Posted - Aug 19 2008 : 09:38:52 AM My Butternut Squash plant has 3 tiny little squash plants on it. They are maybe 3 inches long. The butternut squashes I have seen before are over a foot long. How long do you think it will be before the squash are harvest ready?

Posted - Aug 19 2008 : 3:40:07 PM Alee, the Burpee website says a butternut takes from 75-85 days depending on the variety. After I read that I then thought isn't that from the day it was planted? I do know they grow pretty fast once the fruit is set. I would think you should be able to harvest some good sized squash before your first frost.
You post got me wondering about mine so I just went out to check. Mine is JUST now flowering so you're way ahead of me!
Happy eating! Audrey

Posted - Aug 19 2008 : 1:37:52 PM Alee, squash is long growing. I think it may be 120 days from germination to harvest, could also be in the 90's. I found one growing out of my compost pile with a couple of little squash on it, but here in so cal we can harvest into Nov. |

Posted - Aug 19 2008 : 12:27:47 PM Hi Belle-
We will start to get frost anywhere between Mid September and mid October. Once the little butternuts start forming- how long does it take them to reach maturity?

When did you plant them? Some of the stuff that takes a long time to produce and mature, I start in the greenhouse. Gives them a month or more head start. I love butternut squash but it is a battle between me and the squash bugs. |
