Since I'm not busy enough with all the farmwork, housework, and making butter (LOL!) I decided to try something new.

I have 3 taps in 2 different trees. I wanted to do this last year but the weather didn't cooperate and I didn't know what I was doing so I missed it. But, not this year! I was determined to make some maple syrup. I was so excited when the snow melted and the sap started flowing!!!!

The first boil was an EPIC fail!!!!

Yup, it caught fire!

Needless to say - I learned and adjusted a few things LOL! The second and third boils were MUCH better.

The one on the left is mine. The one on the right was purchased. It doesn't yield much (it takes 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of syrup) but it sure is delicious!!! It looks like the sap should be flowing for about a week now so hopefully I can make more than we eat :)

Oh my goodness Heather that is wonderful you can get and make your own maple sugar, I bet it is yummy. Good luck with your next batch. Is there a badge in there somewhere you can earn?

Heather, that’s so cool. We did that a few years ago! Minus the burning part! lol…we don’t really have the best trees to get a sweet tasting syrup though.

LOL! I'm not sure about a rockstar but I am having fun now that I've gotten the hang of it.

The sap was really flowing today! My pan wouldn't hold it all. If they do the same tomorrow I might get a full bottle of syrup :)

I don't think there's a badge for maple syrup so I'm going to use it for the kitchen renegade badge - you can pick any project you want for it.

That's so fun!! We do tap our trees too - but not until mid-end March can we start tapping. We are in the depths of snow and frozen temperatures until March still. I'm a little envious that you can already start tapping! Have fun :)

Joyce - we'll be done before you start LOL! I'd love to see some pictures of your system when you get going. Since this is my first time I just have a roaster pan on top of a turkey fryer that uses propane. I then switch to a smaller pot so it doesn't burn :) If I do more of this in the future I'll get more taps, some kind of wood stove, and a much bigger pan. Boiling all day for 1/2 a bottle of syrup is kind of crazy - but it sure is good!!!!

It's going to be a long time before I have enough to sell LOL! I only have 3 bottles for later and 1 that's being used now. I have no idea how many trees I'd have to tap to make enough for us for a year plus some to sell. Hopefully with this cool down that's coming the sap will flow some more. It was 60 yesterday and in the 50's today so it stopped. I tapped red maples which are the worst maples to tap (but all I have). They bud very early which is the end of good sap for syrup.

Thanks Debbie! Sometimes I'm a bit too enthusiastic and end up wondering "what on earth was I thinking" :)
