How old do you feel is too old for trick or treating? My daughter is 14 and some of the kids her age still go, especially to our town's Main Street (where thousands of people go, it's an event). I remember wanting to t or t at her age and one lady yelling at us that we were too old.

What's your opinion? They are freshmen in ninth grade.

I work at a grade school and would like to address the aftermath of Halloween treats. Yesterday, the kids were just off the wall in the school. I saw many teachers struggling to keep them safe and in control. Kids brought candy to school and were eating it in the bathrooms and throwing the wrappers around. A good friend of mine who is a teacher said that the second day after Halloween is the worst because the kids are in sugar withdrawal. I rather wish I could have not been there.

Nicole, I had several groups of older kids , both girls and guys, that looked like about the same age as your daughter. They were dressed in fun costumes, polite, and having a great time in our neighborhood. Personally, as long as kids are polite and respectful, they can come to my home and Trick or Treat as long as they like. Age matters not to me. I love Halloween and when you are just having fun dressing up and going out with your friends, I see no harm at all. There is always a ton of candy everywhere and I think it makes for a nice event that kids of all ages can participate in. Because older kids want to be without parents, I would insist on restrictions of them only going to safe places and a definite return home time. My own girls loved to Trick or Treat in the neighborhoods where they lived up until they were 16. After that they decided they were too old but it was a decision they made themselves. A plastic pumpkin full of wonderful candy is a huge magnet for teenagers!! LOL!!!

Well, I guess Newtown is different. We were invited with friends to go to our Main Street. People come from all over, and there are teenagers that are seniors trick or treating. It's a town wide event. All the adults dress up too. It's hard to describe, but all my daughter's friends and their parents were there. We had a blast. Thousands of people attend. It's funny - in Texas where I grew up it would be horrifying. Here, everyone thinks you miss out if you don't go. I am glad we went. It was something like out of a movie.

She did not go door to door in our neighborhood - that I feel she is too old for, though she was invited to go with the neighbor's kids, it was too late when we got back.

Guess it depends on where you live. ???

Definitely before they reach High School. It's ridiculous if you think about it. Who would want to let their kids go door to door in this day and age?

Nicole my son at that age had given up t & t for football. All he was interested in. As far as I am concerned there's a big difference in door to door t & t and doing the main drag through town. Let her do it this year and next year will take care of itself.

In the small town (2200 pop.) where I lived when my DS was in high school the big thing was water balloons on Halloween. As he put it to me it was a tradition. The kids loaded into pick-up trucks, rode through town, and threw balloons at each other. The local police met with the kids and laid out the rules. No throwing water balloons at car windshields or people not playing the game. The policeman than asked for a water balloon so he could throw it at another policeman. As far as know there was never any troubled and the kids went by the rules. And like DS said it was a tradition.
