The following seeds from Baker Heirloom Seeds are in-route to me as I type.
Alabama red okra to be planted in 2 large round containers. Okra will go in front of raised beds in side yard. Okra is kin to hibiscus so they too have beautiful flowers. Should look pretty from the street.
Mix Zinnia in long container on sunny part of back deck.
Mitsuba or Japanese parsley can be planted in part-shade so in container on shady part of back deck.
Giant of Italy parsley & moss curled parsley both in containers on sunny part of back deck.
I will start all seeds in their containers outside. No room inside to start seeds. Last frost date for my area is Mar 18, so I'll have to wait until I get the seeds packets to know when I can sow the seeds.

Me too Sara!! Funny, ice tea in December. Crazy huh?? I had a rooter popsicle while sitting in the porch cooling down from raking up my garden! Shorts and t shirt! Let's see what January/February brings! I've noticed when the end months are warm we get hit with a snow storm in march!! Lol

Annie and I sat out on the back deck in the sunshine. I drank iced tea and she begged ice cubes. It's warm here today but the breeze is cool. All my herbs and container roses are doing good. Our coldest months are coming up - Jan & Feb - sometimes Mar is cold too. My sister mentioned the other day that it was time to get peas in the ground. I don't plant peas, but come Feb or as soon as Kelly's has them in I'll put out a bunch or two of green onions. Happy garden planning everyone.

Love that Cindy!!! I wanted to do that but pallets are HARD to come by here!!! Working in cleaning the garden up and anxiously awaiting spring now that the holidays are over! Making my bakers seed heirloom order! Yippee!

I have found a use for an old wooden pallet. Turn it up on it's side (secured with garden stakes) and use it as a succulent planter. I found some long pots that fit nice and snug in between the timber and filled them with succulent potting mix. I haven't planted them all out yet, but here's the result so far. Eventually the plants will spill out over the edges and start disguising the pallet.

My garden is now winding down. Potatoes are dug, some carrots dug, corn is done. Cucumbers, beans, pumpkin, tomato, and broccoli are still going. Hoping i find some watermelon or cantaloupe out amongst the vines. Pumpkins are taking over. I look forward to the end of the season, like I do the beginning.

I cut back my grandmother's irises this morning. I'll move some of them around the first of Nov. That's the time to thin or move irises in my part of Texas.

I am happy to say, last years chives had sprouted seeds and have popped up,, the strawberries, grapes, raspberries, gooseberry and Johannesbaren-berries and asparagus are popping and doing well.
I planted 8 garlic cloves severals weeks ago,, and 5 of the 8 are popping up..
As for my tomatoes, peppers and baby sweet pumpkin,, they are getting lanky, I need to get them out into the garden in the next day os two...

Hi, Girls!
My sister had a laundry room full of seed starts this year. . .she has begun to get them all outside and is very happy with her prospects for her garden this year!
She planted tons of tomatoes and wants to make all of her own sauce, diced tomatoes, paste, and green tomato relish, YUMMY! She has planted broccoli, tomatillos, carrots, onions, celery, cabbage, and cauliflower, too! She has berries, apples, cherries, and pears. Almost forgot her herb garden that is new this year!
She also raises chickens for eggs as well as meat chickens. She bow hunts elk on her property; I was fortunate enough to be there to help harvest the last one! When I get to go up during rainy season we also harvest mushrooms.
She has a heavenly place!

Thanks, girls - I just really need to re-evaluate how I start my seeds, I think. And sometimes, it's just not meant to be! I was just hoping to get a jump on the cool weather crops and have the warm weather veggies ready to go after the last first frost. It's okay. All is not lost! It's still only April 16th!

Well, last week I planted two more of three potato beds and a huge bed of onions. My seedlings under the hoop house thingy majiggy I made are growing beautifully! Today we planted a whole bunch of broccoli, cabbages, brussels sprouts, a little lettuce and some chocolate mint. Things are looking up! :) Before you know it, it will be time to plant tomatoes and cukes and melon and... well.. you get the idea! ;)

in spite of this cold dreary weather..
as for my Geraniums..
they want to go outside,, and bloom,, but it's still toooo cold!
And,, I know my Gnomes are getting antsy.. they are starting to peek out of their hobbit hole...
ya know what they say,," I'm Hangin' with my Gnomies''... lol!

Woke to 17' degrees this A.M... uugh... and we got Hail the other day.(poor MaryJane & JeanP got snow the other day, if I am not mistaken)..so it's going to be a bit longer before I can roll up my sleeves and play in the dirt...

I think starting form seed is always a challenge. I have not had good luck with much of anything except maybe sunflowers, which will grow easily. But Sharon, I agree with you that you have to be patient and let things happen as Mother Nature intends.

When I begin to get impatient with my seeds, wondering if they will ever send up shoots, I remind myself that there is a lot going on “behind the scenes” in the darkness beneath the surface. That tiny seed has to break open & begin to absorb the nutrients in the soil; it needs to send its roots deep & wide in order to withstand whatever nature throws its way. If everything happens too fast, that plant will wither & succumb to the heat of the sun or the weight of pelting rain. So I attempt to refrain from asking them to hurry up-but I do sing songs of encouragement[;)! |

Waiting for seeds to sprout is akin to watching water boil - it takes forever. The Japanese parsley seeds have come up but the other two parsley have not.
Yesterday my sister and I went to Kelly's fruit & veg stand to see what plants were out. I bought 8 herb plants - basil, oregano, marjoram, sage, Italian parsley, chocolate mint, and peppermint. I sowed Italian parsley but since parsley is hard to germinate I decide to get the Italian parsley plant. Now to see if the curly parsley seeds make it.
The herb plants are beautiful and healthy so I'm happy they survived the freeze. Kelly's has at least two other fruit/veg stands I know of in other towns. There are two large greenhouses at the Paris stand and many others at Johnstown so I know he grows the plants he sells.

Sorry to hear that Nini, though I have to admit my seed starting is not looking to well either. I have a few seeds come up but nothing is growing. It is just sitting there......... I moved them from the window, to under a light and still nothing. Time will tell. I did put some seed in my two raised beds. Lettuce, onions, carrots and radishes. Will see what happens with them. I have the one covered and sounds like I may need to cover the other one, going to get chilley again.

Well, my seed starting was a total flop. I tried; I really, really tried... I have no idea what the heck I did that went wrong. I had some really leggy squashes come up (all the squash I started), and some cucumbers, but that was it. I was going to transplant the squash the other day, got too busy, and came out to find that all of them and the cuke starts had died. I'm just going to direct-sow as much as I can in a few weeks, and suck it up and buy a few things at the nursery. When all else fails, punt! Right?
On a happier note, all my cold weather veggies I direct-sowed have come up and are doing great! I planted two beds of potatoes and an entire bed of onion starts yesterday, too! It's so satisfying to be back out there in the dirt, but man-oh-man am I starting to feel my age! When all was said and done, I felt bro-ken! LOL! My WORD am I out of shape after this past winter! For SHAME! I'll be working on that this spring and summer, for sure. ;)

Sara I'm so happy your rose made it!
I keep a rosemary plant in my kitchen, it won't survive outside here. I usually plant sage as an annual but I think one of my 2 plants survived the winter. Glad I didn't dig them up before the snow started. I left them in because they just kept on growing for me so I was picking as long as I could. The oregano and thyme always survive winter for me.

Andrea, I always wanted to try my hand at growing horseradish but never got around to it. May try again in the fall.
Checked my herbs yesterday and looks like I lost half of my trailing rosemary plants, both sage plants, Italian oregano, and maybe Texas tarragon(Mexican marigold) to the 7 below temps we had in Feb. Syrian oregano and lemon thyme were damaged but survived.
I am happy to report my container Republic of Texas yellow rose made it. Right after the freeze it looked like it was done for, but heirloom roses are hardy and it has leafed out - that's why I like growing them.

Whooo Hooo Sherone!! It's always nice to see something growing after a long winter.
Yesterday I checked my garden and was very happy to see horseradish coming up. I bought it on-line and received some twigs, couldn't tell the top from the bottom. Didn't grow at all. The next year I bought from another place (on-line) and the same thing happened. Planted some horizontal, some vertical, nothing came up. Went to a local farm store about a year ago and they had some in the cooler with a little green on top. Planted it and it grew great. Never thought I would find it at a farm store ready to plant.

Oh Sherobe, how lucky you are! I'd love to grow rhubarb but it does not like our hot muggy weather!
The greenhouse is full and many of my perennials are popping up as well as the blackberries and elderberries. Did not plant yet according to farmers almanac, said to wait till after Good Friday. Normally I don't follow this but last three years I replanted several times from March to April and it was costly. This year I've waited. Good thing too!! It was 32 last night and frost expected tonight!! I'm a believer!!

Big news on the homestead - There is a tiny bit of Rhubarb peaking out through the mulch!! Snow is expected tomorrow, so not much going on in the garden. We did plan what we are putting in the herb garden, the greenhouse, potato bed, and the other beds. That is is huge for us!!

I thinned the carrot patch this morning - a couple of feet in raised bed. I used an old pair of embroidery scissors to cut out unwanted seedlings so no roots were disturbed.

Thank you Nini! The good Lord has taught me much through this experience! I have use of it but its very limited now. Succession planting, thats what I was trying to type in my conversation but I had a teen talking to me at the same time, lol! Its a wonder I did not sound drunk!! Yes, I've been WANTING to do this but haven't and thought I'd try it this year. I too have been blessed! No matter how I plant! I certainly am a novice at it! All the best to you too this growing season!!
