Debbie, I'm so happy to hear you say such sweet things about your third grade teacher. I taught third grade my very first year! Many of those kids were eventually my Facebook friends. They asked me! They are getting older too, about 58-59 years old. I have said many times, that third grade class taught me how to teach school, while I taught them...all but one little boy, how to write in cursive.sweet memories.

This morning canning dried scarlet runner beans. They're such a pretty bean. It's cool in my Yellow Rose Cottage and the birds are singing. Perfect morning for canning. Annie wanders through from time to time for a ice cube.

While the beans are heating up I came into the house to wash a few dishes and play on my laptop. It's time now to go check on the beans.

Thank you Debbie! Two weeks ago my son and his family met one of my former first graders and his wife for dinner. I got a text message asking if I remember a certain little girl. She and her husband were there too. .Well of course I do! Then he told me how she loved me, I was her favorite teacher, etc. A little later he texted me that the owner of the place was also one of my first graders. Now this has happened quite a few times in the past ten years. I am always humbled. I am also so happy that my son has heard some of the memories of some of my former students, in this case first graders. The first class is about 55 years young! I'm getting old!

I wish I lived near to some Amish because they always have great produce and dairy products for sale. Sara, I am glad you were having great weather to be out canning at the Yellow Rose Cottage. Yesterday and today were rain free but quite hot and humid. I miss those open window days and a quilt on the bed!

Sara, we just had the best supper! When I set out to feed my hens, I had to wait! I could not get to the feed because hubby was getting his horse feed. So I went to pull some seeds in my peas. I thought I had seen one but it was a green bean plant, loaded with a nice big handful of green beans. I also found two small yellow squash, one nice red tomato...our first and a nice cuke! I went inside and washed it all. I had bought some little new potatoes at the store, and my neighbor had given me some little purple onions. The cuke and tomato were our salad and the other veggies were sauteed in some butter, and some pepper.
Of course hubby required meat so I made steak fingers for him.
But the star of the show was the veggies from my very own little garden. God is good. I sure do love his surprises!I
Yummy supper!

Do you buy your berries from a farm that picks them for you? Wow! Blueberries are good for you. I buy fresh ones at the grocery but mostly I buy frozen ones. Smoothies!

Yes we do Marilyn. We used to pick ourselves but I can't deal with the heat and sun to much anymore so it is quicker and easier to have them do it for a little more. Their prices are reasonable though and I enjoy having them fresh and frozen. They are so good. We may pick up some peaches and other things too. Depends on what I find.

Sherry your cherry jelly sounds so good.

I have red cabbage for sauerkraut and Swiss chard ribs fermenting on kitchen counter. Fermented 3 cucumbers last week and they are now in the fridge. The pickles are so good and I will make them again.

Recipe for fermented pickles.

Wash and slice 3 cucumbers in quarters.
1 tsp salt
Garlic; black pepper corns; red pepper flakes (optional)
dill or other fresh herb - I used rosemary
Non-chlorine water to cover
Cover with tight lid -
I use glass fermenting weight and fermenting lid
Keep cucumbers covered with water
Keep out of direct sunlight -
I wrap jars with a cloth so I can keep on counter
Ready in 3 days - keep in fridge
Enjoy

The pickles taste like the ones I use to get in a deli in Dallas in the 1960s.

So much is going on in our HenHouse kitchens these days!! Tis the season to be enjoying and putting up those summer garden harvests that we all love this time of year. It is funny because in Florida this time of year, everything is over in my local area. It is way too hot and humid for much except some hardy peppers, Okra, and some eggplants. But even those are not putting out much. It is too humid and all sorts of plant pests and problems overcome everything. Blueberries are done and oranges are just a hard little green ball. Our fall gardens will go in about mid-September and hearty greens, some tomatoes and things like broccoli and brussle sprouts will get going for late fall and into winter harvest.

Connie, how lucky you are to be so near an Amish Farm that runs an active farm stand, complete with pies, into the late Fall!! I would be over there every week getting fresh produce, bread, and maybe a pie on occasion!! My girlfriend and I found this wonderful Mennonite Community in Montezuma, Georgia where they have a great little restaurant, Yoders, that serves the best home cooked food and wonderful pies and rolls made fresh there. Beside the restaurant is the Mennonite Bakery where they sell breads, rolls, pies, cakes all made on site. Their cinnamon rolls were out of this world! We found the place one year when I was visiting her because we both have July birthdays. I found this place , about 45 minutes from her house and we had so much fun we went back about a year later. I was the real deal !!

Sara thanks for the pickle recipe. I used to slice cukes into rounds, cut up onion, peel and smash garlic cloves, etc and layer it into a jar with one fat little jalapeno pepper. Salt, black pepper corns, then add heated white vinegar to cover. I just put them in the fridge. They did not last long! My son recently asked me to make that again. They are best, they say after three or four days.

Marilyn, I'll have to give your pickle recipe a try.

Today on Food Network "The Kitchen" they made grilled cheese sandwiches in the pop-up toaster with reusable toaster bags. I like grilled cheese but don't like having to wash a skillet for one sandwich so I looked up the bags on Amazon. I was surprised at how many they offered. Guess the bags have been around for awhile. I ordered a pkg of 10 so I have plenty to share with all my sisters.

The bags I ordered gave suggestions for using to heat chicken sticks, leftover fries, and buttered toast. When I get mine I will let you know how I like it. They are hand washable and dishwasher safe.

Cornish hens were on sale last week so Bobbie is coming over for lunch. This will be the 2nd or 3rd time I have ever cooked Cornish hens so I hope they turn out okay. Will season with lemons and rosemary.

Years ago, when my son was a little boy, my sister shared with me a recipe that a co worker, at Presbyterian Hospital, had shared with her. So I fixed three little hens for my family, several times during those years. If I remember, correctly, it was served over long brain and wild rice. You made a delicious sauce to serve with it from the pan drippings.
