Not much going on with my gardens right now but I am planning for 2020.

The International Herb of Year for 2020 is Rubus spp. Blackberries, raspberries, et al. Who knew they were herbs. There's not enough sunlight to go around in my garden so I will have to skip planting the Herb of the Year this year. Maybe next year there'll be a herb that fits into my small space.

Aidan... you can't go wrong with Herbs... and Geraniums... just protect them from the frost and below freezing temps.. the nice thing about 'flower pot' gardens.. if it the weather is going to get dicey,, just through down an old plastic shower curtain or plastic table cloth in a corner of your apartment and bring your potted plants in till it is safe to put them out again.
Don't forget,, plants in pots need more frequent watering, just don't over water...
Have fun.

Aidan, I live in northeast Texas and grow herbs in containers & raised beds. Most herbs should do great in your climate. As soon as onion sets show up at the fruit stand I'll buy a bunch or two to put in containers for green onions.

Hi Sisters! Long time no chat !!
I am hoping to start a porch garden in my tiny apartment. I was wondering if anyone knows of plants that do well in California in the fall/winter and are good for beginners (i think I have a brown thumb as the only thing I can keep alive are cacti)? It doesn't get. lower than 50 here in the winter.
Thanks for your help and gorgeous gardens everyone :)

Dawn, I'm right with you when it comes to putting this garden to bed and thinking about next year. I have trouble with squirrels too. Pecan and oak seedlings pop-up in my containers and all over the yard. They don't eat my herbs & flowers just dig and plant acorns & pecans.

The International Herb of the Year for 2021 is parsley so I'm putting the flat and curly leaf varieties on my plant to buy list. Will have to plant in containers to put on back deck because raised beds are full.

My containers are empty and my garden is cleared out. The majority of the leaves have come down thanks to the strong winds we've had here these past few weeks. I am already walking around my front and back gardens and thinking about 2021 plantings. I want to try to grow more tomato plants next year and I'm going to see how to best protect them from thieves. I live in a townhouse that backs up to a forest preserve, so squirrels are my biggest problem. The chipmunks do a number on my plantings as well. We have had some chilly weather off and on but this week it will be spring again before our winter weather moves back in, possibly for good. Time to write in my gardening journal again about how everything did in autumn. I keep a photo journal as well to refer to next spring to hopefully avoid mistakes made this year. I do that every year and as all gardeners know, we never get it quite perfect!

It's official.. my garden is cleared and cleaned out...
Today it got in the low 50's, but the sun was shining so I braved the great outdoors and worked in my garden..
My shoes are muddy, my nose is running, my hands and nails are dirty,, and I am happy....a little gardening doeth the soul good!

Well it is time that I need to clean out the my community garden plot for the Winter. My tomatoes did well this summer. The pepper plants did okay. Looking to start preparing for the 2021 growing year and see what I want to try and plant next year.

I agree raised beds are a blessing we would have a rock garden without them :D

We had a freeze as well. Everything is droopy. Time to clean out and wait for spring I suppose.
katmom Posted - Oct 16 2020 : 1:17:03 PM
Well we managed to dip down to 27' degrees the other night and my garden is no longer,, everything got frost burn and the poor cantaloups I had hoped would brown up,, split open.. and the last of my tomatoes and bell peppers are all damaged beyond salvaging.
I wasn't watching the temp repost for a few days,, got lazy so it is my fault for not picking and putting up in storage to finish ripening.
No I have no excuse.. guess I will just rake up, pull out and compost everything...
Bummer!
Hmm, maybe I will leave the garden gate open and let the deer mosey on in and nosh on what is left...

Sara, I do have one raised bed, an old stock tank. I had peppers in it this year and they did fabulous. My herbs are all in the ground though. I started cleaning out their bed. The grass can quickly take over. I did get the garlic planted yesterday. Sounds like Judy has a good life.

Michelle forgot to say I am so impressed with how you manage your farm. Spreading mature must be a "stinky" job but come next harvest you'll have a beautiful crop. I put well composted mature in my garlic beds. My sister has a mule and the mature I used was from last year's barn cleanout.

Judy the mule was a stray that showed up at Betty's farm almost ten years ago during a bad drought. No one claimed her so she stayed. When Betty sells the farm and moves to Paris her stepson who raises horses will take her.

Michelle I would have never gotten it done if I was planting in the ground. I don't bend like I used to. lol With the raised beds I stand upright and don't have to bendover. Best thing I ever did for myself to continue gardening was having the raised beds built.

Grace like you I leave the last blooms on my herbs for the bees and butterflies. Sad but true I haven't seen the bees since early summer and its been very few butterflies. I think it gets less and less each year.

My goodness Sara that is quite a planting of garlic. I will do 15-20 cloves maybe. Need to get them done now before it rains. Maybe this morning before we start on wood. Otherwise my big garden is been spread with fresh manure. Let it sit and rot down all winter. Grace hope you get your garden cleaned out. Nice for you to wait till the bees are done.

Michelle I'll be right with you planting garlic. I'm aiming for the first or second week of Oct. I wanted to replant MJF garlic because it did so good for me this year, but they are planting all they grew this year for next year harvest, so no selling for seed. I understand because garlic is a good cash crop. I will use garlic from Aldi and if it does good I'll save some for the next year.

Nice to use it fresh all year. I need to get out and harvest mine for the final time. And of course the bed needs a good weeding again. This morning we are getting rain. Weeding the flower/herb beds will be the last thing to do for the year. Oh and plant garlic. Can't forget that.

Weeded the creeping rosemary along both sides of sidewalk to front porch this morning. They are in full bloom with sweet lavender flowers. When they finish blooming I'll harvest some for rosemary vinegar. I don't dry rosemary because I use it fresh year round.

Hi Kathryn -- Welcome to MJF! First of all, purslane is edible, so you might want to give it a try and consider it part of your garden. Are your carrots growing yet? If you have nice healthy carrot greens showing I don't think the purslane will hurt anything. Carrot seed is tiny; we used to mix it with sand to plant it.

Hey ladies, I have a question about my root garden. I've never grown carrots, turnips or beets before and since I live in Northern California decided to give a late harvest a go. My question... my little root patch seems to be being taken over by perslane. I am wondering will the root veggies thrive past the ground cover or perish? To weed or not to weed? I see sprouts and things seem to be doing well where there is perslane but I'm worried I'll have problems. My step father is a cert. Permaculture guy and said weeding would be best but I know he hasn't grown carrots before (told me before I planted the seeds were too small) Please help, there is so much perslane lol and I dont think I could get it all without stepping on something. I planted at exactly the amount of space suggested lol, I got all mathematical on this part of my garden.

It's late August so it's time to cut back my grandmother's irises and clean the beds. Next will be tidying up the creeping rosemary plants along sidewalk to front porch.

Michelle like I said earlier I dried & made garlic powder out of all my garlic so will be buying more in the fall to plant. I've decided to go with more garlic in my 4 raised beds. I will leave the lemon thyme, lavender, chives, sage, Italian oregano, Syrian oregano (my favorite), Texas tarragon (Mexican marigold) where they are and plant garlic in the spaces left from herbs I took up.

Here in Texas I harvested my garlic in late June before it got so hot. Watering in the heat of our summers has become harder for me each year so I am cutting back on what I have to do. More garlic is the answer. I plant when it's cool and harvest before the heat is unbearable.

Dug my garlic tonight. Heads are a decent size. I tie them with twine and hang them to dry. We will use them as we need, and then next spring I will dry anything that is left over. Of course I save 15-20 cloves for planting in October.
sara you caterpillars must of ate their fill and left. Or they were dinner for some bird.
