I'm thinking of getting an embroidery sewing machine. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience with them?

Juanita, if you bought your machine from a Bernina dealer, they do offer free classes. You might want to take advantage of that. The 830 is a top of the line machine, call your dealer and let them know that you are having difficulties. They should be helpful. Good luck!

I have an old bernina (artista 180 with the embroidery module) and use the Bernina Designer Plus software. I design on my computer and use my old bernina as a printer/stitcher. No sense for me to upgrade to a newer machine with the software.

I think so, Kat. I'll look up the number when I go out to my sewing house. I can download designs and I purchased, but haven't used much, a converter box that I can download any format design and convert it to my PES format. It comes with a re-loadable card to use in my machine. It was something I HAD to have at the time, but have only practiced with it. I'm hoping that if I ever decide to get at least a 5x7 machine I can use it for that.

My husband thought I needed an embroidery machine. (I love to hand embroider) About 5 years ago he bought me a Bernina...a fancy schmancy embroidery/quilting machine. We lived in a tiny town in Texas at the time and I had to drive an hour each way to take the classes. UGH! I've been hand sewing almost all my life and love my Husquevarna (non embroidery). One Christmas I forced myself to put some fancy embroidery on Crazy Quilt Vests for granddaughters and on the pajamas I made for kidlets. I just can't make myself love it. I guess I should set my mind in learning mode. I have it set up on one end of my sewing table, but I still use the Husquevarna the most.

I have both a Bernina Deco 650 and it is old school... I have to buy "cards" and it only does 4x4 patterns.. but it stitches beautifully.... I also have a Brother PE500 which also is only a 4x4 hoop size... but I can down load patterns off the internet... and there are several companies that give free patterns monthl
I don't use mine as much as I should.. mostly for monograming...
I would like to upgrade to a 5x7 hoop... but for what little embroidery work I do... I am good with my machines.
I did take a class through Joanns Fabric.. on a high end Hasquvarna (sp)... and got very frusrated with the machine.....and so I enjoy my simple easy peasy cheapo machine....

Judy,

Perhaps you can plan a road trip and check out the machines you are interested in. Often, at sewing & quilting shows machine dealers are present and you can ask questions, test them out. They will often have a "show special".

Don't overlook used machines. You can get a top of the line used machine for a good price.

Yes, Beverley, I agree that a 5x7 hoop is the least you should get. I like my Brother machine, but it is a low-end model and only makes the smaller 4" size and there is a lot I cannot do with the designs.

Brothers software is the most user friendly I have found. Viking is the hardest. I sold my viking and my bernina cause I did not like the software but I have had my brother for about 15 years and have found it to be very easy to use and the software is great. Get one with at least a 5x7 inch hoop or you will want to upgrade very fast. they now have ones with 10x 6 or 7 I forget. so you want a fairly big hoop size so you can use all the new designs coming out for bigger hoops. Just MHO.

Thanks for all the good advice! Carol the problem I have with trying out various machines is there doesn't seem to be very many options in my area.

Judy,

I would suggest that you look at what you think you will need in a machine (whether you are planning to use is as a source of income etc). Then, go and test them out; see what would work for you. Don't over look used machines. I know with high end brand, you can get a high end machine for a good deal! Buy the best machine for your budget!

I'm a Bernina user, love the brand! I have an older embroidery machine (an Artista 180) but I seldom use it. When I do, I use digitizing software to work the design and feed it to the machine, which becomes like a printer. With the software, I do not feel the need to part with my archaic machine! lol

Good luck! Cheers!

I bought a Husquevarna Viking embroidery machine. I like it but I don't love it. A couple more of my friends bought the same type machine. One had to have the mother board replaced and has had more problems since then. Now, I know there will be lemons but I also know of more that had to have the motherboards replaced since then. So, be careful. Do your homework.

Vikings are good! I had a Viking/Husky I bought used and I used the heck out of it. Eventually the shop told me I had pretty well burnt it up. So my husband bought me a Brother PR650. It is a 6 needle machine and a bear! lol! But not having to change thread IS nice!

When my dh retired he bought me a Viking sewing machine which can be sewing or embroidery. I like it a lot. But if you do a lot of embroidery, the large designs take up a lot of time. If you need the machine for sewing you may have to wait for it to finish embroidering.Good luck in your choice.
