Ladies-

Looking for any and all advice on farm clothing that will truly stand up to the chores AND is comfortable (and reasonable).

I've fallen in love with Duluth Trading clothes - particularly the NoGA pants/shorts and their bras (never been so comfortable - E V E R)

That said - these clothes are really expensive. At 50% off I might bite on something, but the regular sales and regular prices are a bit steep.

Any recommendations??

They recently built a 'Duluths' over at the far end of Spokane Valley.. My DH buys his metal detecting pants there,, lots of pockets and the knees are super strong!..

I haven't found anything,,, yet... that I am madly in love with,,, but then, I am partial to buying certain clothings at Tractor Surply over in Post Falls(ID)...

I work in the landscape industry so my work clothes need to perform and also remain decent in appearance. I much prefer Carhartt products for durability and getting your money's worth out of them. Dickie's is another good option - I like their jackets and coveralls when I'm working around the tractors.

I love Duluth's casual wear like the Noga pants, etc for comfort. I've had very good luck with their long-sleeve sun-protective shirts too. But I have found that their women's work clothing fabrics - especially the pants and cotton tees - hold odors, dirt, grease and grime something horrible so they quickly become so tacky looking that I can't wear them to work. I've tried every kind of stain remover, de-greaser and deodorizer under the sun....even products recommended by Duluth customer service.....and nothing works.....meanwhile the Carhartt items with the same dirt and grime come totally clean in the same load of laundry. I guess that makes me a Carhartt fan. I've never heard of Schmidt's so I'll have to check them out next time I got to TSC.

I agree with YellowRose.....you get what you pay for so go for the best quality you can afford up front.

Cheers! ~ Marilyn

Some forty years ago I came up with a way to justify spending more for my good clothes than my budget allowed. I depreciated the cost of item over several years. First year $$$ - Second year $$ - Third year $ - by the forth year the cost was practically nothing and the item was still good enough to wear to church. I rationalized that if I had bought an item that was less expensive but not as good quality over the years I had wasted my money.

I have the Duluth Trading Co. standard gardening work pants and they are very durable. I bought mine about 5 years ago and they still look like new. I bought a Medium (I wear size 10) and they were way too big. I do have to wear a belt with them because the fabric does stretch a bit when I wear them. I work as a volunteer at the Morton Arboretum out in the woods and these pants have taken quite a beating yet they always look like new when I wash them. I wasn't happy with their price but the quality makes it well worth it.

I think a good pair of overalls is a life saver. I have a pair from a farmgirl that I think I have had ten years. It was a swap from here. She added appliquéd flowers to a set of denim short overalls. I still wear them in the garden, and my dd wants to steal them to wear out! A good apron is a lifesaver. I love Tractor Supply for clothing, too, for inexpensive chore ware.

Lisa- Yep - I did pick up a carhart jacket at TSC this spring when on sale. Something that will take a beating and I don't care how it ends up looking. Men's clothing is a little easier in outer wear(at least for me). Many of these companies have pretty limited womens lines (another point for Duluth for sure). Will have to look into Schmidts!

I really like my Duluth work pants. Great quality, but as you say pricey. I treated myself to a couple pair of underware too. very nice. I have not tried any shirts yet. Jackets I get carhart at our local farm store. They are pricey as well, but warm. I do wait for sales to get them a little cheaper.

Sara- Great suggestion! I find the shirts good (worn open over another), but...well perhaps it's the body type. I can't ever find men's clothing that fits the hips...and the waist. Too many curves I guess :)

D, I'm with you about Duluth. I got 2 pairs of pants to take to Iceland, and I'm hooked! I've gotten another couple of pairs on closeout; the colors were maybe not what I would have chosen, but I got for the quality. Also, we have a store in town that gets name brands at markdown and I was able to snag 3 of their flannels for $6.99 each.
If you have a TSC (Tractor Supply), they have decent work clothes, but also best to wait for sales. We like the Carhartt brand, Schmidts workwear, and like Sara said, thrift store finds when possible.
Also check out Sportsmans Guide magazine on line. They have a ton of clothing that is outdoor related.
Welcome to farm!

D, I look for my work around the house & garden clothes at the Salvation Army and thrift shops. I'm partial to well worn men's denim and chambray work shirts. You might want to check out the sales at farm & ranch stores.
