I am usually the "odd woman out" in most instances, which is fine by me. I do what makes me happy and follow my bliss to make things happen. We've recently moved to Clayton, GA and LOVE it up here in the mountains--it is so refreshing and good for my soul here. Anyway, I am a pediatric lpn (blessed to work from home), I also love natural healing, herbs, gardening, belly dance, and glass art. I do drill engraving and am getting pretty good these days, but still have a LONG way to go. I have 2 dogs (blue heeler and a Pharaoh hound) and a Columbian boa (my retired dance partner)--DH has a cool Bombay cat that I like. I am currently working on my degree in entrepreneurship to eventually open up my own business of spiritual healing and art creations. What little fiction I do read is generally horror, such as HP Lovecraft, Edgar Allen Poe, and Grimm's tales (the originals) and stuff along those lines. It's been ages since I've read a Dean Koontz book, but I do enjoy his stuff. I am a practicing Kemetic Demonolatress and Hoodoo.

Rachel, thanks for introducing yourself. I bet, like me, you are the first to volunteer to get things started at any gathering. I also am from Georgia, Waynesboro to be exact. Our little town is closer to Augusta, half way up the Savannah River. I've lived here for 33 1/2 years because I had a blind date to a University of Georgia football game.

I teach high school English and enjoy my job very much. I enjoy reading, many crafts involving yarn or thread and needles of any kind. But, I hate getting shots. That was meant to be a joke. Sorry, long day. I am a member of a Bible study group, and though this group has been meeting for many years, they have accepted me as a newcomer. I am thrilled to have the opportunity to be part of a group of women more mature than I am in chronological and spiritual years.

My husband and I have one wonderful daughter, who has recently moved to Savannah. Our nest is empty, but still very active with friends and family. We have five "dumpster" dogs which roam our woodsy acres and entertain us with their unique personalities.

OK. Now the ice is doubly broken, Rachel and I are looking forward to hearing from the rest of our "sisters"

Blessings,

Carol

I used to live in Pembroke, about 40 miles out of Savannah. I can't stand driving downtown!

Wonderful to get to know you two. Hope the rest will chime in here soon.... Here Chick, Chick, Chick!!!!

Well, Im a mother of two, 24 yr DD and 20 yr DS, both are married to wonderful people. I own and run a cattle ranch, The Poor House Ranch, in Talladega, central Alabama. I have horses, a pony and a donkey, chickens, dogs and cats. I have called Talladega my home since I was born. Days are long and work is tough but I would not want it any other way. This is what my God has put in front of me and I so enjoy the land and the livestock. I ride horses and enjoy camping with my friends in one of my vintage Scotty campers. I hunt and fish and hike and kayak and canoe. All of this sounds wonderful however I don't get much time to get away so mostly I just dream of doing all my favorite hobbies. I carve out time to sew and read. Family is everything to me. I have two sisters, one older and one younger. Both have health issues so I try to help them when they need it.
I am having such fun with all you Farmgirls and learning new things thru MaryJanesFarm (MJF). I have begun to can/preserve more and this year I will be planting a small?? garden. I also did a seed swap and now have the most amazing assortment of flowers to plant. I hope my thumb is not totally black.

Hugs and prayers, Daizy

This is such a great way to meet so many wonderful ladies. I love getting to know each of you and hope someday we can all meet in person.
Here goes: I have a great husband, three grown daughters and one step-son, 11 grand-children (only one girl) and one great-grand-daughter. Obviously I'm no spring chicken ;) and these days I am a home-body. We have lived here in CT for 10 years and are looking for a small farm-stead in NC and hoping to relocate before winter. I was a stay at home mom for most of my life, working briefly here and there and taking college courses at night (it took 13 years for me to get my Associates Degree). I was raised mostly by my grandmother so I learned very early how to do many needle-crafts especially knitting, crochet and sewing; and how to make a dollar stretch a very long way. I love to sew, and especially enjoy making quilts. We live in a very small town and I have turned our backyard into a mini-farm with chickens and an expanding vegetable garden (each year I add a couple of 4'x10' raised beds. This year my corn patch will be about 400sf.) Lots of canning and preserving which I absolutely love doing.
I "retired" about 3 years ago and love it. It's funny, I spent most of my life trying to get somewhere, as in some sort of career, and I am right back where I began as a full time housewife and loving every minute. This is who I am, an old-fashioned wife, mother and grand-ma.
Rachel, like you, I have always been the odd woman out and I am fine with it. I have made and followed my own path and have visited many avenues, and this has been my bliss as well.
Hope this wasn't too syrupy.....

Excited to be part of a Hen House finally! I have been a MJ Farmgirl for a number of years, but never found a local Chapter to join, so wonderful to have this virtual house and sisters to talk with. First of all a big "Thank You" to Daizy for getting this off the ground!
I currently live in NC, but will be relocating to TN at the end of this year, to Knoxville. I am married with 2 sons--the oldest is married to a wonderful girl and they both attend university locally. My youngest son is a high school senior, due to go to Air Force training this summer. We are downsizing for the move, but in the past we had a flock of chickens (currently a rooster and hen),goats, cats and dogs.

I love all kinds of needlework, gardening and reading. Working on going "Green" at the moment, making homemade cleaning products and changing over to unprocessed, organic food. Will have a small garden this summer and want to learn to can and make jam.

Found this great poem that I have added to my binder and thought I would share it here.

Not the Hen House

The yackety-yak and the laughter
Is not the clucking of hens,
But the turning of keys in locks
The withdrawal of bolts
Experience freed,
The coming together of souls.

The yeast is fermenting now
Leavening our tomorrows,
And safe in the lves of women
The wine will be slowly maturing.

Bye for now

I'm with you, Irene and Kathleen and Daizy and Rachel. This is so much fun! Getting to know women from all over the country with similar interest is magical. Thanks, Irene, for sharing the poem.

Yay!! Howdy girls! I'm so excited to get to know you all. Joan, I'm like you I don't have a chapter close by so this is great. I started a chapter but no requests to join. Oh well. I'm a homeschooling mom of four and have been married to my DH for 10 years. I love everything homesteading. I currently use the garden at my parents house and we share the work and the harvest. Our soil at our house is clay so it's hard to grow anything. Since we share I go over there to help. We added some raised beds this year and are getting some more tires to recycle into beds. I love to read, sew, camp, be outdoors, write letters, and upcycle clothes. I've been creating a lot. I'm also addicted to Pinterest. I confess! Hee hee. We have no animals at the moment but are thinking about getting some chickens and my DD wants a rabbit. I also own a Mary Kay business. I love it! It's a lot of fun. I love being a part of MJF and getting to know the other sisters. I'm an only girl of two kids so it's like having sisters to talk to and get to know.

Good evening Ladies,
Well I have only been a member of MJF for about a year. I have lived in the city most of my adult life and yet have always wanted a farm of my own, ever since one foster home I lived on was a large farm. I have been married to a wonderful man for 5 years now and he like me is looking forward to leaving Florida and having our own farm. We have talked about it for about 2 years now and just this year have decided on West Virginia. Currently we use our neighbors back yard as our garden and last year was our first time. Some crops came in but we learned a lot about the soil and weather. So far this year we have mostly everything coming up and I am looking forward to harvest season. I still have one tomato plant from last year that refuses to give up just yet. It still is producing tomatoes. I am currently in college working in the end with a Masters in Education. I have 4 years left and then we will be on our way. I have two cats and one dog and no other animals, so when we leave here and move to West Virginia, we are hoping to have chickens, goats, and if I know my husband, cows, sheep, and pigs will be added to that list.
I will be starting my own herbal business this summer as I have been working on my certification to become a Master Herbalist.
I have really enjoyed being a part of this and look at each of you as an extended family since I have none.
Becky

May the stars carry your sadness away. May the flowers fill your heart with beauty, and may hope forever wipe away your tears.

Hi ladies!
I am not very good at expressing myself or writing, but here goes. I am from Long Island, New York. Grew up in Bucks County, PA. Got married young and had two sons. I was on my way with my dreams of being self sufficient. I even washed my boys diapers by hand and hung them outside. They were the brightest I have ever seen. Anyway that marriage did not work out. I met a city boy and married him in my 30's. My goodness . . . Well needless to say I don't think any of those farmgirl dreams will come true. I am now 54, we had a daughter who is now 12. I really like to cook, sew, garden, read and dream farmgirl!
I am going to really love getting to know all of you girls and I have to agree you'll all feel like my extended family.
Not sure if I babbled, but more later on.

Thanks Daizy, this is a great thing you put together.
God Bless us all,

Susan Farmgirl Sister #2555

Yea, finally I am in. And I do believe I figured it out on my own. JUST WENT TO PROFILE and was asked to verify my new password. Is this step four not mentioned in the instructions or is it my 60 year old computer skills. What a hoot and several days of attempts! I vote it is my poor computer skills.

Well, I am so happy to meet you guys. I retired two years ago and am raising my 9 year old grandson . We love camping. My husband and Darian stop by my 25 year old special needs son Adrian's apartment to get him and go camping as much as possible. My camping address is Alpine, AL. We presently live in an idealic urban city Homewood, but are shopping for a very small farm. We just missed out on a 5 acre horse farm just down the road from our rv lot. I love to paint (acrylics, watercolors) and have my art all over the house. My other hobbies are sewing, decorating, dog grooming (my new second career), and glamping. I hope to meet lmany of you in my new micro- lite twist decorated in hello-kitty theme. It is named tout petit and weighs only 300 pounds. I have enjoyed glamping it up along with my new old fifth wheel that sits permanently in Alpine and has been named Mr. Grande Campeur. My grandson and I also take karate together. Life is just one adventure and one dream after another!

First, I am so happy to

Happy glamping!!!

Apologies all. My typing is on nook with fat fingers and my review is with thick glasses and stigmatism. I am getting better but my typing is just awful. Anyway, I love to hear about all your animals, your projects, your hopes and dreams . What fun this will be.

Happy glamping!!!

It was fun to read about all you farmgirls! Here's some info on me...

I live in Canada - a year ago we moved (quite literally) from one coast to the other...we are now on the West Coast. On the East Coast we had 130 acres...and a beautiful little over 100 year old farmhouse...I do miss it very much. We moved to the West Coast to be closer to our family, and I'm quite thankful that we have our 2 acres. Currently we have 2 llamas - but soon hope to have our chickens/ducks/turkeys again, as well as some pigs. I hope to get some goats and other animals that happen to come our way again :)

I'm a homeschooling mother of three children - 7, 5 and 3. I'm also a piano teacher, which I do just a little - one day a week. I enjoy being a wife, mother, baking, scrapbooking, gardening, our animals, preserving, rug hooking, cross stitching, practicing/playing piano...and absolutely love reading. It's my "get-away".

Hi, Ladies!!

(Hi, Joyce! I actually sent you a letter a couple of days ago!! Yay!) I am so excited to be a part of this virtual henhouse and to get to know you gals. A little about me... I joined MJF in 2012 but let my membership lapse. I have now renewed and am so glad I did. I've really missed being more active here. I even went so far as to start my own local chapter since I've been unable to find an active group near me. I may have two people interested in joining me, so that's exciting!

I'm in a small town outside of Charlotte, NC, where we have turkeys, ducks, chickens, a couple guineas, 3 goats, a horse and a donkey. We also have a dog (our oldest passed a week ago - one of the saddest days of my life), 4 cats and a praying mantis. I hope to breed the goats soon and begin milking this spring. I also want to spend more energy on gardening next year... I'm hoping my elderberry bush thrives and gives me a small harvest of berries next year. I'd be so grateful!! Just dying to make medicinals with the berries. I hope to put in muscadine grapes beginning of April, and any bit of successful vegetable gardening would be thrilling!!

I enjoy quilting and try to do it on Fridays with a group of ladies at our county extension office. I also crochet but haven't done much with it recently - I made a hot pad a couple weeks ago. I would like to learn to knit, but I'm in no hurry. It will happen when it happens. I enjoy papercrafting/scrapbooking but just don't have a lot of space or time to devote to it right now.

So, what will we do in this virtual henhouse?? Looking forward to hanging out with you girls!

Kris B.

Hello all!
I am new to the group, I just got my certificate yesterday!!!!
Let's see, I'm 41 (will turn 42 on the 1st of December), married for 10 years to my wonderful husband Larry, and we have a 7 year old son named Lee.
I do not own a farm, but I am a farm girl at heart. I plan on starting a garden next summer and hope to get enough produce so that I can start canning. I wish I did live on a farm.
I live in Gallup, NM which is a small town in the NW part of New Mexico and we are about 20 miles from the Arizona border.
I work full-time for the City of Gallup as the Fiscal Specialist for the Utilities Division. I over see the budget activity for 5 departments along with all of our Capital Projects and I also over see the funding for our State and Federal Projects.
I am also going to school online to get my Bachelor's in Accounting. I do have my Associate's already. My husband is a Car Salesman/Ad Manager for Amigo Toyota. My son is in the 2nd grade at the local Charter School. This is a new school here in our town. It opened when my son started Kindergarten, so he has been going ever since. He does have ADHD so this school really works with him on this.
I would LOVE to start natural healing with herbs, but I am totally lost and it seems like a big thing to start and I am apprehensive. This is one of the reasons I joined here so that I can get advice and guidance along with advice and guidance on gardening, canning, etc.
I am your typical girl next door. I am pretty simple and I don't need a lot to make me happy. I am also honest so if you would like to know anything else, please don't be afraid to ask.
I can't wait to meet you all!!!

Hello Jackie! There are so many herbs it can be overwhelming. I started out thinking I could learn everything about all of them --HAHA. Then it dawned on me to start with what is most abundant in my yard, after all learning about an herb found in India won't help me much on the home front. I took pictures of the weeds in the yard and made an album on my computer, then I would pick one to study at a time and I started with plantain since it was everywhere, when I felt I had learned enough about it to use it effectively I would add the next most common weed that I could find and so on. Since we moved, I am having to start over because I have found so many in the mountains that were not in south GA!!! It is so fun!! I do get rather annoyed because it takes me a while to remember stuff though. Welcome to the henhouse!
