My recent project has been putting a flower garden in the front yard. When we moved in to this house, it looked like someone had a flower bed there before. It took almost 8 big bags of dirt to fill the area in!! I got some of that black border stuff and a little white picket fence to go around it--I liked the natural colored one better but thought the white would look better with the house. Anyway, after alot of rainy days and not being able to work on it due to health issues--I FINALLY got it done (mostly) today. I am so proud of myself!! I started a bunch of plants from seeds and they were looking so fabulous until DH's cat decided that the seedlings would make a great bed. I just tossed them around in the flower bed, hopefully they'll perk up. I bought some pretty flowers from Wal-Mart and got some off the 50% racks that just need some TLC. Oddly enough I usually do pretty good with those flowers, getting them to come back from the brink of death. On one of our hikes up the mountain, we picked up quite a few chunks of quartz and I've add them to the bed as well. I got a bag full of seeds from my MIL and scattered them around the bed also. Fingers crossed that they all come up and it looks as good for real as it does in my head!! I'll get some pictures and share them after the sun moves a little more. |

Rachel, I'm proud of you for getting your flower bed started. Your vivid word pictures helped me imagine the scene. Love the idea of using quartz and the fence. Try to post a picture when you have a chance. As for me, I'm way, way behind, but there is still hope. School finishes up next week and my daughter will be all situated in her new apartment. In other words, I'll have no more excuses. Happy Days! |
Blessings,

Here are a couple of pictures. I want to get more stones to go around the flowers and thanks to Autumn (DH's cat)will have to get bigger ones, she rearranged the smaller stones that I had. I put a piece of the fencing up on one of the posts for the porch to give my periwinkle something to climb on. I've got some marigolds, salvia, dahlia (hasn't come up yet), mini roses, and some that I can't remember what they're called (the ones that look like flames). The miniature roses I got off of the sick rack after Mother's Day and the lady at wal-mart gave me the tiniest one for free (it looked rough). They are both looking better and I even have a few blooms now! Now I just need to figure out how to keep Autumn (or whatever else may be getting in my flowers) out!

My flowers now!!
Mini rose bush that was about gone when I got it, looking good now!
A spot where not much is growing so I put a little bird house there (the plate was too small for the birds to stand on) for the fairies and will add some more to build a village I suppose.

It's funny because at our old house I could grow herbs like nobody's business but never flowers. Here, the flowers are doing awesome and the herbs not so much. I am still enjoying them all though! |

I moved my herbs off of the porch the other day and have found what I think May be the reason they are doing so poorly here. The spot where I moved them is in front of my office window so I can actually see them now:) . Anyway, I happened to look up one day and saw Autumn ( DHs cat) getting in one of the pots and jumping from pot to pot playing with the stalks AND she decided to curl up and nap in the biggest pot where I have (had) fennel and parsley. That darn cat!!! I was only able to get one harvest all year! I guess I'll have to figure out something else for next years herb garden :) |
