Beginner Level

• Nervous about operating a chainsaw? Ask yourself why: Probably every day, you take a lot more than 10 pounds of steel into your own hands, fire it up, point it in the direction you want it to go, give it the gas, and back down your driveway. Driving a vehicle carries a ton (around two, to be exact) more risk than putting your hands on a chain saw. Once you get the hang of it, handling a chain saw can be as routine as driving a car.
• Now that we've gotten that pesky voice out of your head and you're getting more excited, research what kind of chainsaw you'd like to purchase: size, weight, electric, gas-powered, etc.
• Start collecting the accessories you're going to need for your saw (I mean, a girl's got to accessorize, am I right?). Your list might include:
  • Ear Protection
  • Eye Protection
  • Hard Hat
  • Protective Apron Chaps
  • Sturdy Lug-sole Boots
  • Gloves
  • Gas Container
  • 2-cycle Engine Oil
  • Bar Oil
  • Splitting Maul and Axe

Intermediate Level

• Look for chainsaw classes offered in your area.

Expert Level

• Now that you're ready and have your chainsaw, let's get buzzin'. Identify your first project: Are you cutting logs for your wood-burning stove, cutting down a Christmas tree, making furniture, removing overgrowth?
• Make sure to always use your eye and ear protection, as well as wearing your hardhat and apron chaps. Safety first!
• Now that you're less intimidated by the art of the chainsaw, it's time to share your knowledge and hobby with another farmgirl.
