our goats eat a feed, free range during the day and have hay, but i would like to give them a little treat now and then to help socialize them.
our bottle fed goat, sweetie-sweet is about as social as she can be, but the other goats are a little shy.
can any one tell me about "treats"that you feed your goats, ie, carrots, apples, etc.
i know that goats have the reputation for eating anything, but i also understand that they can get sick from eating the wrong things.
thanks,
fran

Grace,

We buy out of date bread products from the bread store for animal feed, a few times ago i got almost 100 bags of powdered donuts. Now they will fight over them! They like bagels too, sour dough bread, tortillas. They dont care much for wheat bread tho

Powdered donuts is a new one on me!!

I must admit salty is my goats favorite and that licking post is ME!!
Yep, if I go out there with shorts on it is so funny but then it get's to be not so funny. Mishka ( my baby two year old who was a house bottle kid ) is the worst. I never taught them this and it is not something I recommend because imagine 20 goats pushing and fighting to get their lick in - could be dangerous.....

Hi Frannie great to see your bunnies carpooling - such smart little sweet ones.

Goat treats - well, my billies think anytime they can lick my legs that is a huge treat!! I am not kidding they love licking my legs...

I am not a treat giver but I have been known on a goats birthday or when I think we all need a pick me up - homemade oatmeal and carrot cookies is the treat. I make them with molasses not sugar and very little butter so as not to add pounds to any of us. It is also something I can eat if I get stuck in the birthing barns - one bit for me - 20 some bites for the goats and a huge bit for the Great Pry named Chief. Heck no wonder I never get more then the one bit!!

Great to see your name on the site and hope the health is on the steady incline...

yes, i was surprised to see this post pop up again, but that is one of the things i do love about this site.
now i only have 2 goats, until our health improves and with only two goats and 16 acreas they get a great variety of goodies. i still like to give them an apple now and then, but when i really have a question all things goat and sheep if i dont get a response then i email grace gerber.
thanks though for sending some new responses my way, i am always ready to learn something new.

I just saw this and was wondering who all these new farmgirls were . Then I saw the date. Wow, 3 years ago.

Mine also get all the corn leaves and shucks. They have eaten most everything in their yard so now I am scrounging for stuff. If I see maple branches under trees on the sides of roads I stop and load up. I also got a truck load of privet hedge a friend had trimmed off her bushes. When I weed the gardens they get all that, too. They love apples. So I cut them up real small and give them a handfull.

Yes, goats are picky eaters!

so of course there has been many phone calls back and forth till everything was known. her husband was not one of the casualties, but i pray for all the moms, wives and children who were affected by this. please pray for them and thanks for all yalls good info, i know my goats will also appreciate it.

Our goats like to eat carrot tops. They love grain so much, it is their "treat" (they only get a little bit). I know of one lady who gives her goats an animal cracker for a treat. Another lady gives her goats a few peanuts (in the shell). I've also read about giving kid goats a few raisins as treats.

Yes, goats are picky about what they will eat and we as their caregivers should also be as careful about what we feed them. I too lost a goat to bloat. You think giving them something they really like to eat is being nice to them, but if you aren't careful it can make them very sick and possibly worse.

Our goats love anything salty! Yepper we give em ritz occassionaly and also i buy greens throughout the winter then grow some specially for them. Yes i agree with the rest they can be very very fussy!! Ms. Rosie May eats just about anything and Beau is a little more finicky. I do know from a bad experience a freind had they cannot eat corn, or alphafa, they lost 2 goats from bloat. If you have a farm store nearby i buy mine horses some apple, peanut butter cookies, our goats love em too and they are not bad for them either. Thought bout makin some for everyone. Maybe we should start a cookie line for farm animals!!LOL

Bananas and apple peices are what I have used the most. They love ritz crackers too..although I don't suppose that is the healthiest snack. A handful of dandelion greens is always relished too.
I know giving them regular bread isn't a good idea..or anything with alot of sugar. My little angora doe loves banana peels..if they are fresh and havn't touched the ground.
Goats are fussy, and it is funny how people don't realize that.

My goats love apples, carrots and most anything else I've grown in the garden. Goats really don't eat anything. they can be quite fussy and generally avoid anything poisonous.
