Darlene, your pictures are works of art!
Bonnie, I'm sorry about your back pain. I'm glad that you are happy doing your handwork...I bet you do some beautiful things! I have my husband's great grandmother's darning ..."thing"....the real name escapes me right now! haha The wooden tool that you use to darn socks. I guess that's what came to my mind when you said you enjoy mending. I do not enjoy mending jeans. They are so hard to maneuver underneath the sewing machine. My husband made a comment years ago about my mending job. I'm not sure what it was..something about the patch underneath being square. So, the next hole that I patched in his work jeans I cut into a heart shape and put a cute piece of fabric underneath that had bunnies on it! Not another piece of denim. It turned out really cute, if you ask me! haha He never complained again....ahahaha

I agree with you Debbie about patching jeans.
I have patched my husbands, but mostly my sons. He is such a big tall man, his jeans go on forever, or so it seems. When he was given several pair that had some stretch...well that was a nightmare! He finally has enough pairs of work jeans to last a week, plus his starched dress jeans. So he has not asked me to patch any recently. I remember darning socks as a young wife. I used a light bulb. Now if a hole should open up...wow I get a new rag or they go to the barn for my son's use.She
When Bay was a first grader she had a favorite pair of jeans. When she grew taller the jeans became capris, but she continued to grow taller. So I made a cuff, about five inches wide, with little round fabric knot buttons. I used several tiny prints and I thought they were pretty cute. Next she wore holes in the butt by the pockets, so I found my fabric scraps, some wonder under and light weight denim, and soon she had hearts on her hiney. Then in fifth grade she came to me and said the zipper had broken in her most favorite pair of jeans! Well, I told her that perhaps she should give up on them. But when I looked at her very sad face, I knew that was not the answer...So I put one very long shoe lace to work. It laced the jeans up and she was happy. Thankfully she gave them up before summer...She had finally gained a few ounces, and began to get a tiny bit of hips so she had to give up her favorite pair of jeans. And I told her I would save them, because someday she might have a skinny little girl, who would get a kick out of her mom's much loved jeans!

I have never patched anything, I love your story Debbie.

Well you saved money with her liking those jeans so much. That was a good pair of jeans, and she was happy to keep the

Nice!

Debbie,, I guess you took care of him,,,lol. I have a Viking sewing machine and mending jeans is very doable. Not as fun as other mending but having a husband and boys I have mended my share. There is a group in Minnesota that takes their machines and go to nursing homes to mend for free. What a nice gesture.

Bonnie - so sorry to hear about your back pain. I hope you get some relief very soon.

Darlene - Glad to hear you are home for a while. Hopefully surgery will get scheduled soon and you can get back on your feet. I know several people with recent knee surgeries and they were both up and walking with no pain very quickly. I pray you have a quick recovery, too.

It is amazing how quickly people recover these days! My brother in law had a massive stroke at 6pm last Thursday. My sister immediately knew what was wrong due to the jibberish coming from his mouth. They live in Dallas, the ambulance drivers took him to big Baylor...a level 1 trauma hospital. A cat scan showed he had two large clots blocking the right side of his brain. The doctor went in and was able to remove 60% of the clot. He sounded very normal Saturday morning and was looking forward to going home that afternoon! Crazy!!!

Medicine has come a long way. Many surgeries that used to require a two week hospital stay are now done outpatient. My mother was in the hospital two weeks when I was born; my daughter was home the next day after my granddaughter was born.

I talked to my sister last night. Jim did come home Saturday afternoon. The doctor was able to remove the clotted blood, not with surgery...Like I was thinking, but by going through his artery.
Thank God.
She said that now she is afraid to be too far from a trauma, level 1 hospital. They travel a lot, but always in the states. Climbing mountains in Utah may not be a return visit for them. She said that she never dreamed that when they make future vacation plans...the number 1 item on the list will be availability of the life saving health care he got at big Baylor.
He takes a blood thinners and they were told that even with the medication...He could stroke again...it seems that after one, the possibility of another is quite high!

My sister married him 2 and 1/2 years ago. He takes zeralto a blood thinner for a heart issue. But he was scheduled for a biopsy last Friday...so he had not had the thinner in a week. To me that is scary that a person could develop two large c lots in less than a week. So the heart doctors told him he could only be off the thinner for two days in the future. They also said to be very attentive to any changes in the way he feels, because he could stroke out again. He rides his bike daily and loves to hike when they travel. He seems to be a very nice man.

Glad your BIL could get proper help quickly! Hopefully his health is going to stabilize better and doctors can also do any investigative tests that are needed. It is always tricky when you need to be on a bloodthinner.

MaryEllen -- Thank you for the cute little snowman. What a cute idea and you did a great job. It makes a wonderful winter decoration and has the added attraction of being edible. So nice of you to make it for me.
