My Butternut Squash plant has 3 tiny little squash plants on it. They are maybe 3 inches long. The butternut squashes I have seen before are over a foot long. How long do you think it will be before the squash are harvest ready?

Alee, unless there is more than one Billings, you are way up north. When is your first frost date? My guess is that they will not be ready in time. When did you plant them? Some of the stuff that takes a long time to produce and mature, I start in the greenhouse. Gives them a month or more head start. I love butternut squash but it is a battle between me and the squash bugs.

Hi Belle-

We will start to get frost anywhere between Mid September and mid October. Once the little butternuts start forming- how long does it take them to reach maturity?

Alee, squash is long growing. I think it may be 120 days from germination to harvest, could also be in the 90's. I found one growing out of my compost pile with a couple of little squash on it, but here in so cal we can harvest into Nov.

Alee, the Burpee website says a butternut takes from 75-85 days depending on the variety. After I read that I then thought isn't that from the day it was planted? I do know they grow pretty fast once the fruit is set. I would think you should be able to harvest some good sized squash before your first frost.

You post got me wondering about mine so I just went out to check. Mine is JUST now flowering so you're way ahead of me!

Happy eating!
Audrey

One of my favorite plants is the pumpkin. They grow so fast! I swear you can sit in the garden and watch them get bigger and bigger...
