I have just a couple questions for you cloth diapering farmgirl mommies out there. For both my son (now potty trained) and baby girl I have used cloth diapers with Thirsties brand diaper covers. They work great and I have no complaints, but I recently discovered wool diaper covers. I purchased a couple of Disana covers and I am using those at night time for my baby girl, but I am really interested in knitting some of my own as she gets bigger. I even downloaded some free patterns on ravelry, in anticipation of the day that I have time (and free hands) to knit again.
So I am basically looking for any tips or advice from anyone who has used wool covers or made your own. How do you use and care for them? What has your experience been? Thanks!

Jessica

I love my wool covers. I buy a lot used from some of the wool swap groups on Facebook. You can get flats from greenmountaindiapers.com that are large enough for big babies too

I buy a lot of second hand. Amazon has the brand I use most though for 2 to 3 dollars per a diaper, ozocozy better fits is what I like. Flats can just be flour sack towels. Woolies can be made with second hand 100 percent wool sweaters, using the arms and waist band.

I used gdiapers, and I bought them on ebay. I stripped the inserts, and I also just bought fabric on amazon and made my own inserts. I think it was micro fleece and hemp? I can't remember. Even getting things second hand and making some of them myself was expensive though. I have no doubt that it saved us money in the long run, but wasn't cheap up front.

Well I'm making my own cloth diapers and covers, much more cost effective than buying the pre-mades at $22 per diaper (that's right $22.00 for one). I also can't justify the cost of paper diapering both on the environment and the pocket book.

Can't even find just flat diapers that you fold yourself anymore. I should have saved what I had from my last baby 4 years ago, however didn't and am very pregnant with no. 5.

Like catherine, I cloth diapered my oldest two boys (now 36 and 34) using regular flat birdseye diapers and pins with plastic pants. So much has changed for the better! I have used wool covers for foster kids and liked them. The tips above were great.

Inside me there is a skinny girl crying to get out, but I can usually shut her up with cookies.

@Heather....That would make sense about the wool covers...wool existed looonnnnggg before plastic. (*duh, feeling silly*) Back then, we didn't have a computer or internet, so I didn't do a lot of researching that is available to the gals today. Not to mention an awesome forum like this!!!!

well wool covers have been around before the plastic actually. But, when plastic came around many bought them. But, I actually have a girl friend that used wool covers 30 years ago, and my grandma used wool covers 60 plus years ago. They don't have to be washed as often as plastic and are more breathable etc.

I used cloth diapers over 20 years ago and all we had were the plastic pull up covers. So, I have no advice. ha ha

But, I am totally jealous of all the cute products and accessories available today.

you will want to lanolize them, wash them in a small bucket of water and lanolin (I like the scented kind, like cj butters, especially the melon scent), swish around, and let soak like over night. then I squeeze out and dry on a rack till dry.
