Awhile back I posted about a trove of fabrics that I scored, including some unfinished quilts and Dresden plate cut pieces…
Well I finally sewed and ironed them, now to create something with them.

I am confident that some of the fabric might be vintage feed sack…
It will be like putting a jigsaw puzzle together when I go to lay it out, as some fabrics I have multiples while others I only have 1 or 2.
Wish me luck!

Grace, these are some awesome old fabrics to work with. I love all the various patterns and interested in what you decide would use them best. Be sure to post your final project so we can see.

Krista,, I am actually thinking about making a table runner, 1 piece wide and 6 pieces long,, or maybe 2 pieces
wide and 3 pieces long.. I'll have to play around with the size..

LOL! I swear, I do occasionally clean up my sewing room,,, but... guess what I find on the floor, behind the door this morning??? yep another piece...
Now I am thinking a little Gremlin (aka kitty) may have something to do with the pieces on the floor... Hmmm?

Grace, you could put each one on a square and hook all the squares together to make a table runner. Or maybe even end table toppers. The apron would be super cute as well.

Ok, sew... this morning, while I was vacuuming my sewing room,, guess what I found under my ironing board???
yep!!! 1 piece/petal from the Dresden plates pre-cut fabric..
I must have dropped it while ironing the pieces,, so I don't have to cut out 1 petal after all... lol!

You have reminded me that I have some butterfly appliqués that my great grandmother made but never got put into a quilt before she passed. I'll have to go and dig them out and do something with them before yet another generation passes.

Such a great score. I love the idea about adding them to an apron. And using yo-yos for the middles!! Great ideas, girls!! :)

How neat, Grace, I love finding vintage post cards, I even save every modern day postcard I receive as well.
One of your beautiful yo yo's would look lovely in the middle of each design, sort of like a flower. Perhaps use them to place on top of a quilt? Or, apron like Heather suggested? So pretty! Have fun!

Debbie K., I laid them out at 14 pc per plate I am 1 short of 6 plates but on the plus side, I just happen to have a few small scra pieces of feed sack that I can cut out the 1 piece I need. Heehee!

Oh Heather, what a great idea! I might have to make a bibbed apron and appliqué the Dresden plate piece on the bib part of the apron!

Jean,, the address on the post card is from Burbank California..
Yep, luv all the sweet fabrics..
one thing I noticed about feed sack cloth in general, is that the small to med sized bags had rather small prints’ where as the large bags.. could afford to have larger designs.

What a treasure Katmom. And the history that goes with it is precious. Was the location on the card in Spokane or nearby? I enlarged the photos and recognized many feedsack prints. And, of course, as we have found out, they were flourishing in the 40's. So it all fits together. Have fun. I'll be anxious to see what you do with this. Happy sewing. . .

jean

That is such a fun find AND story!!!
My grandma sent me a bunch of unfinished Dresden plates that her aunt had made. I appliqued them to a background square and added a center circle….and finished them into a quilt. It’s one of my favorites.
How many plates did you get?

What a neat story! I don't know how you would do it - I've never done the Dresden plate stuff - but I think it would be cute to put a couple of those on an apron skirt.

That’s amazing That the quilt pieces had the postcard so you could track down the information. 75 year old fabric! Way to score Grace.

Debbie, here is the fun part,,
I "google earth" and found the address that was written on the post card that the template was cut from...
The house is still standing and it is in a nice cute little neighborhood,,, The house was built in 1945 and the post card is dated 1947....
I am assuming the person that the card was sent to lived in the house... oh my gosh! that was almost 75 years ago!!! so the post card is 75y/o,, which helps
me with the approximate date of the fabrics...
Now I wonder,, if all the unfinished quilts are from the addressee on the post card... 'Mrs Lillie Scoville,,,
So it's possible the unfinished quilts might be from the 1940'-50's...???
