Posted - Jan 15 2012 : 10:31:05 AM This one takes a bit of backstory: the Mister almost died in an accident a couple of years ago and is still dealing with the side effects (he had to have another operation last week, he has panic attacks and flashbacks, he has some nerve damage...).
To top it off, he led a very hard-partying lifestyle for many years. He's cleaned up his act now, but he still doesn't take care of himself as well as he could (I have the worst trouble getting him to eat properly, yikes).
Anyway, he's had nasty panic attacks the past few weeks--and every time, he ends up knocked completely flat the next few days. He actually gets fevers and aching joints. He also catches every little bug that goes around.
My question is, does anyone have suggestions that might bolster his immune system? We are getting him a supplement from my organic vitamin business next week (mostly vitamin C but with some backup), but I wondered if you gals could think of anything else?
Oh, and he is on medication for his panic attacks--but he refuses to seek other medical help. *sigh*

Posted - Feb 21 2012 : 07:27:09 AM Oh, I know that; I've been hunting for a good herbalist. I never would have thought, though, to look for a talk therapist who was also skilled in holistic medicine. Thank you for the suggestion!
I managed to get him out to take a walk yesterday. He really doesn't exercise, which probably isn't helping matters any.

Posted - Feb 20 2012 : 5:27:11 PM Alyce, herbs are medicine. Don't fool around with them willy-nilly. Get a skilled herbalist to work with you, and give it time. Herbal medicines don't work overnight. It's a lifestyle change.
That said, I'll pass along what I learned from David Hoffmann (author of "The Holistic Herbal" and many other books on phytotherapy), with whom I studied back in Maryland some time ago. His #1 recommendation for strengthening the immune system is three doses of echinacea (purple cone flower) per day every day for three weeks, then one week off, then repeat the cycle. Your body needs the week off to respond to the effects of the echinachea. That's how it builds your immune system -- or rather, how it helps you build your own! :)
It sounds as if a good talk therapist could help both of you find your way through this, if you can find one skilled in holistic care (clued in about nutrition's impact on physical and mental health), PTSD and so on. You might like to check out some excellent CDs by Belleruth Naparstek. You can read up on her online. Amazing woman, amazing CDs, one of which ("Sleep") was what helped me get over a long period of insomnia.

Posted - Feb 07 2012 : 5:26:42 PM If he has an autoimmune type illness, you'll definitely want to take care not to put it in further overdrive. Some herbs that do support a compromised immune system will put an already overactive immune system in a serious state of bouncing off the walls so to speak and cause more damage. Look more towards balancing the immune system response, supporting the digestive system and adrenal glands (and don't forget the thyroid as part of the adrenals!!)

Posted - Feb 05 2012 : 9:01:34 PM My husband's name is Michael, his grandfather Lorin was raised there, but I'm not exactly sure how the family line breaks out. It's so beautiful there. I always wished we could have moved up that way.
