Was just thinking about and remembering the May pole and tussie- mussies. Just a little info I found on these two subjects.

The tussie-mussie

They have medieval roots. A “tussie” is a nosegay, a Middle English word for a small group of flowers held together in a little bouquet and that was held at nose level; “mussie” refers to the moss that was moistened and put around the stems of the flowers to keep them from wilting. Originally meant to protect the wearer from noxious odors produced by the poor bathing and sanitary conditions of former times.
The tiny silver vases for a tussie mussie that could be pinned to a bodice.

As times moved forward, the small personal bouquets known as tussie mussies became more of a fashion accessory than a health necessary.
The tiny silver vases for a tussie mussie evolved into the larger silver bouquet holders for bridal arrangements. This is the modern meaning for the term: a cone shaped vase that serves as a bouquet holder.

The May pole

Originally, the maypole was a living tree. Over time it usually became a tree trunk of the correct height, age, and type (usually pine or birch). Some say that the tree represented masculine energy, and the ribbons and floral garlands that adorned it represented feminine energy.
Did you ever dance around the Maypole as a child? Wrapping a Maypole with colorful ribbons is a joyous tradition that still exists in some schools and communities.

Ancient Celts danced around the tree, praying for good crops and fertility. For younger people, there was the possibility of courtship. If a young woman and man paired by sundown, their courtship continued so that the couple could get to know each other and, possibly, marry 6 weeks later on June’s Midsummer’s Day. This is how the “June wedding” became a tradition.
In the Middle Ages, all villages had Maypoles. Towns would compete to see who had the tallest or best Maypole. Over time, this Old English festival incorporated dance performances, plays, and literature. People would crown a “May Queen” for the day’s festivities.
The strict Puritans of New England considered the celebrations of May Day to be licentious and pagan, so they forbade its observance, and the springtime holiday never became an important part of American culture as it was in many European countries.

Interestingly, from the late 19th century through the 1950s, the Maypole dance and festivities became a rite of spring at some U.S. colleges. Seen as a wholesome tradition, this celebration often included class plays, Scottish dancing, Morris dancing, a cappella concerts, and cultural dancing and music displays.

In the 1960s and 1970s, interest waned; the May Queen and her court became more of a popularity contest. Today, the Maypole dance is mainly celebrated in schools (from elementary though college) as a fun spring activity.

When my girls were young, we used to go to the Mayday celebration and May Pole dancing at the local Waldorf school. It was a lot of fun and the end result is very pretty.

We used to make tussie mussies for our mothers and other special ladies in the neighborhood, like the old lady who always had a piece of candy or a cookie for us. We would hang them on the doorknob, ring the bell, and run and hide. In later years we lived in the country and my youngest daughter would always bring me a bouquet of wild flowers. I remember that every year when I see the purple loosestrife blooming.

Linda,
I think MaryJane talked about tussie mussies in the magazine, but I am unsure which issue. We learned of them while we were homeschooling our kids.
I had heard of the Maypole in school.

We have had a week of almost 90 every day and no rain. It is bone dry here and our flowers need watering about every other day and some need it every day. Our plants had been so green and lush while the temps were moderate and nights cool. Now, they are getting stressed out and we hate to see them slow down. But that is what happens here and some of our plants for the summer will be just fine. It got hot in a big hurry!

Winnie,
We are just the opposite. It has been raining here consistently for a while now. Sunday is supposed to start a week of 80+ degree days. I am looking forward to it. Everything is green but soggy.

Ed will take pictures for sure - he is a better photographer. LOL!

I will be out of pocket until the 15th or 16th. We don't pay the high prices for Internet on the ship and only check emails if we are in ports and find free Internet. LOL!

We spent the weekend in Holmes County Amish area to celebrate our anniversary yesterday. It was very pretty there. Didn't actually see many Amish as it is very crowded with tourists. We did see some beautiful farms up that way. We hit a few antique places. I found a couple of pieces to add to a collection and an old book of United States history that I doubt any of is being taught these days. Did lots of walking which is good. We came home yesterday to spend time with my daughter for mother's day. Had a nice dinner and later our son in love got a fire going and we roasted hot dogs and peeps. Roasting peeps was a new experience and we enjoyed sitting around the fire getting all smokey smelling. Lol. All the kids had to get baths again from playing outside and being round the fire. They have two more weeks of school left. It was a fun time with them all.
When we got home there were a dozen roses from JT. He spoiled me for our 40th. Looking forward to many more years together.

Linda have a wonderful vacation and cruise!! It sounds like a wonderful retreat of Caribbean Aqua blue waters everywhere.

Denise, I always love a trip through Amish Country with their beautiful farms and usually some good bakeries where you can get special treats! Happy 40th Anniversary too!! That is a lovely milestone to celebrate and glad you got to have a fun out of town too. Our schools down here get out the last days of May which is just a few weeks away as well. The school year has gone by quickly, it seems.

Well, today has been busy.
Went to the elementary school this morning to help with the book fair, came home to JT and Peter reading books. Did some chores and fed P. lunch. His mom came to get him and JT had to leave so I went over to help dd change out the winter clothes to summer for the 3 girls, came home and started supper. I'm tired but the good kind you get from doing things.
