Hi girls -

Will you please help by sharing your favorite recipes using ground pork? We recently shared half a pig with our neighbors and have a whole lot of ground pork in the freezer. I've never really used ground pork before, and neither have our neighbors but we're eager to try. (Go ahead and laugh - we get the irony and totally deserve it! LOL!) Whatever you like - please, please just share! Thanks so much!

Hugs -

Oh! GIRLS! This is awesome! (I knew I could count on you, Sharon! LOL!) Thank you!!!

I actually make French (Canadian French, that is) Meat Pie all the time in the winter, but have never used ground pork in it as my grandfather's recipe calls for (have only used ground beef!) because I never buy ground pork! I will definitely do that, Sharon - and I'll try your recipe, too, for sure! Thank you!

Thanks for the tips, Erin! I'm definitely going to try them! Believe it or not, I'm making lasagne today, so I will definitely try it with pork... or maybe half beef, half pork... we'll see! Thank you!

Michele - that sounds yummy! I think hte only ingredient I'll need is the hoisin sauce, but I'll just pick it up at the grocery store this week. I can't wait to try your recipe! Thank you!!!

Lanna - I actually did make meatballs and meatloaf with 2/3 beef and 1/3 pork mixture - they came out AWESOME!!! Diane - you were so right! The flavor was even better - delicious!

I still have a ton of ground pork in the freezer (or so it seems), but I am very excited to try these recipes and ideas. Please keep them coming! YAY! I would really like to have some great recipes for canning meals made with ground pork, too, if anyone has them!

Thanks so much, again! You girls ROCK!

Our butcher just made me a bunch of sausage with all the ground pork. My kids *adore* sausage for breakfast, so I roll with it. I've heard using ground pork *and* beef in meatballs or meatloaf can make it yummier as well, but I haven't actually put that to the test yet.

Similar to what you get in a Chinese restaurant:

Ground Pork and Green Beans

3/4 lb lean ground pork
1 teaspoon cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1 teaspoon oil
2 1/2 cups green beans
2 cloves minced fresh garlic
2 tablespoons hoisin sauce
1 teaspoon sugar
1 teaspoon crushed red pepper
2 teaspoons low-sodium soy sauce

Combine the first 4 ingredients in a bowl. Heat oil in a nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add pork mixture, beans, and garlic. Cook until pork loses its pink color and is crumbled. Combine hoisin, sugar, red pepper and soy sauce in a small bowl, stirring with a whisk; then add this mixture to pan. Cook 2 minutes or until thoroughly heated, stirring frequently. Serve over rice if desired.

Okay I don't really have a recipe but I like to fry it up with McCormack's Italian seasoning (or whatever brand) and add it to lasagna instead of ground beef, we actually had that last night. Tonight was chili with ground pork instead of beef again. We also use our ground pork in tacos.

Hey Nini :)

Here is a tasty recipe that I like to make. Don't laugh I got it from a Seventeen magazine ages ago (yes, when I was 17, so you know it's old ;))

Tourtiere (Canadian Meat Pie)

Meat filling
Pastry for double crust pie

Meat Filling:

2 Tbsp. Butter
2 cups chopped Onion
1 1/2 ground pork (or beef)
1 can (1 lb.) whole Tomatoes
1/2 cup chopped Celery Leaves
1 Tbsp. minced Garlic
1 tsp. Salt
1/2 tsp. whole Thyme
1/4 tsp each of ground Nutmeg, Mace, Cloves, and Black Pepper
2 tsp.s cornstarch
1 cube chicken bouillon, dissolved in 1/2 cup boiling water
1/4 chopped parsley

Meat filling:

Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add chopped onion, and saute until soft and golden. Add ground pork, break it up with a fork. Cook until meat is brown and no trace of pink remains. Add tomatoes (breaking them up with a fork), celery leaves, garlic, salt, thyme, nutmeg, mace, cloves, and pepper.
Reduce heat, and simmer uncovered for 30 minutes until most of the moisture has evaporated and the mixture is quite dry. Drain off any excess fat. Dissolve cornstarch in chicken bouillon mixture. Stir into meat mixture, then cook until mixture comes to a boil and thickens (about 2 minutes). Add parsley. Remove meat filling from heat and let it cool while you prepare the pastry crust.

Roll out dough and place in pie dish, fill with meat filling. Place second crust on top, decorate if you like :) Brush with an egg wash and place in a 425 degree oven for 15 minutes. reduce heat to 350 degrees and bake 40 minutes until crust is golden brown.

The following link is for a more traditional Meat Pie like my mom used to make (except she used beef instead of pork)

I recently made individual meat loaves in a muffin tin with ground pork that was mixed with some ground elk from a hunter friend of ours. WOW was it good! Use your favorite recipe, and combine your ground pork with any other ground meat. The pork will add richness, moisture, and a nice depth of flavor to whatever you choose.

Thank you, girls!

Phyllis, I am SO not a fan of ground turkey - it always has a funny taste to me... BUT maybe by mixing it with pork it will be better. I'm definitely willing to give it a try! :)

I am definitely going to make your sausage, Diane! Do you happen to know what I need to add for hot Italian sausage? I've got both crushed red pepper and powder, but I'm not sure which is better nor the quantity to use. It's so funny because this morning I took out a couple of pounds of ground pork to mix in with ground beef for meatballs and meatloaves. I wasn't sure if it would be good or not, but if you say it is - I am SURE it will be! YAY!

Thanks so much again!

Nini,
We make sausage out of our ground pork. My favorite is Italian Sausage, here is the recipe:
To every 1 lb. of ground pork add 1/2 TBL course salt, 1/4 TBL ground black pepper, 1/4 TBL fennel seeds and 1/2 TBL chopped parsley. Mix well and let stand in refrigertor overnight to blend
spices. This sausage can be stuffed into casings but I like to use it in lasagna and other Italian dishes. Makes great pizza sausage too!

Another purpose for ground pork is to mix it half and half with ground beef for meatloaf. I have also made breakfast sausage patties from ground pork. Just Google breakfast sausage recipes.

I am trying to be the person my dogs think I am.

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

We actually mix it with ground turkey and make porkey burgers. It's a cheap substitute for hamburger, and you have to fry out the fat, but it's very good.
