SO, the Sunday before Christmas, our sweet little orange tabby suddenly became sick. We headed to the vet on Monday. He had a severe UTI. This is dangerous, because left untreated cats can die within 48 to 72 hours. Luckily, they don’t think it had gotten so bad to have chrystals, which would lead to surgery. However, it has been a rough week or so with him. We even had to talk to the vet on the phone CHristmas Day! Three medications and now special food for a month, and he is starting to see like himself. The vet thinks with the cold snap he didn’t drink enough. Also, dry food can cause a build up and they get these things. He has one more day of medicine. Hopefully he won’t have any more issues. He is a young kitty; this is more common in older cats. Has anyone else had a problem with a kitty with this?

I think he is on the mend, now, thankfully.

Nicole

Thank you farmgirls! I talked to an old friend today who is also a vet, and she says not to feed dry food to kitties, as it contributes to the problem. I did not know that before.

So glad your sweet kitty is better, I have had so many bad cats---but right now we have the best cats we have ever had---and the funny part is three of them just wandered in from out neighbors a mile up the hill. Unwanted cats---but the sweetest things we have ever known---and thank the LORD those people moved last fall---we are too old to help anymore animals that need homes.

Hi Girls,

He is doing much better, thank you. He is not happy with his new diet, but he is only on it for a month. It’s good to see his sweet little personality back.

When we adopted him, the shelter told us he was as “sweet as a golden retriever puppy”. SO sweet a kitty, but mischievous!

Thank you for the prayers.

Nicole, I haven't owned a cat before so I am no help. I just wanted to say I'm sorry your poor guy is sick and I hope he gets feeling better soon and won't have to get a UTI again. Sending your kitty some loves!

Poor Kitty, hope he is better soon.
Not the same exact subject but my shu shu had bad eye discharge. I started feeding him a home made chicken and rice with veggies recipe and his eyes cleared up great. He used to be a picky eater with dry store bought food. That has also changed. His Hinneyness barks his demands now around 4pm everyday.

Yep - this is my second male cat in 25 years. THe last one had the surgery, but then lived to age 22. Norman is on a diet right now, and he is NOT happy at all about it.

Yes! I had a beautiful tom cat with this problem---and he had to eat canned cat food for years. But of the very. very many cats I have owned---only one got this. My vet said neutered males are more likely to get it.

NIcole, I have had two male cats with this exact problem. The first kitty was in the 1970s and after repeated infections, they did a little surgical procedure that fixed him up for a long life of 14.4 years. My second kitty had two serious bouts with crystals , but the new Science diet and then the Purina Urinary formula fixed the problem without surgery. Both of those foods are prescription and only purchased at the vet, but they also have canned foods that come as options so you can mix both and make your kitty a happy boy and thrive in a healthy way. Good luck!
