Many. many moons ago, I had a lovely Christmas cactus plant that was a 'start' from a dear sweet neighbor... after moving to Washington, then back to Calif., I could no longer drag the plant along with me,, so before moving back to Washington, I bequeathed it to a plant loving friend.. she also got all my Violets...

Well,, I for what ever reason never replaced that cactus plant, and honestly hadn't seen any.. then the other day I had to dash into Wal-mart for some red cotton fabric (to finish up a gift)... and as I entered the store,, there was a rack with about 2 dozen, somewhat sad looking Christmas cactus' ,,, so I found one that I liked and now it is home with me.. and today, it looks a bit perkier...
I can hardly wait for the buds to pop open

Basement should work just fine. Check the leaves before watering. The leaves hold water so when they show signs of drying it's time to water. Sometimes it's hard for me to remember they are cacti and the leaves still have enough water even if the soil is dry to an inch or two.

Thank you for that info. I have wondered about putting it in the basement where it's dark. Should I water it when its down there or just check the leaves and water then while it's down there?

Denise, I keep it in the shade. It's in the west window now but only gets filtered sun for a couple of hours a day. The sideporch (carport) & neighbor's gaint oak tree keeps that side of my house in shade until the sun gets low in the sky before it sets. Then the sun shines into the lower part of that window.

After it finishes blooming I will put it back into the tub until spring with shower curtain drawn. No sunlight. I'll water it only if the leaves start to show signs of needing water.

After the threat of frost has passed I'll put it out on the back deck in the shade. It will stay there with no water except for rain until it begins to bloom again in the fall. If there is danger of frost before it begins to bloom I will bring it in and keep it away from sunlight. When first buds appear I will water & ferterize; place in west window and the cycle begins again.

Do you keep yours in a sunny spot Sara?
We don't have much sun here right now but I do water it when then top inch or so starts to feel dry. I also feed it and then I get new growth but no blooms.

Kathy, I'm so your Christmas cactus didn't make it.

After my red Christmas cactus bloomed at Thanksgiving I put it in the bathtub in hall bathroom to give it a rest. This week it starting blooming again so I watered it for the first time since Nov and put it in the living room's west facing window. It looks out onto the side porch so it only gets late afternoon sun as the sun sets. So far this blooming is not as showy as at Thanksgiving but it's still pretty.

I saw Graces photos last summer and thought I would like to have a Christmas Cactus also. I checked the local nursey's and no one had a plant. Not too long and QVC had them so I ordered one and like all other house plants that I bring home... I killed it deader that a door nail! I don't know why or how houseplants do not thrive for me other than philidandrand. I have tried many different kinds and they don't survive.

Beautiful, Grace! I have a youngin' that was a start off a Christmas cactus of my mothers plant. She's had this plant for nearly 20 years, the stem of the plant resembled a tree trunk, as she has cut it back so many times and it would come back bigger and better each year. Sadly, she lost this plant about a year ago... so, I'm looking forward to my youngin' growing just the same!

I know all plants bloom when God has programmed them to do so, but there is still something magical to me about how a Christmas cactus knows “ Christmas is coming”!!!

I forgot all about this and I’m sad because I never got one. I’ll have to get with my mother in law again and see if she is still willing to share. They are so pretty.

I once had a beautiful Christmas Cactus that grew into such a huge plant that the stem split. I took pieces and made them into new baby plants but none of them ever really did anything. They usually do well down here in Florida so I should really try to get a plant going again. They are gorgeous when the plant gets big and fills up with blooms.

Oh I wish mine would bloom again. I repotted it into a bigger container but it has only had two blooms on it since then and that was last year or the year before, I can't remember. It blooms at odd times too. Not sure why it isn't blooming anymore.

It's been almost a year since we talked about our Christmas cactus. I have two - one red - the other white - and they are more of a Thanksgiving cactus. Buds started appearing a couple of days ago on both. They have been outside on the deck in shade since last spring; only getting water when it rained. Temps will dip down into the 30s tonight so I brought them in. It will be good to see them in full bloom again.

I recently purchased a small white Christmas cactus at our local garden center. It's the smallest Christmas cactus that I've seen. It's super cute. I really am excited to watch it grow as the years go by.

Blessings to you all!!

I received a red Christmas cactus from my nephew's church today. It's beautiful. My hope is it does as well as the white one they gave me last year.

My mother in law just bought a little one. I didn't think about getting a start from it - I'll have to look into how to do it. Who knows - maybe 100 years from now it'll still be blooming LOL!! That really is amazing Diana!!!

Christmas cactus are just beautiful with all the different colors now. I had a beautiful dark pink one for years that grew huge and bloomed every Christmas season. Then one year, the stem just split and the plant died. I couldn't get the broken pieces to root either. Since then, I haven't had one, but I saw them in the grocery store last week, so I might try my luck again with growing one. They are striking when they get big and blooms are everywhere!!

Diana,
Do you keep your's in that spot year round? I'm trying to figure out where I should have this plant in order for it to do well. Mine has leaves like it is a Thanksgiving cactus but the buds are just coming on so I'm not sure when it will bloom. I never knew different leaves meant what time of year it would bloom.

I was at my mother in laws yesterday and seen one of these Christmas Cactus. I had no idea she had one since its in one of the bedrooms. Its already blooming a beautiful red! She told me that I could take some starts off of it. I'm going to do some research and take some starts. You ladies have inspired me!

Waiting not so patiently for mine to bloom. It has buds on it. It's weird as I've had it bloom at thanksgiving, Christmas and Valentine's and st. Patrick's day. One right after another same plant. The buds would all fall off and more would come on.

Diana, that is amazing! That plant is very precious. And they are beautiful.

Do Christmas Cactus only bloom this time of year? I’m intrigued by them! Are their any small ones or are they all large?
