I turned 51 last month . I feel so tired lately . I just feel like sitting around or sleeping. I have never felt like this. Im usually up and at it. Is it my age . Could it be stress related . Have been under alot of stress lately . Or do i need to start taking vitamins at my age . I have never taken vitamins. What do you think?

I felt like that for awhile when I was your age. Turned out, I was anemic. I was put on iron tablets and felt better really soon. You might want to have your doctor check for anemia.
I know it sounds a bit old fashioned, but I have been taking Geritol tablets for probably 15 years or more and swear by them!!! Wal-Mart usually has them.

I second or third or fourth the thyroid suggestions. Some of the other signs are dry skin and nails, hair falling out, unexplained weight gain and oddly enough, a change in the outer third of your eyebrows. Talk to your doctor and after six weeks on medication, you should feel lots better.

Gotta agree with Annette. Only be sure to ask for FREE T-3 and FREE T-4, with a TSH test as well, because the regular thyroid tests don't always show anything. My regular ones always showed up normal but I was so tired I couldn't put one foot in front of the other. A naturopath ordered the tests that I list and, bingo, I was off the charts low. She then ordered the various thyroid antibodies tests and I was eventually diagnosed with both Hashimoto's and Graves disease which one would think are mutually exclusive. But one can have the antibodies for both and depending on the day can be either too low or too high - both which make you so tired you just want to give up. So, yep...get to the doctor!!! And good luck. :-)

Some good advice so far. No it is not age. I thought in my 50, was so tired all the time I said if this is what it is like to get old I want no part of it
It was low thyroid low Vit D levels and gall bladder disease
I just turned 69 and still going strong. Eat organic, take vitamins get a physical every year. Don't take iron without dr advice. It can be dangerous. But you should be taking calcium for your bones hair and teeth plus it will give you nice nails.
My mom is 89. She is still going but is starting to slow down a little.
Age gets blamed for too many things. Do not accept it as an excuse. Your body
Needs something it is not getting. Good luck

Dorinda, I suppose it *could* be age related, but I'm only 28 and have periods of tiredness myself. I don't take vitamins on a regular basis, but when I'm feeling a lack of energy, vitamins B & E help a lot. Then sometimes when I am not sleeping well, calcium before bed does wonders for me.

Of course, a doctor will know more, but vitamins can't hurt you.

Hi..Yep, get to a doctor for a complete blood work up. They can rule out all kinds of disorders. You could be beginning to have thyroid issues...not enough T-4 or may be not converting some of the T-4 you have to T-3. My husband had that happen to him. He was always a go getter, then he noticed that drop in energy..turns out not enough T-3. But you have to argue to get the test done as usually if T-4 numbers come back okay, they think you can convert it...many of of as we get older can no longer convert part of T-4 we have naturally to T-3. Next, something as simple as not enough Vit. D can cause fatigue. Have them test your levels. There are so many underlying reasons so blood work is the best. A good mix of Vit B is essential, but be careful with iron. A blood test will show if you are beginning to become anemic, but that can be caused by underlying conditions that need treatment. Stress can make people tired, but I always have learned that usually there is something else going on in the body. 51 is young by todays standards. We slow down a bit, but should not feel tired. Perhaps you have sleep apnea and don't know it. Just get checked out. When you catch some of these things early, it is just a few weeks and your back to your older Younger feeling self.
Best to you!
Annie

Stress can make you tired. I know it does for me because I don't get that "deep sleep" that our bodies need. How have you been sleeping at night? I would take B vitamins and maybe some iron. If you have not been into the Doctor's recently it may be a good time to go in and have them do a check up and run some blood work. At least that will rule out anything metabolic. The other thing to try is trying to eat a more natural/organic diet. Since I cut out the processed prepared foods I use to eat and sugar I have been feeling alot better and seem to have more energy.

Dorinda, I am 52 & have started to notice I get tired in the afternoon, but if I work out 30 min to 1 hour (like a 4 mile walk or 15 mile bike ride) I feel more energized & sleep better too.

I am only 41 but have periods of the same thing and I take b12 vitamins but you could also try a multi vitamin for everyday .

I guess I should say go to the Doctor. But, all that's ever netted me is not much useful info and a large dr bill. I feel the same, off and on. I think at our age (I'm a tad older than you), it's prolly normal. I take iron when I feel sluggish and other assorted vits/min whenever I think I need them. I don't take vit/mins regularly, just when I feel not right. Usually, it straightens me right up.

Another thing, now that I have a 'job' which I'm very engaged and interested in, my energy level has come back. I'm living my life on my terms (as long as I financially can!!) and it's paying dividends.
