Hey there,
I'm curious if any of you cut your own hair ... especially if you have really short hair, such as a pixie style. Do you have any particular scissors, etc. you like to use? Any tips?

I'm just getting weary of spending so much money at a salon and most of the time the cut is not a really good one. I've cut my own more than once and it actually looks pretty good. I guess if a salon cut is gonna look like a "whack job" then I could probably do better for free!

I cut my own hair now for several years. It was so long that I was sitting on it a month or so ago. I now have to the middle of my back now. Cut about two feet off. Got tired years ago of getting haircuts only next appointment, it was never quite right and I would end up making cutting it myself to get it even.

I used to cut my own hair all the time as a teenager, and everyone loved it. As an adult, I have had my share of bad cuts! I am with Judith. I have long hair but cut my own bangs. Sometimes I do a better jobs than the hairdresser!

Hi Eliza
I have long hair but I cut my bangs. Actually, I just nibble away at them with the nail scissors. It works ok, sometimes looks better than other times. Saves $20 each time.

CJ, just do it!!!
I used to cut my hair, because it was short.
I remember thinking I was the only one until one day at school I commented on how cute the librarians hair cut was. She stopped, looked at me and told me she cut it herself! Then she said she had always cut her hair. With short, cut around the ears hair, I always just nip it here and there, until after a few days it is just fine.

Ceejay- it wasn't the best haircut that I've had, but it worked well enough. The best part was going to the salon for my next cut and telling the gals that I'd let my dad cut my hair with our vacuum. They about died laughing :D

Awww... Nancy!!! Awwww!!!!

Hey girls - I thought of you a couple of weeks ago when I was chopping off my locks... I came across this youtube video, and figured, heck, what have I got to lose:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FLqRMH5nlcA

It really, really, really, really, REALLY works! This was the best selfie-cut I've ever given to myself! I just suggest if you're going to do it, when you measure from the ponytail holder up to where you want to cut, DEFINTELY add an extra inch or two. Otherwise you might cut those front layers a little too short. Other than that, I did it, and it worked perfectly - layers and all! HIGHLY recommended!

I used to cut my own hair when the mullet was in style. Thought I did a pretty ok job until one day Hubby said, "Honey, we're not that poor, please go to a salon".

How old would you be if you didn't know old you are?

I cut my own hair. I have long, nearly waist length. I got tired of being charged an extra $10 - $15 for having long hair when repeatedly it took longer for the stylist to do someone with really short hair than it did mine. I think it's robbery to pay $45 and above for someone to shampoo, condition, clip my ends and blow dry my hair. I watched a ton of youtube videos on how to do it.

I do! I do! CJ - I cannot tell you how many times I have paid someone to cut my hair, only to have to come home and "fix" what they did. The stress and expense is just not worth it. My hair looks way better when I do it than when I go to a salon - and I've even done a few different styles over the years. My grandfather was a barber, and he blessed me with a sacred pair of his personal shears - I treasure them to this day! I actually learned how to cut my own hair back in the late 70's from an article in Seventeen magazine! I can still see the pictures in my mind! LOL! I am sure, sure, sure that there are tutorials you can check out on YouTube, and there are also books with step-by-step picture directions. Trust yourself, and go for it! And if you make a mistake, just work with it. Trust me, you hair will grow back in no time! Hugs and love - Nini

The Flowbee . . . I remember that from years ago, used by a friend who had great haircuts. But I couldn't remember what it was called.
Rachel, how did that Flowbee haircut turn out?

I don't, but I did let my dad cut mine with a flowbee once.

When I had it longer I'd trim mine myself because it was long enough to see the split ends. It's about chin-length now though so doesn't really work.

Sounds like we're all doing our own thing! I have cut my hubby's hair for all the 48 years we've been married. Used to cut my kids until my daughter grew up and did her own thing and my son lives with a caregiver (he's developmentally disabled) who takes him get haircuts.
So, I have barber scissors which I use on mine. My hair used to be totally straight but as I've gotten older and with more "arctic blonde" the texture has changed and it's got more body and a bit of wave. I used to get perms and then started giving myself perms but stopped those 5 years ago. Gradually started cutting it chorter and shorter and like it pixie style because it's easy to do . . . except for the fact you have to cut it more often. I used to go to Great Clips where there were a couple hairdressers (one was a guy) who did a decent job, but the salon went out of business and every place else is so expensive. So, I'll probably continue to cut my own . . . until and unless I decide to get a salon cut for a change..
Thanks for sharing!

I have cut my own hair for many years. Seems that when I got I cut somewhere, it was never right in one spot or another. I think I do a better job at layering it myself. I bought a cheap pair of hair scissors and only use them for that, and have had them for many years now.

Forgot tp mention--I use a pair of embroidery scissors to trim my bangs. Gives me much more control than larger scissors.

CeeJay I have been cutting my hair for the last five years. Before that I went every week to a salon and she cut it once a month. When I moved to another town I decided I didn't want to break in a new hair and nail person. Saved me a bunch of $$$ too.

It has helped that over the last five years my hair has changed. All my life it was fine and straight - now it's still fine but has started to have a little wave and curl. Go figure.

I cut my bangs just above the brows. Keep top where it is thinning short so it will not lay flat. Cut sides a little above ear lobes and wave sides to the back. Cut rest of hair just above collar - all one length. I cut it once a month. Because I still have some dark mixed the grey and it waves & curls little mistakes are not easily seen. I haven't messed up yet but every time I start cutting I get a funny feeling in the pit of my stomach.

After shampooing I let my hair air dry all the while mussing it with my hands to do what I want it to. In some places I may use a lift. When dry spray with Aussie hair spray which allows me to work with hair a little if needed. That's my hair routine - no comb or brush. I do get compliments on my hair so I must be doing something right.

I have been using regular scissors but I do want a pair of professional salon scissors. There's a Sally's Beauty Supply Shop here so it's just the matter of me dong it.

I have been trimming my bangs for years cause no one could do it right--my brother taught himself to cut his own hair using a three way mirror on a table in front of him, and a regular mirror on a table in back. he sat between the two tables. this was back in the 70's, when all guys went to barber shops. He got a bad haircut there once and never went back again. he also bought a book "How to cut hair--your own or anyone else's". I say go for it! You know what you like better than anyone else.
