Please check this link for the story of Monsanto buying into the home seed business and selling seeds to places like Burpee and Johnnys seeds.

I don't like genetically altered seeds, do you?

I just found this interesting article on the Burpee website. The owner of Burpee says they are not owned by Monsanto. Evidently the Burpee seeds are sold in the Seminis catalog and Monsanto owns Seminis. I find all of this extremely complicated and confusing. One has to be a detective these days to protect our health and our livelihood as farmers. Below is the link to the Burpee website:

http://www.burpee.com/gygg/content.jsp?contentId=about-burpee-seeds

Yesterday I bought several packs of organic Burpee seeds at Target. I got a little worried when I read some of the posts about Monsanto owning Burpee. I also bought organic seeds at Whole Foods, these from High Mowing Organic Seeds in Vermont.

krystle, the chemical co.s now have the right to purchase plants and trees and own them. if you grow them with out approval you can be arrested and fined yes even if it is wind driven. you can go to Farmer to consumer legal defense fund. they talk about what is going on. they also supply legal help to those in need. i hope you have happy days in your garden. sherrye

Wow, the domination continues! I can't believe they are actually selling seeds now! Does that mean if you try saving the seeds from the plants you grow from monsanto seeds they can come and sue you for 'stealing'?! I mean they are already sueing farmers for "stealing" when in fact its just cross contamination from winds and pollination like what Karen said. I haven't ordered my seeds yet but I'm sticking with seed savers for sure! I thought about trying some from Burpee so I'm glad I read this because I will just stick with what I know and I know seed savers are good people :) thanks for sharing!

Last month, farmers were in New York City, fighting Monsanto. I believe most of these farmers are from the western part of the United States. Monsanto's GMO plants have contaminated neighboring organic and traditional farms. Those farmers want no part of GMOs, but wind drift, bees, etc. are carrying GMOs to their plants. Monsanto has actually sued some of those farmers for stealing their GMOs. They trespass onto the farmer's property, take plants and test them for evidence of GMOs. Then, they take them to court for stealing GMOs. One farmer fought back and won, but there was no promise that it wouldn't happen again. When the farmers went before the NY judge, she said she would give her verdict at a later date. Last week I was informed that the judge ruled in favor of Monsanto. This means that the farmers' crops will continue to be contaminated with GMOs. I see this spreading throught the United States. I always by organic and/or heirloom seeds, never hybrid. Hybrid seeds/plants will not reproduce, so there's no saving seeds. And, if you plant hybrids along with organics and heirlooms or if your neighbor plants them, it can affect the organic and heirloom plants. When I shop in the grocery store, I always check the labels and try not to buy anything that contains GMOs. If the product is organic, then it doesn't have GMOs. There's a list of non-GMO companies on the internet. The US government does not require GMO labeling, as they do in most of the European countries. This is a situation that all of us farm girls need to keep an eye on. We need to select our seeds and plants carefully.

i want to vote seedsavers. they are trying to fight back. their goal is to save seed from monsanto etc. i feel we make a statement and help change this by supporting them. they have been saving seeds for years now. we used to have over 10,000 varieties to apple. now less than 300. they are also helping save white park cattle. they are so helpful. if you sign up you have access to all members seeds. thousands of varieties. you get a book with all the growers in it. then you can buy from them or exchange seeds. we have been using them for years now. also you can join to be a member that helps grow seeds for them. they need folks through out the world to help grow. just a thought happy growing sherrye

Some other good seed companies are Fedco, High Mowing seeds, Baker Creek and we like seedsavers as well.

This really ticked me off! And I just ordered my seeds last week from Parks. I don't think I ordered any of the varieties on the list though I will have to double check. This year is too late, NEXT year I'm only ordering organic or from a trusted source.

Wow-
I never would have thought! Thanks for the eye opener. Amazing how its "legal" to outright deceive people! Where does it end?
I will be sure and purchase wisely!

Hey Farmgirls,

Read the article. This seemed really scary to me so I just phoned Burpee myself, as I recently bought all my seeds from Lowes, buying all seeds marked organic, but they are under the Burpee label. If they are not truly organic I want to know! The rep from Burpee says that the Organic seeds have nothing to do with Monsanto and that they are indeed organic. I have a friend who says she won't buy organic seeds because of the price. But if we all buy the organic ones, we are sending a strong message. By the way, the seeds I bought were $1.88 a packet, which doesn't seem bad to me at all, when the non-organics ran around $1.59.
