably works best for me too, due to crazy and busy schedule. Also, not everyone may like the same thing or want the same badge. I do think setting goals and sharing our questions and results as a group is great and encouraging. I got into MJF years ago JUST TO EARN BADGES, & have yet to send off for one !!! Lol. Encouragement with the group would be something we could ALL do while we all earned the badges we wanted. Maybe once we all badge Newbies earned a few, then maybe everyone could vote on a badge that everyone liked or could do to do as a group.

Working on merit badges is on my list of things to do :) I would be happy to work together with anyone - and certainly share what I learn with my Wildflower friends when that's part of the requirements.

:)

Ok, I have some ideas. How about we use this space to share what we're working on? Ask questions? Invite others to share in a badge?
I know that I usually work independently on badges but doing a group thing is fun sometimes, too. They're supposed to be fun and no stress!!!

I think that sounds fantastic. Hearing and seeing what others are working on is a motivator for me :) I'm currently working on the beginner butter badge. I have a couple more to finish up that I read books for but I can't remember the name of the badge. One is about Bees (I read The Secret Life of Bees) and the other is the chocolate badge. Very interesting book about the history of chocolate! I don't currently have any questions. Just need to find the time and use it productively LOL!

I went through my binder (I made a note to print out the 2022 badges to add to my pages). I have so many tabs - I'll go back through this weekend and pick a couple to focus on and let you all know.

Have a great weekend Wildflowers,

I've applied for 3 badges - all beginner levels. The first was Carpe Cocoa. The second was Farmgirl Gratitude. And the third was the butter one. Part of the butter one is to look up the history of butter and report a couple fun facts you learned. I thought I'd share a couple of the fun facts with everyone: Irish butter was placed in barrels and buried in bogs for storage. Today those ancient barrels (some dated to 400 BC) are the most common archaeological finds in the Emerald Isle. And, margarine was invented before WWII. Napoleon held a competition in 1869 looking for a cheap, plentiful substitute to butter. The winning recipe was made with beef fat, milk, and salt. A third fun fact is that in the 12th century the King of Norway demanded a full bucket of butter every year as a tax.

Not sure what I'll work on next - might be the intermediate level of the butter one since it's the actual butter making and I've been doing a lot of that lately (just made 2 rounds of it today!) I think I'm going to look through the garden section. I'm sure there's something in there I'm going to be doing :)

You’ve been busy, Heather!!! It sounds like butter was as loved and enjoyed back in the day as it is now! The chocolate book was pretty interesting, too… chocolate and butter….yum!

Sometimes I think busy is my middle name LOL! Although I don't know what I'd do if I didn't have something to do :)

I just earned the beginner level of The Secret Life of Bees Merit Badge. There are a couple of garden ones I'm working on but I can't remember off the top of my head what they are. I know one is about herbs. Is anyone else doing any badge work right now?

I just found my merit badge notebook again in the midst of unpacking. Yay! Looking forward to working on a few this fall and maybe even doing a few together.

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend,
