It's that time,, cutting and berming the fresh cut hay.. They started yesterday,, I sat out back last nite, enjoying the cool breeze and smell of fresh cut hay. Ahh, heaven...
I will sit out again tonite and enjoy some more fresh cut hay smell...
14ac of Bliss & loving it!

Charlie & his son,, were our neighbors from when we had our other lil ranchette 4 years ago..(just less then a mile down the road).

I'll post pics once they finish bailing in a few days.
Thank goodness for Charlie, and his old but still working hard equipment. Farm neighbors are the best!

Lovely haying pictures Michele. Most people in our area use the round balers now. I like the small bales to buy and it is rather hard to find them anymore. Anyway we all agree that hay smells really good. I love to go sit in our hay loft sometimes.

I love the smell of the stored hay barn when it has just been re-filled from the field. Hay making is really an iconic summer event because so much depends on it's success come late January-March when the snows and frigid weather drone onward.

Michele,, Some of the farms out here bale up 2 different size round bales,,(mostly for the cattle up here)..
We have reg bales,, but some folks cut/bale long bales,, that as you know are back breaking heavy!
We use to have a Kabota tractor,, (sold it with the house).. hubby want's to buy another one (next Spring)... for use around the property,, and we'll continue to hire out the cutting and bailing.
We have to wait till after the 4th of July to cut, cuz we still have some coastal rain showers...
We'll get the rest of the bales in the hay barn...one of our neighbors offered to let us use his hay elevator,, but we don't want to stack that high, and the hay barn is long,,, but we need to go get some more pallates to put the rest of the hay on.
Ah, the fun never ends! lol!

It is a good feeling having the hay made and in the barn before the next rain. We finished up right after the fourth of july. We round bale most of ours and 2 of my boys came and helped get 2 loads of squares in the barn for me. I baled 126 round bales so far this year. Second crop hopefully to come. Fun to be using that old equipment too. We rake with a 1974 ford 4000, but i cut and bale with my john deere 6410. I do like that air conditioning.
Being the driver is an important job girls! It goes much faster with help! The smell of fresh hay is the best!

Charlie,, who cut and baled our hay,, loves vintage farm equipment,, and has a barn full of restored tractors that all still work..

Yes,, the smell of fresh cut hay is awesome.
There was a time I could & would be out side by side with DH,, but I have osteo-arthritest in my left wrist,,, that I would have to live on Motin for days.. but I can drive the truck and trailer while hubby throws the bales on the trailer. Job security! lol!

Well, in spite of the heat, DH was up and out early this a.m., to pick-up the bales and put them in the hay barn,, just 44 bales left out in the field,, tomorrow is another day.

I love to watch haying in progress too---I can hear the sound of that baler. Always loved to WATCH haying since I was a child. For several years my husband and I helped our friend work in the hay fields. That is when I discovered how hot and itchy the work really is. I can't lift a bale so I would get to drive the hay truck---great fun. We still have to get about 100 bales of hay and throw it up in the barn lofts. Always glad when the hay is bought and stored for winter. Nothing smells as good as fresh hay.
