This question is for all of you farmgirl deer hunters. I am preparing to go deer hunting this fall and KY has a centerfire rifle season. I do not own my own rifle and am trying to decide what would be a good choice. The Remington Model 7 in the youth version looks like it might be a good fit, but I want to know what else is available before I make a definite decision.

hidonna, my personal favorite is a youth model remington model 7, 7mm-08. i use it for moose and caribou so i am certain it would also be good for deer. it is a very accurate little gun with very little kick. let me know what one you decide on. peace connie in alaska

My sis shoots a .30-.30; I think it's an H&R?? She's small but strong & likes that gun. She killed that big buck (photo in MJ's Outpost book) with it. From what I know, a .243 is good for deer - won't give a big kick. Obviously, I'm not expert, just wanted to throw in my 2 cents!

A .30-.30 is a good rifle for deer - especially good for starters.
For a little more boom and power, a 7mm is a good choice and still not too much.
Further up the line is a 30-06.
If you know somebody who reloads - you can get your ammo just the way you want it for the hunting conditions, power, speed accuracy and distance.

30-30 is very limited on range. 30-06 has alot mroe recoil than 7mm-08 or 30-30.
