Hello Ladies !! I decided it would be too confusing to have a page on Journal Making and Art Journal techniques together. So here is where we can talk and share about the Journal making side of it. I will start with a list that I use..and ideas for using recycled materials for your journals. I will also be showing you a few different binding techniques that I enjoy using and are relatively simple to use.

Ok... list of things you need to Create a hand bound journal...

1. Paper to make your signatures with (This is a grouping of 2 to 6 folios(A piece of paper folded in half)...If you want a light weight one use card stock (Walmart has it around $5 in a color you enjoy) for heavier journal pages I recommend using watercolor paper 100# or 140# paper. But you can make your first one using whatever paper you have. Even brown paper bags.

2. 2 pieces of Heavy cardboard or Binders Board (I order this online at dickblick.com as I am in the middle of no where and no stores close to me )

3. Something to cut or tare your pages to the size you want for your journal.

4. I heavy curved needle or straight needle... upolstery needles work great. I use the curved as it is much easier... but we will use both to show the difference.

5. Binding cord, dental floss or heavy upholstery thread.

6. Whatever you would like to cover your to cover boards. Paper, cloth, recycled receipts,mail,flyers...what ever makes you smile !!!

7. Glue to use to attach things to your covers.

That is all we will need to start with. I am off to take more pictures as I am currently making a new journal. I am so excited to share this with my farmgirl sisters !!! Woo hoo !!! Time to play !!!

OOps...I realized while creating and photographing the journal I am making that I forgot some important tools !!! LOL !! Without one of them this would be really hard !!

8. A thick old phone book

9. Awl,icepick or something you can use to make holes through your signatures and covers

I found a link to a binding method you might enjoy trying. I love this blogger and things she comes up with for using recycled materials. Check it out. Will be back with the binding segment of our journals.

Debbie, You can use as many as you like. I suggest you start with4-5 signatures. Until we learn the stitching technique. Thats great painting the pages ahead.. just leave a few blank as there may be something new you want to try on those blank pages. I'm working on pics for the next steps !! Will return !!!

I'm trying out 2 kinds of paper, the 140# and some thin childrens watercolor paper,
to see how they differ and which one I like best. I cut some out and painted like on
the other post, and cut one cover set. How many pages would you suggest? It's fun so far!

Thanks Kristy :) Yes I have thought about using just cardstock and sew that down the spine, but I really like the idea of using fabric "pages" :). I made 3 pockets yesterday, so have a start already :D

Kristy
Should the pages be painted first and then put the journal together,
or the other way around or does it matter?
My days off are Tuesday and Wednesday so I will be starting tomorrow!
I'm looking forward to a creative day, and trying out your suggestions!
Thanks, Debbie

P.S. Dutchy your scrapbook looks lovely, cute little ribbon flowers!

This is beautiful !! I think your idea with the pocket for adding card stock would work fine. I have also seen where they stitch down the center of the folios onto the spine !! A very pretty application !!!

Today I started with a scrapbook photoalbum. I am planning on adding pictures of my family :)
I really like doing it and almost finished the cover :)It needs some more oomph, maybe ribbon?? I would like to make the pages of pabric too, think it would be best to make a "pocket" and slide some card-stock in it, and sew a line in the middle for a fold?? ANY tips you might give are appreciated. I am a "beginner" on this kind of scrapbooking and REALLY like it

Ok Beautiful Artsy girls..Sorry I have been MIA.. Weather changes here sent me into another Fibromyalgia/arthritis flare up. Under the influence of pain meds.. I do little to NO creating. But feeling better I am ready to get you started creating your first handbound Journal/book.
Here are my steps...
1. What I start doing first is decide what size my journal will be. What I usually do is to conserve paper is just cut or tare my pages in half. But if you are wanting to do a smaller size or bigger....go for it. Just remember that what you are cutting will be folder in half. That folded page(Folio) will be the size of your journal.Ok... go cut how ever many folios you want in your journal. Don't start by making a BIG book.
!

2. Ok.. now you have your folios cut. Now fold those pages in half. I use a bone folder to get a nice crease in them. You can use the back of a spoon of something that does not cut into the paper.

3. Now you take your folded folios and nest them...open up and place one on top of the other. This creates the (Signatures) for your journal. (Tip: If you are using light weight paper you csn hsve 5 to 7 folios in each signiture. IF you are using watercolor paper zi find it best to use only 2 folios in each signature. This is important on the water color paper as it has a tendency to crack if too many folios.)

4. Now I take the little binding clips.. or a paper clip and clip on the top of each of my signatures. You will see why in the next lesson !!

5. You can also cut your Journal covers. They should be the same size as your folded folios. Cut two the same size. Use what you have...cardboard or (cereal boxes.. here I glue several of them together to make a thicker cover.)

Ok... that will get you started. I will be back Monday to add another lesson. If you don't understand something ...post here or email me please !! Happy creating !!
