Ugh. We seem to have a black cloud over us this year. Thanksgiving Day, our precious little bunny girl, Patches, was fine. The next morning, I knew instantly when I went to feed her that she was in distress. My daughter and I rushed (in our pjs) to the vet. They were waiting for us. They sent us to a specialist who handles bunnies - 1.5 hours away in Black Friday traffic.

The vet was wonderful.

First off, they figured it was cancer, since she wasn’t spade. When we got her, I called the vet to get an appointment but they said they didn’t recommend spaying unless she was going to be around male bunnies. This vet said most dog vets don't want to try to spay bunnies as they are so sensitive, but 80 percent of females that don't get spayed get ovarian cancer.

We did an X-ray to see. Another thing bunnies get is GI, and untreated it can kill them in six hours.

Our vet determined our girl had suffered kidney failure do to old age, that she was in good shape, just OLD.

We have had her six years, and thought she was only 6 months when we rescued her. The vet said for a rabbit her size that is pretty old, and really there was no way of knowing for sure how old she was when we got her. She never grew larger so she may have been older.

We had to put her down, sadly. She died in my daughter’s arms, wrapped in a cozy warm pink blanket.

The good thing is it happened on a Friday, a holiday when my daughter was home and not in school. She died with her people who loved her, not alone, and comfortably. Putting an animal down is AWFUL and never gets easier. The vet office was wonderful, and I received a hand written card from the vet herself, with wonderful, comforting words. That meant a lot to us.

I was so proud of my daughter. She is sixteen and is braver and stronger than I was at that age. The bunny was her baby. If you read the Suburban Farmgirl Blog, you might remember her.

I know some bunnies are raised for food, but she was an indoor pet bunny with TONS of personality, and we loved her very much. She begged for treats, growled when she was displeased and loved to be snuggled. She had been abused by the people who had her before. We were told the little kids in the family would try to hold her by her ears! We only gave her love and spoiled her.

I don’t think we will get another one, but will remember our sweet bunny girl with lots of funny memories.

Okay...no more sad things happening for awhile, I hope!

I'm so sorry for your loss. We raised pet rabbits when I was a kid. They were very smart and loved to play with toys in the yard. Hugs to you and your daughter.

Awww. Thank you Winnie, Heather, and Krista. We do miss her, especially coming and going because she had her crate by the door we went in and out most. She would always greet us.

Krista, I am hoping for a much better year! This has had lots of ups but too many downs for sure!

So sorry you lost patches. It sounds like you were a blessing to her and she was a blessing to your family.

Nicole, I am glad too that your daughter was off school so that bunny was held in the arms of someone she knew and trusted. It is always hard to lose a beloved fur baby.

Hi Sara,

I never knew they could have so much personality, either! She was definitely a “diva bunny”, lol.

Nicole, I'm so sorry. I never knew bunnies would interact with people.
