Has anyone made their own candles? I have plans to make some for my neighbors and I finally have all the stuff I need. My question is, do the candles need lids? Or are they okay without them? Will it lose its scent if it's left without a lid?

I guess we just can't compare ours to the store bought ones. Ours don't have as many chemicals, so of course the will have the natural flaws. I'm just going to have the recipients give me honest feedback so I know what to change the next time around!

It seems like it is just the nature of the beast to sink a little in the middle. I used paraffin for my candles; I don't think soy wax was invented at the time.

Judith, my wax sunk a little in the middle as well. I dont believe they did. It probably took a half hour before it was changing to solid. How long should it cool. I used a soy wax.

Grace, I love the teacup repurpose idea. I always have a ton of those little leftovers. I had a bunch that I just threw out with moving. I wish I would have saved them and made a new candle. Now I will do that with my next ones. I still havent had a chance to try burning my candle. I will hopefully soon.

Is there really a specific time/temperature in which you need to add the essential oils? I read if you add it at the wrong time the smell wont work.

Krista,, I have in the past made soy wax candles, I put the wick in, then I would pour about 1/2 the soy in, let sit a minuteand then pour the rest in.. and even then, it still sank a wee bit in the center.
Not sure why.

I also (and still do) save the bits of remaining wax in my store bought candles, and re-melt them into a new (old ) tea cups with new wicks.. and Voila' instant cute gift.
Krista,, you can re-purpose sweet old tea cups into candles cups... makes great gifts. I buy my wicks at Michaels Crafts store.

I've had the wax sink a little in the center but never had cracks. Did they cool rapidly? What kind of wax did you use? I don't think it will affect them in the long run; they should burn just fine.

Alright ladies. I completed my candles and now that they are cooled they are cracked. Is that normal? Or did I do something wrong? I believe they will still burn the same.

Grace, that's a good idea! I could pick out a really cut Christmas fabric and tie it with some twine! Thank you Grace for the idea.

Krista... if you are making and giving them as gifts... you could cut out a circle of cute fabric and tie the fabric to the jar top with twine or satin ribbon just for the added touch of sweetness.
(Like the fabric tops/covers that you see on canning jars.

Wonderful. Thank you guys. I was hoping I wouldn't have to get lids!

I haven't made candles for a long time, but I never used lids.

There is never a road so long that there isn't a curve in it.

I jused to make candles. We never had lids on them; I think that is something new. The scent is in the wax, so it stays.
