This year's International Herb Society Herb of the Year is a really good one. Viola violet family which includes pansies and heartease aka Johnny-jump-up.

For new FarmGirls each year we celebrate our FarmGirl Jubilee and MaryJane's birthday in May. Some of us plant the Herb of the Year or a rose in celebration. I post the Herb of the Year early so those who wish to plant it can add it to their garden shopping list.

Hugs, Sara

Thank you, Sara, for selecting and announcing the herb of the year. I personally LOVE ginger. I will strive to celebrate ginger this year with you farmgirls and think of new ways to use it at home. I'm already a candied ginger sort of girl, ginger tumeric teas are a favorite of mine as well. I personally would like to experiment cooking with it, so, inspiried, I will look for a few new recipes that include ginger and venture out of my little box. Hugs!

In the past I have announced the International Herb Society Herb of the Year. This year it is ginger.

Last year there was a discussion on having different Farmgirls pick the herb of the year each year. I think that is a great idea so if you want to choose the herb this year and keep up with the thread please do so. I will no longer be hosting the Herb of the Year thread.

Shelia isn't it fun when a plant naturalizes. The heat and no rain for weeks did my wild violets that I had transplanted in. Hope some of them come back next year.

Well I was watering my violets in their big pot, when I noticed that there was a violet on the ground quit aways from the pot of them. I thought one of them must have gotten ripped out, I went over to look and to my surprise it had seeded in the lawn. I am so happy for my little baby one on her/his own!

So, I had to run into the Euro deli to pick up a few items... and on the counter sat a flower pot with a huge Violet plant in full bloom! we're talking "Violets on steroids! LOL!
I meant to take a photo but in my haste, forgot..
So when I got home.. I had a long talk with my puny violet plant that is being lazy and not giving me flowers!
Hopefully it got the message, and will give me some bloom...

Sheila your embroidery is beautiful!!

Wawho I saw some Viola being sold at the local general store, I told my husband if the ones I have do not germinate that I was going to buy them at the first store I see them, and I did. I am so happy, I am transplanting them to a bigger pot (not to big, and per my husband the nursery man) will put some tree chips in the bottom so the soil does not get to wet. I will still wait and see if the others germanite. I just found out that I can take pictures with my iPod touch, but do not know how to send them with my sister I would attach it to her Tex Messaging I do not know how to send it to other people. If anyone knows how let me know, thanks.

Hi Grace my violets have not done anything yet even being under a grow light I hope I did not get a bad batch of seeds! my husband said what I saw poking out were just a weed from the potting soil. I keep looking every day hoping. I think if I see some grown at the store I will buy them and some catnip to grow for our cat Merlin.

My violets are in potting soil and I think I have one or two poking up out of the soil. My husband went and got some grow lights so keep your fingers crossed. I can't wait.

I didn't order violet seeds because they are to be sown in the fall in my part of Texas. But all is not lost. I will have violets for the Jubilee. The wild violets I transplanted out of my yard several years ago have come back and are blooming. I have them in beds on both sides of sidewalk at front porch steps. I love plants that come back year after year.

Hi Grace, I checked with the post office in our old town we moved from, and the mail guy we know at the post office there said he never got the forwarding notice. He said when we send it off to the main postoffice for Vermont they are suppose to let the old post office know there is a forwarding form in. He never got that notice.
We have been having trouble with that since we moved to the town that is about 20 min from our old house. Did you put a return address on it? because it is suppose to come back to you.
I am so so sorry about this.

Katmom,
I love your violet embroidery.
I totally can see you making it on a hankie, linen kitchen towel or maybe the bib of an apron.
Great Job**
