Harvested three buds off my caper bush. First harvest. Planted the caper bush this April so it's a quick growing plant. Not enough buds to mess with pickling so I put them in the fermenting bok choy,

Hint: Nasturtium buds can be substituted for caper buds.

Weeded four small beds along sidewalk to front porch. Had to come in because humidity is so bad. Not quite 8a.m. but yard work is over until another morning. May water before going to bed.

It's like that in the summer Sara. Send everything has to be done in the morning or the evening.

Checked on transplanted herbs in the raised beds. All are doing really good and growing. Some are blooming. This year I have let all my herbs bloom before harvesting (which is a no-no) so the few butterflies and bees have food.

Today I ordered seeds for my raised beds fall garden. Ruby Red Swiss Chard - Colored Carrots - Beets - all organic - and the beets & Swiss Chard are heirlooms.

Herbs transplanted to raised beds are all doing well. Early I weeded the beds and it's so easy when I don't have to bend over. Yes, weeds can find there way to raised beds on two high cinder blocks. So far so good squirrels don't know they're there.

Our new Butterfly friendly plants that we put out this year are now doing well and we are seeing lots of beautiful butterflies every day. This has been a new source of backyard fun for us along with the birds.

I took advantage of the breeze and watered my raised bed. I usually wait till about 8pm. Unreal how cool this breeze is!! Those crazy mums are so big they are splitting! I had them in pots last year and I put them in the ground in November, Only 4 of 7 came back. I love looking out my laundry room window on hot days and I can see my flower bed. This is the only place I have flowers except for blooming bushes and 2 pots by my front door.

Connie your flower bed is beautiful. Love the mix of colors.

Worked in raised beds this morning. It's really not work since I don't have to bend - it's fun. Cut back the herbs showing stress from the heat and use of city water. Hope that will help to revive them. Drying herbs in dehydrator.

I have the seeds for fall garden - colored carrots, ruby red Swiss chard, and beets. Just a month away from planting fall garden in two of raised beds. I want to order milkweed seeds and also yellow tulip bulbs for spring showing. For the last several years I have planted the tulip bulbs in a large enamelware pot in Oct - winter over on southside of house - and put in front yard when they start to grow. Tulips in my zone are treated as annuals.

Botanical Interests on their web-site has articles on frost tolerance of vegetables and cover crops. A lot of good info.

Connie the few seeds I order are from Botanical Interests. Occasionally I may order a rare seed from another nursery. Mountain Valley Growers for life plants. Park Seeds or Wayside Nursery for yellow tulip bulbs to plant in the fall in container for spring bulb. I usually plant 24 bulbs so it's quite a showing.

I posted first on the Garden Gate on MJF so I just copied it for here. So excited about having a fall garden for the first time I just had to keep talking about it.

This morning I'm getting ready to sow my fall garden in the morning. First I marked off the two raised beds with the help of a permeant marker and yardstick. When I sow the seeds tomorrow I will know exactly where to put them. Beets every 4" - Carrots every 1" - Swiss Chard every 8" which yields 23 beet plants - Carrots 92 plants - Swiss Chart 6 plants.

Second I have counted out the seeds for carrots, Swiss chard, and beets into little bowls. The package for beets says to soak them up to 24 hours before sowing so I have them soaking. My Square Foot Gardening book says to soak the carrots and Swiss Chard 30 minutes to help jump start them. They are all ready to add water to in the morning.

I enjoy the planning and getting ready as much as I do tending the plants and watching them grow.

I have a few beets up and more seed planted. I also have some winter squash plants to transplant into the new raised bed early next week. I need to purchase some potting soil or something for the top layer, before I love the baby plants. I also planted carrots and radishes in the first section.A fall garden in Texas does better in some ways than a spring garden.
