The more I remodel my home, the more detestable the fake veneer cabinets become. They look nasty and cheap, but I don't have the spare thousands lying around to buy all new cabinets, so I'm looking for ideas and a small crumb of hope. I am decorating and wall papering the kitchen a pretty Country French theme, with a bit of shabby chic farm house on the side and the cabinets are just awful looking.

Annika, do a test where it won't show. See if it sucks up paint or if you have to sand it to take hold of the paint. I have run into the both ways it the pass.

I have done what Kate said with our kitchen cabinets. It looks really nice. I put a sealant only on one cabinet to see how it looks, but didnt like the light shine of it. I wanted more of a matte look & they dont sell something like that in matte. So I didnt do the others. I am planning on going back & doing that to the rest. I am actually going to touch up paint them again first. Mine do have some chips in the paint. Mostly on the silverware drawers we use a lot. They are scratched at the top. The kids arent very careful though. I think the sealant would protect them better as well. We painted ours black. I did a nice green at first like I saw on some at Home Depot, but didnt work for us. I love the black. We also took crown molding & framed the tops & bottoms of our cabinets to dress them up. Our were too boxy looking. Good luck with yours. It's amazing what paint will do. Ours were so ugly before.

My sis painted over her oak vaneers with an antiqued ivory crackle finish and then added new knobs. They look European country now.

I painted over our old dark fake wood cabinets, using white oil-based melamine paint. It's smelly, but worked great. I used a small sponge roller, but had to use a small brush for the inset grooves in the design on the front of the doors. Cleanup was with turpentine, though, but the oil-based paint is so much more durable and doesn't leave so many brush marks.

It was easier to remove the doors and work on them in another area, too.

I have found that most things will hold up well with an oil based polyurethane (not water based . . . not near as strong!) I painted our bathroom cabinets at our old house with just latex paint, but then went over it with polyurethane and it held up great. I even painted our hideous linoleum floor and did three coats of polyurethane and they held up great. The oil based polyurethane just seems to "lock" in the paint . . . or in Kathie's case brown bags. There is another website called thegardenweb.com. It has a section on decorating that is great for ideas. Might want to check it out. But be warned, some of those women can be really "itchy" if you know what I mean! So just go for ideas, but maybe avoid offering too many thoughts or opinions. We have such a family feel here that other forums don't have!

Best of luck!

Annika-

Can you take a picture of your cabinets so we can see exactly what you are talking about?

Greetings and good luck, I know your frustration we have an old
farm house that previous owners "renovated" the kitchen in. I hate it the items that were installed are of the pressboard type, the bottoms of the drawers fall out if you put anything heavy in them. The whole arrangement does not fit me or my things, not enough storage. I have people keeping their eys out for some old glass front type cabinets that will go all the way to the ceiling. These were popular years ago.

My thought for your cabinets would be to remove the door or the center of the door if possible and make some pretty fabric panels. I have not done this, but have seen it done and it looked very nice.
That might be an option.

Best of luck, Barbara

Ohhhhh, Kathie, that paper counter top is so pretty and clever. I saw that on another thread.

Fabric over the cabinets would be inexpensive and pretty too!!!!

Everyone here is so creative!!!!!

Kathie-

I love the fact that you decoupaged your dog's Kennel! You know that MaryJane put wall paper in her hen house, right? :D

I did use Polyurethene..Several coats actually.. & i let each coat dry before i aded on another one..

It's been Several months now & it STILL looks the same!
I probablyshould have done a few more coats ..but i'm just not very patient..so I rushed the job.. But yet.. it DOES hold up really well..

i don't cut on it or anything..because yes.. i believe i would cut through it.. I think i do baby it a bit more then a normal counter top.. But.. more sealer.. & i think i wouldn't..

Also.. someone asked me if i roll dough out on it once too..
& no.. i don't.. i'm lucky enough to have a huge beautiful table right in the kitchen that i can do that at.. But i think the flour or dough may cathch more then it should.. As there are places that are raised a bit higher then others.. i think though if i took the time to sand them down.. & again.. just coated a few more times.. i'd be fine..

But you see it.. It really is perfect!
I love it! & get More compliments from this effect too!

But then.. I also Decoupaged my Dogs Kennel .. !

I love that idea! Did you just varnish it down? How careful do you have to be of knicks and scratches?

Ok.. here.. This is what i did to my kitchen Counter tops..
i lived with plywood counters for nearly two years.. because i wasn't sure what i wanted to do.. so i finally said screw this.. I'm not spending alot of money on something that i'm not even sure i want.. &
i went to town tearing up & glued down pieces of brown paper bags!

This was the finished result!

& this is the right side of the sink...

What do ya think??

Are you talking about the Kitchen Cabinets?
i think thats where you were going ..

Well.. i seem to be always steering toward the bit off the wall decorating ideas.. so..
if you ALREADY do hate them now.. & think that they are hidious..
Do something really out there with them!

There are so many great ideas..
Take the centers out completely.. replace them with chicken wire.. or glass.. OR even Fabric.. & if you go with the fabric.. you can gather it at the center.. so you can still get a peak of whats inside..
OR...
Cover the fronts.. with..
Fabric.. OR paper..
I've seen both..
Fabric looks really sweet.. But if you do paper.. you could even go with a decoupage look.. you know tear or cut your paper.. OR Pages of books.. OR pictures even!! OR brown paper bags!!
What ever you decide to go with for a Theme!

Then I would Polyurethene what ever you do.. you know.. so you can wipe them down still.. i have pictures somewhere of what i did to my kitchen counters.. let me see it i can find them.. you COULD do this on your cabinet doors.. !

Who says we have to go with wood? or wood looking cabinets even?

What you have is probably particle board or MDF board which is, as you said, pressed saw dust and glue mixed together to make a "wood" that can be used for cheaper grade items. It should be pretty paintable but I would suggest the primer to help seal the MDF or particle board.

Sorry to hear about the arthritis. I know my family suffers from that too! AND I know all about project fever! I have been know to stay up all night sometimes!

Well this is what I want to past up my kitchen with. I love the cute little olives. I had to take out two of the cabinets in my mud room to put in the new w/d and they seem to be made of some kind of pressed sawdust type "wood" and are covered with a paper wood pattern veneer. I haven't got rid of them yet so I took a second look. I should be able to prime and paint them. This destruction/remodeling thing is addictive, even if you can only afford to do it a little at a time. I've been working on the kitchen a lot, so the cabinets are starting to get on my nerves. Inexpensive is one thing, but I am not into cheap. My pantry looks beautiful now and I've gathered up all of my sewing and stitching gear into one place. (I do a lot of my sewing in the kitchen because it has the best light) When you live in a small place, efficient storage is a must. Thank you ladies for the links and advice!

Alee, I am likely getting arthritis or something in my neck and shoulder (everyone else in my family has it, I guess it's my turn), so I'm up a lot at night...plus I was trying to finish up a project and just "couldn't" stop

Annika,
Have you tried taking a door off, remove the handle or knobs, wash it really well to remove years of grease and dirt that seems to weld itself onto the cabinets. Let that completely dry and then lightly sand it to "rough it up". Then paint a good primer over it.
See if the paint "sticks". It should. Then proceed to your color of choice. Probably will need at least two coats.
I recommend trying this on a back side of a door incase it doesn't turn out well.
I also recommend buying a good paint. Don't spend ten bucks on a gallon, spend the extra money. Just my experience.

Also, see what the paint geeks at the Home Depot or wherever you shop say too.

I have painted a lot of stuff in my day and haven't wrecked anything yet.

Are your cabinets laminated? If so, check out this article, which is very specific in how-to: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/09/21/AR2005092100593.html

I have laminated cabinets and dream of painting them. But so far just a dream. It's far down on my list of things to do. And I'd rather be making yo-yos!

Hi Annika!

Up in the middle of the night with me and Nora, huh?

Do your cabinets have a wood veneer to them?
