Earning Farmgirl Sisterhood Merit Badges

Each Other

8. Connecting Growers and Eaters

Beginner Level

  • Volunteer to work in a local community garden or a neighbor’s garden for at least six hours.

Intermediate Level

  • Find a farmer or gardener who would be willing to let you glean the extras from their bounty for delivery to a local “Meals on Wheels” or food bank. Make the connection delivery ten times.

Expert Level

  • Organize a “food bank garden” group and actively donate daily time to it during one growing season. If you have a community garden, you might create a gleaning program there or round up gardeners who want to participate. Record the group’s progress and report it to your chapter if you are a member of one. Consider organizing a “food for a cause” fund raiser or “adopt-a-row” party or event and have donors pay for the materials to keep the garden idea alive for another year.
