I thought it would be fun to start a Quilt Thread. You see the idea came to me when I saw Melody’s post this morning on the FGOTM. She was thanking our Wanda Sue for the Quilt Labels she sent. Then she shared some of what Wanda Sue had wrote in her card about working on her Mom’s Quilt.
My first thought was I would like to hear the story of Wanda Sue’s Mom’s Quilt and a photo.
So, this thread is to share old and new quilt stories with photos of finished quilts or quilts in progress.
Also if you have questions about quilting I know we may have a few more quilters in the HH, I know Debbie Klan is also a fabulous quilter, so maybe any quilters might be able to answer some questions we may have.
In my life I have made 9 or 10 quilts but I no longer make my own quilts as I just am not good with my sewing machine. (Long Story) But, I bought a real pretty quilt top from goodwill that is on my sewing chair waiting for backing and to hand quilt. My first quilt I ever made was a sampler quilt our instructor had us do it block by block which was easier to me, that was 1985. I will take a picture of it this week to share with you. The quilt top I am fixing to start I will hand quilt, as I love pure quilts, ones made completely by hand like In Little House on the Prairie days. The quilt top was pieced by machine but that’s alright the rest will bedone by hand to include my binding. I back all my quilts with muslin as they make them look old to me.
Anyway, so this is what I am looking for all things you wish to share about your quilts and quilting experiences. And don’t forget photos!

Big Hugs,
Debbie

One more thought. When I was making my Sampler quilt I was making mistakes and just getting so upset. I was a young 30 something and I wanted my quilts to be Perfect. My instructor said to me and the other ladies in the room, “Never Forget Quilters Only God Can make a Perfect Quilt.” And I never have forgotten that, I reminded myself that many times making my quilts. And none are perfect but I did my very best and I am very proud of each quilt I have made.

Hello Debbie, I love all things quilt related, but I am a beginner quilter. Lol, I just want to make that clear from the start. I am in no way an expert, I just love quilts. My paternal grandmother always made clothes for herself and the family. When she passed we found many quilt tops that she had pieced from all of the scraps she collected. All of the grandkids were able to choose one. Most were two inch squares, but one stood out to me. I was told it was a Joseph’s coat pattern. Of course that’s the one I chose, and quickly found a woman to add a backing and quilt it for me. I guess that is when my love for quilts began. It was so fun to find the bits in the quilt that came from all of the clothes I remember Grandmaw wearing, along with clothes she made for us as well. I will try to get some pictures together in the next few days. I’m looking forward to seeing what everyone shares.

A day hemmed in prayer is less likely to unravel.

I love, cherish and adore hand made quilts, I have two my mother has made, one my grandmother made, a couple I tried to make ( i'm not a good seamstress, and my bobbin and I don't get along very well) but I LOVE LOVE LOVE quilts! I really want to get a little antique cabine with glass doors to store them in so I can always admire them. Quilts are sooooo very special!!

Wanda Sue how wonderful to have a quilt from your grandmother made from her clothes and grandchildren. Truly a treasure!
April, I had to laugh when you said you do not make quilts due to the bobbin on your machine. That is exactly my problem that darn bobbin, it hates me! LOL! I must say though Kent did figure out my bobbin issue last year and fixed it for me. How wonderful you also have quilts from your mom and grandma such treasures for sure.
I collect quilts from other folks families and have for many years. Over the years I have bought from estate sales, yarn sales Goodwill and other Thrift stores all over the US. I cherish and treasure each one I have collected, some I have the stories for some I do not. But, I love them all!

Big Hugs,
Debbie

I love quilting and hand quilting. I made one for my husband for our 25th wedding anniversary. I have made them for my grandchildren and continuing to make one fir each. I have 3 to make for my children. I have always hand quilted mine so it takes a long time. I've never had a teacher. I've learned mostly from quilting books over the years. Quilting is very relaxing to me.

I admire you ladies being able to hand quilt. Sewing by hand does not relax me at all!!! I find it incredibly frustrating. Which is funny because I love to crochet and knit.

Sadly, no one in my family made quilts except my grandma's sister. I only know of 1 she made for my grandma. My grandma hated it because it was pink LOL! She did hang it though (rather than use it) and I believe my aunt has it now. A couple years ago I made a simple quilt for Nathan for Christmas:

Just a bunch of winter squares.

I also made some lap quilts out of my grandpas shirts for my family after he passed. I'll have to see if I can find some pictures of them.

I love that, Heather! I'm sure that Nathan did, too :) I'm guessing that his favorite color might be blue??

Heather I love your patchwork quilt! I am hoping to one day make a similar one from all of the fabric I received in Farmgirl swaps.

Thanks everyone!

Debbie K - He doesn't really have a favorite color - he usually prefers white. But a lot of the snow/winter fabric I had was blue. (And I'm not the biggest fan of white since I tend to be a bit messy and we have really hard water).

Beautiful quilt, Heather, so dang special!

I have a bag of my dad's shirts, he passed 3 years ago, can't even believe it, my intentions are to make a quilt out of them as well, perhaps throw size for me and my boys, and then I hope to make a few christmas ornaments from any scraps left over with his named embroidered on them for all the grands. Some days I just need a hug from my dad, can't hug him in heaven, so a little quilty blankey from his shirts may be the next best thing.

April, that’s a wonderful idea to make throws and ornaments from your dad’s shirts. Such special memories and you will always have him close. Such treasures you will make for your family.
Don’t forget to share your projects when you are finished. I know it will take some time, but you will enjoy each thing you make.

Big Hugs,
Debbie

Love the quilt, Heather!! :)

April, remember to keep any buttons from your dad’s shirts too. I made a quilt for John’s grandma from his grandpa’s shirts (after he passed). When gramma Shirley passed away, it was to come back to me. I gave it to my mother-in-law (her dad’s shirts) and told her I’ll keep it when she passes. I have Gramma Shirley’s shirts as well. I hope to make quilts for any great-great grand babies in our family. :) Quilts are a great way to hug a loved one.

I'll have to find the pictures - I made lap quilts from my grandpa's shirts after he passed for all us grandkids and all the kids (my parents and aunts and uncles).

Karen - Nathan's grandma was "grandma Shirley" too!

How wonderful for you Karen, such great memories.
Looking forward to more photos.
I just ordered the muslin, batting and quilting thread to start my quilt top. Looking forward to it.

Here are the lap quilts I made from my grandpas shirts and hankies for everyone. It appears that I didn't take pictures of them finished so these are just the tops.
