That is so neat, Connie! I call my son, but sometimes he can't come as soon as I need him. Luckily I can fix many problems myself just by trying different things. LOL!

Connie,
That is so sweet of your nephew. Love that bucket list.
I didn't get my pumpkins yet with all that has transpired here. Not sure when I will.
Going tomorrow to get my hair trimmed. I think I am going to go a bit shorter this time so I can go longer between cuts.

I wasn't able to get into the salon yesterday so I will go on Saturday morning.
Was able to get my bread baking and brownie making done today.
T is here with us from today until Saturday. She loves to come over to her Mimi and Papa's house.
We took the boys out this morning and when we got back decided to have her come along home with us.
First time we have taken C out since he was diagnosed, but all was well. We've had him here at the house but don't normally venture out with him. He does pretty much all of his own shots and care now. So it is much easier.

I don't decorate for Halloween but for fall. Saying that I now have a large real life spider & it's web on my front porch near the mail box. It's body is approximately 1" with leg span of 2". I say approximately because I'm not about to get close enough to measure it. I'll leave it be as long as he doesn't get too frisky.

This morning I saw where it is now spinning it's web down to the back of the metal bench. I really don't mind it being there because it's catching all kinds of flying insects in it's web. Must be a mama spider because I think there's a egg sack. I have always called those kind of spiders garden spiders - one of the young men who delivers my groceries thought it was a banana spider.

Sara, those spiders are fun to watch. They are the ones I took to school to teach the kids about spiders each morning one of two kids would bring in a grasshopper or a couple of crickets. They quickly learned to toss the food up into the web, and with mamma quickly wrap her food up to save for later and repair her net. Fascinating to watch.
One summer the grand kids had one over a window downstairs. I showed them how to feed it. Then they taught their parents, who said the web needed to be gone.
No!No!No!
I have also taken a square of cardboard or thin masonite, painted it black, let it dry, then carefully put it in behind the web. Then you bring the black surface toward you to capture the web. Very impressive to first graders. I guess I'm still six at heart, because something in me wanted to stand an egg on its end at the equinox.

Yesterday my sweet husband Ed was over at the new neighbor's house, mowing the front lawn and also around the aerobic septic sprinkler heads in the back 2 acres so he can brush hog the rest. He said on Wednesday that he wanted to completely mow their property before her husband comes home in another week (I think), since he's never seen his new house and Ed doesn't want him to have to mow immediately when he gets home. Her husband is coming home from a year in Kuwait in the reserves; he has been back at his Texas base for about 2 weeks, and will be home soon. Now, since it has been and is raining, he can't brush hog yet, but he will as soon as he can. Ed also wants to put 2 red/white/blue buntings we have on the fence across from their house to welcome him home. Isn't he thoughtful? I love him so much!

Now that we have a new leak in the hallway ceiling - again - he will have that to fix, too. Oh, I love my old house. Ed keeps looking at new house plans. I love some of them, but also love my old house. Sometimes I think it would be nice, though, living in a new house.

Linda,
That is so thoughtful of Ed. I'm sure he will appreciate having more time to spend with his family.

I understand how you feel about old houses. I love them too but I sure wouldn't mind living in a house where everything was finished and fixed to start with. I know where ever we live there will always be maintenance but I told JT the next house we buy I don't want to have to do any remodeling to it. I want it move in ready and all rooms finished.

Linda, if your old home is paid for...and you are paying for patch jobs along the way... Is that not cheaper than a new house payment???

If I owned an old farmhouse, I would hate to give it up for a new one. Three years ago, when we were looking to downsize, all of the newer homes were way smaller, more crowded together and not as quality made as the house we are in. So, in the end, we decided to enjoy our paid for house, fix up the issues outside that needed attention, and carry on. I am glad we did. Mind you this house is a standard cinder block house from 1961 that is well made but has no charm. We have made many changes to improve it since we moved here in Sept. 1984, and the newer places did not offer us anything more interesting. Unless you can afford a custom built home, what you get on the market around here that is new and ready to move in, is a cookie cutter version of whatever else is in the area. Many of those new subdivisions around here are also gated and require monthly fees, especially if they have anything like a clubhouse and pool. It gets uber expensive! Also , there are regulations about what color you can paint your house too. This situation may not be so prevalent in other states and it is not prevalent in old neighborhoods like mine. But the smaller, older residents in Florida seem to want this sort of thing and those new subdivisions are everywhere. While it is a matter of what appeals to you and suits your needs, your older paid for house, with the few upgrades may be the cheapest and most desirable location after all is said and done.

Winnie you are so right! Last Christmas eve when we went to look at Christmas lights, we found a highly decorated new area of new homes. As we drove around I realized that basically every home was a big two car garage, with a very tiny stoop...not a porch! I'm sure the rooms were small inside because the whole house was not that big. For a young couple perhaps a starter home. But if you had big kids, forget it, or if you have big furniture forget it. When we are older we need room to walk around.
I remember a lady I once commuted to work with. They bought a home when their one child was young. Then As she became a teen they made the garage into a game room. And added new spaces for all three vehicles. When the daughter married, she had lived at home for college, they sold the big house and purchased a duplex...Then they moved in with almost all of the big furniture from the big house. Of course some of the furniture was family heirlooms...But honestly I felt claustrophobic when I visited one day. I was only about 40 and skinny...But I could barely get around.
Even if your repairs/maintenance on an older home run you $10,000 per year..that is way cheaper than the payment on a new home.
Another thing to consider...and I know this lady too. They lived out of town about three miles, but she was not happy. So they sold out moved to town bought an existing home with payments. She was retired, but he continued to work. He was 74 when he fell ill and died. Without his income she could no longer afford the nice home in town. So she sold it and now lives with her daughter and son in law...back out near where She used to live She would like a small home of her own, but cannot afford one in this college town.

Speaking of older houses and repairs - Ed discovered this morning that the concrete cover on the septic tank (and we have no idea how old this tank is) was cracked, and the concrete cleanout cover was askew. Well, in digging for he found the top is completely cracked, in fact, it fell into the tank, so now we have a large stinky hole into the septic tank. I have a call in to the people who service my son's aerobic septic system, which mine is not, to see how much for a new cover, cleanout and system check would be compared to a new aerobic system. I've heard that if a new system has problems, the companies are not allowed or supposed to "fix" it, that you need to get a new aerobic system. I'm not looking forward to that, and if they can just replace the cover, I think that would be great, and a lot less expensive.

We have looked at existing homes, and have found a couple that we liked, but they all had problems of some sort - bad neighbors/neighborhood, too small yard, too many stairs, strange layout of the rooms/access to the rooms, etc. We've also looked at custom plans to build, and find some that are mostly what we want, but not everything. IF we get new, I definitely need an area/room large enough for my fabric, crafts, sewing machines, and work area. LOL!

Hugs and prayers, Marlee. So sorry you are going through all this with your family.

And YAY! Ed found where the roof is leaking and now he can caulk it before the rains come tonight. He is going to use RV caulk to do this.

HEADS UP: In the past week I have received 2 emails that appeared to be from the US Postal Service. They aren't. They appear to reference a package that could not be livered, but they contain a link that probably contains a virus. One even has the USPO logo clearly on it and the other references the Daily email that lets you know what mail you will be getting that day. I gave both of them to my postmistress, and she said she had a talk today with her employees so they knew if any customers on their route might mention getting an email. She is sending them on to the appropriate authority. She already knew that another customer had gotten one.

Regarding my septic system - we had it pumped today and Ed went and picked up a new concrete top for it. The person who pumped it out said it did not need to be replaced - WHEW! We don't know how old it is, but it is OLD! The addition was added to this house in the 1950s, but this tank could be even older.

The ones I get most are from fake law enforcement charities. Law enforcement agencies do not call for money. I have noticed that most of them come from little towns in south Texas I have never heard of before. I bundle with my cable provider and slowly they are identifying scam calls. It'll say it's a fraudulent call or scam. I'll be glad when they are able to label all.

Nowadays the scammers use phone from the area so people will think it is someone local calling them. I never say anything first and usually they hang up. They are getting more creative all the time. Too bad that don't put that creativity to work in an honest job.

I got a call on my cell from my cell phone number. Weird! I usually block the numbers but I didn't do that one. Not knowing what it would do, I didn't want to mess something up on my phone.
