Civics Challenge
Beginning
1. What is the Supreme law of the land? U. S. Constitution and any federal law and treaties based upon it. The Constitution and federal law is upheld before the state law.
2. What does the Constitution do? The Constitution defines the government, describes how its organized and how the people who make it up are to be chosen and specifies what powers the government can and cannot do.
3. The idea of self-government is in the first three words. What are they? We the People
4. What do we call the first 10 Amendments of the Constitution? Bill of Rights
5. Name two rights and two freedoms listed in the First Amendments? The right to bear arms and the right to a trial by jury, freedom of speech and freedom of religion
6. What did the Declaration of Independence do? Declared the 13 colonies to be independent states from English rule
7. Name two rights in the Declaration of Independence? Life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness
8. What is the economic system in the United States? Capitalism. The businessman privately owns the means of production. Free market competition dictates price and production levels. Prices and salaries are determined by supply and demand.
9. What is the “rule of law”? Requires the government to exercise its powers in accordance with well-established rules, regulations, and legal principles. A distinction is something drawn between power, will and force on one hand and law on the other.
Intermediate
1. Name the three branches of the government. Executive, Judicial and Legislative
What keeps one branch of government from becoming too powerful? A system of checks and balances. Congress makes laws, the president has veto powers and judicial branch can rule on laws.
2. Who is in charge of the executive branch? The President
3. Who makes the laws? Congress makes the laws; the president signs them into law
4. What are the two branches of the U S Congress? The Senate and The House of Representatives
5. How many Senators are there? 100 Name one of your Senators and one member of the House of Representatives. Senator Tim Kane; Bob Goodlatte
6. What is the term of the U S President? 4 yrs.; What is the term of a U S Senator? 6 yrs. What is the term of a U S Representative? 2 yrs.
7. Who is the Commander-in-Chief of the U S Military? The President
8. Who signs bills to become laws? The President

Expert
1. Who vetoes bills? The President
2. What does the judicial branch do? Rules on laws
3. What is the highest court in the U S? the Supreme Court
4. How many justices are on the Supreme Court? 9 ; Who is the Chief Justice of the U S now? John Roberts
5. Under the Constitution, some powers belong solely to the federal government. Print money and run and fund the postal service
6. Under the Constitution, some powers belong solely to the state government. Regulate intrastate commence and provide for public health and welfare.
7. What is the capitol of your state? Richmond ; Who is the governor of your state now? Ralph Northam
8. What are the two major parties: Republican and Democratic
9. What is the name of the Speaker of the House now? John Boehner
