Several of you have asked for the comfrey salve recipe.... here it is...

Comfrey Salve Recipe

Heat Olive oil just to the boiling point in a stainless steel or glass pan. Add herbs of your choice and simmer, covered, for about 3 hours. If you are using fresh herbs, leave the lid off for the first 30 minutes so the water can evaporate. If you are using bark or roots, place these in the oil first and simmer for the 1-1/2 hours before adding additional leaves and flowers.

Honestly... my "mixture" is based on the herbs I have. Comfrey is the main herb. I am just sure to have enough oil in the pan to cover the herbs. So it usually takes more than a pint because I make big batches so there's enough to share with friends.

After the mixture is ready (I usually can tell because all the herbs get kind of crispy and it smells "done") strain off the herbs. Melt in beeswax. About 1-1/2 ounces per pint of oil. I also add 1/2 tsp tincture of benzoin or some Vitamin E so the salve doesn't have to be refrigerated.

You *can* use coconut oil instead of beeswax, but I have found it needs to be kept in the fridge to stay solid. The salve with coconut oil is in my cupboard - more as a lotion.

To test for consistency, put a small amount of salve on a metal spoon and put in a cup in the fridge. If it is not thick enough when cooled, add more beeswax.

I also keep back a bottle with just the oil and no beeswax. THis is used as a muscle rub or other "oil" need. Works the same. Just isn't thick.

You can use a multitude of herbs in the salve beyond just comfrey.

Here's the list of the healing salve I made in the spring batch of this year.....
Comfrey
Chickweed
Yarrow
Oregon Grape
All-Heal
Mullien
Lavendar
Shepherd's purse
Red Clover
Benzoin
Vitamin E

I would encourage you to look up the uses and benefits of the herbs when you are making the decision to put them in your salve. You can use comfrey alone or mix with others based on what you want it for. I make mine as a general healing salve which seems to cover most of the needs our family has!

If you have questions... please let me know!!

Do what you love, love what you do.

Oh thank you!

DH slathers on the chickweed salve we buy from that Amish company in Ohio.

This stuff grows like crazy around us early spring, so I ought to rathole your recipes and try these!

I also have 2 really big patches of comfrey cause the flowers are pretty, and they call it the medicine cabinet powerhouse herb

What's a good company for buying bulk bees wax?

I put my herbal oils in a crock-pot on low for 8 to 12 hours.
My recipe is 3 cups herbal oils to 1 cup beeswax.
Then just before pouring I add 1 teaspoon Vitamin E, 2 Tablespoons Tea Tree & Lavender Essential Oils.

It's so fun to make wonderful herbal products for family & friends :)

hi...was reading some of the old posts..i use grapeseed oil to. I reaaly like it...i find that it works in well..the more you rub the more you can work it in..when you stop it soaks into skin nicely with no greasy feeling. I even add some to a commercial brand of lotion that some one has given me.. Good way to use up those lotions.. I use it to make my herbal oils also.. I make them individually, then combine oils as needed..

ok a liter of Grape seed oil is 7.99 at my grocery store and the same size of olive oil is 10.99 so the grape seed oil is cheaper and better for you. At least at my store hope they don't figure that out and raise the price.

Too funny! I tried to figure out what it might say if it was a typo but nothing came to mind. So do you use just enough oil to cover whatever amount of herbs you are using?

Holy cow... that was a bad typo. I usually check my posts better than that! Bark or Roots. =)

If I remember correctly the Grape seed oil wasn't much more than the olive oil maybe $2 at the most. I used it in my lip balm too and it worked great.

How much oil and herbs are you using and what are bard or toos? These are new terms to me and when I googled it I didn't come up with anything in relation to herbs.
Thanks

I haven't been able to get a lemony scent by adding lemon balm. BUt it is still good stuff to put in.

Lorie, do you find that grape seed oil is really expensive??? I bet is soaks in very nicely. I have used different oils before. Olive is the least expensive for the mass quantity of salve that I make in a batch.

I didn't add enough to get a lemony scent (maybe next batch) but my salve doesn't have the stinky cooked scent either so maybe it helped out that way. I use grape seed oil in my solid lotion bars as well I would think you could use it ion a lotion or just rub the oil in. I researched it awhile back and liked its properties over any light oil such as almond or olive oil.

Lorie - I take grape seed oil capsules to help with bruising.....I wonder if washing with it would do anything??? I like the idea of the lemon balm, also. Does it give the salve any sort of lemony scent?

Blessed be,
Soleil

I put a bit of lemon balm in my salve for antibacterial properties and use grape seed oil instead of olive oil. Grape seed oil has wonderful healing properties as well and it is also found in the cooking oil section at my local store. I love comfrey!!

I've been making comfrey salve for years. It's great stuff. My daughter used to manage a McDonald's and they always kept a jar of it there for burns. My recipe is a little different that yours...along with the comfrey root mine has chopped up plantain leaves as a main ingredient also. The only thing it's not good for are puncture wounds as it heals too fast!!!

Mine has a funny smell so one of my friends when asking for more, called it that "stinky stuff". The name has stuck. I now make it with and without spearment oil!

Blessed be,
soleil
