There is a great sale on organic milk this week and I wondering, can I freeze it in the 1/2 gallon containers or will it separate or spoil??

I freeze milk all the time. I buy it in the 1/2 gallon cartons not plastic jugs. The cartons give so you don't have to open it up at all. It keeps a long time. We always keep one thawing as we get low and rotate. One is low, one is thawing and ready by the time we need it. Never thought about shaking it up. Doesn't seem to separate though. Much nicer to be able to have it on hand this way. It is no different than fresh really.

I freeze milk as well; and have also learned the hard way that you do not want to freeze a full container. I always pour out about 4 oz. (half a glass or so, drink up!) to leave enough air space, then put the lid back on. If it's a plastic lid that doesn't screw back on, just put some saran wrap over, then push the plastic lid back on. Keep the containers upright in freezer, too. Sometimes I will fill several smaller containers and use those, but usually it's easier to store the half gallon jugs. DH has had some icy flakes in his cereal once in a while, but usually I remember to thaw it ahead of time and then give it a good shake; just like fresh. (This works well for buying the gallon size container and pouring into re-used half gallon containers; you can save some $$$ buying the larger size.)

When we lived in Japan the milk on base always came to us frozen. The first time I ever saw that done I was in shock. The only advice I was given was too be certain that I didn't refreeze it once it was thawed.

Heather, yes I open my milk before I freeze it. I break the seal, pour out a little to create a "headspace", and then screw the cap back on tight. I've never had a problem doing it this way.

I have not tried it yet, but I have a sister who does it all the time and swears by it. Right now I am sad to say that my big chest freezer is empty and unplugged. I plan on filling it up once we move (Good Lord willing...). I really do intend to try freezing milk when it goes on sale eventually.

My Mom use to freeze milk when my Dad was alive. He was in the Navy and we would get a case of milk at a time.(4 per case)...She would put 2 in the freezer and keep 2 out. It was great. I do it when I find organic milk on sale. The half gallon cartons are the best to freeze.

I have frozen milk before and found that goat's milk dosn't separate at all like cows milk does. I still freeze some now and then. Right now we go through SO much milk that I buy 6 to 10 gallons at a time and that is only a week's worth..no reason to freeze. I couldn't fit a month's worth IN my freezer..haha. At least when Mona calves again I won't have to worry about that..we will be drowning in milk again...but what a way to go!!
It does freeze well..just hard to get it thawed right in my opinion...always a little bit of ice left in it.

I freeze milk ice cubes for the dogs as a treat on hot days, just an idea if you have milk that is going to expire like me because the kids didn't rotate the milk!

yup! I buy and freeze a month's worth of milk at a time. A full freezer costs less to run and so it makes sense to me to have the milk in there. I agree- just let it thaw completely and then shake it really well and it tastes just like fresh! I even like to catch it as it almost but not quite frozen where it is kindof slushy....yumm!

Milk freezes great! Just be sure to shake it up a bit before you use it after it thaws!

My mom used to buy lots of milk when it was on sale and she would freeze the extra. The only problem is if you don't let thaw completely before pouring on your cereal, you'll have more like water with icy milk chunks. It has to be totally thawed before using.

My mom used to freeze milk when I was growing up because she bought a month's worth at a time. I freeze sometimes too.
Just be careful to keep it standing up straight...especially the roundish plastic jugs. Otherwise when a little swelling happens it won't stand up. LOL

Beth...do I open it then and then freeze it??? I would love to keep some on hand with the great prices on Organic that they are having this week. Maybe 4, 1/2 gallons. Do I just take the little ringy thing out and leave the cap a little unscrewed??

I freeze milk all the time, and when it thaws it's just like fresh again. Just remember to leave a little airspace in the jug for expansion before you freeze it (ask me how I know!).

I know people who freeze milk, but they use it for baking instead of drinking when it is thawed. Not sure why. Hope this helps!
