| Does anyone have one that they have made. I know the store bought kind has some bad ingredients in it, and the ones at health food stores can be a bit pricey. |

Have you tried a shampoo bar? I have used Chagrin Valley: http://www.chagrinvalleysoapandcraft.com/shambar.htm and you can order samples. There are also some good recipes here: http://organic.lovetoknow.com/Organic_Shampoo_Recipes.
It is really going to depend on your hair type. I know plenty of people that just use baking soda and vinegar on their hair. You mix 1/4-1/2 cup of baking soda to enough water to make a paste and scrub into your hair. Rinse. Then add 1/2-1 TBS of apple cider vinegar to 1 cup of water throughout your hair, let it sit a minute, and give it a quick rinse with cool water and it acts like a conditioner. You can also add honey and/or herbs to the vinegar rinse. If your hair is dark rosemary is nice, it you are blonde chamomile is good. If you add the herbs you will boil the water, add the herbs and let it steep 15 minutes and add the vinegar and/or honey to that. When your hair is dry the vinegar smell will vanish.

| Thanks Tanna, I'll give it a try. My hair is in pretty good condition. I am a natural blond that is now practically white if I don't add any color. I don't go gray,I turn a almost white blond color that makes me look washed out. I used to use the expensive salon shampoos and I know they aren't good for my hair and I really can't justify the expense anyway. |

Believe it or not, I just use borax as shampoo and vinegar as conditioner. I mix about 2 Tbsp of borax with warm water, shake it up in a jar, transfer to a plastic cup (I broke the jar in the shower once), and pour slowly, rubbing it in. Then rinse. I keep vinegar in a spray bottle and then I spray my hair with vinegar (scented with essential oil), leave in about a minute and rinse. I know it sounds crazy...but it's crazy the things you find when you don't have a lot of money. It actually made my hair more soft than it's ever been!

I make my own shampoo bar with rosemary essential oil and bits of rosemary throughout---Rosemary is very good for your hair! And I add a touch of Peppermint essential oil. It is a very gentle bar of soap-Lots of Lather! And, it rinses very clean!
I never use any over the counter shampoo-it "strips" your hair of natural oils making it dry and brittle.

I do the backing soda and apple cider vinegar and wouldn't go back. I had to use regular shampoo at my sisters a couple of months ago and my hair was flat and greasy looking after wards

I use the baking soda, apple cider vinegar and LOVE the way my hair feels. I think my hair is less oily since using this as compared to regular shampoo.

I use a shampoo bar from Wash your Mouth out Soap (www.washyourmouthoutsoap.com) and apple cider vinegar as a rinse once per week.
I also have a friend who does the borax/vinegar method.

I've been searching for info on this for awhile now. I'm trying to rid our home of all the nasty chemicals in cleaners and personal care products. I bought some Dr. Bronner's Liquid Castille soap over the weekend. Tonight I tried using it as a total body wash. My skin feels great, but my hair turned into a greasy matted mess in the shower. I ended up just using my regular sulfate-free shampoo to get it back to "normal". Did it turn into a mess simply because the soap was trying to clean off all the junk from my regular products? What are your thoughts? I really want to make this work...just need some input.

I've only used baking soda on my hair when I felt like my hair needed a good stripping. I was afraid using it too much would damage the hair. I've used vinegar for a rinse before, but my hair is so cantankerous that I have to have some sort of conditioner/leave-in conditioner or I'm not able to get a comb or pick through it.

I am trying to use the Dr. Bonner's soap too. It does make your hair feel matted, but if you use a conditioner rinse (I'm gonna try the vinegar thing now!) it is bearable, though still feels like stuff is in your hair. But my scalp feels clean, and I feel like instead of needing to put moose or styling gel in my hair, the residue left by the soap acts as that. I have really fine frizzy hair, and normal hair gels are too heavy and make me look like I have a perm that is growing out (flat on top, curly on bottom). The Dr. Bonner soap smoothes my hair out and is still light enough to not weigh my hair down, so I'm going for it even though it does feel different. I don't think you are doing anything wrong. Their website recommends some kind of conditioner rinse, and they sell some too.

I make shampoo for my daughter, who has lots of curly, thick, on the dry side, hair. 1 cup water, 1/2 cup coconut soap, 1/4 olive oil.
I have just started doing the 'no poo', and am happy with the results. My hair, straight, heavy, lots of it but thinner, would get greasy after one day. I did not use conditioner.
Now I take about 1/4 cup of baking soda, rub into my wet hair. Rinse well, then I rinse it with apple cider vinegar wash. I put about 2-3 tbls of vinegar into a mason jar, fill it up with water, and rinse my hair. I let it sit for a few moments, then wash it out with water. I am on my 3rd wash, and really like it. My hair does not get greasy after 3 days, just heavier, so I wash it.

Funny you should start this thread. Quite sometime ago (a few years I think) there was a thread here about this very subject and I was thinking last night that I really need to go back to using the baking soda/ vinegar/ honey routine. It left my hair so nice and soft. I too am a blond and will someday turn white I am sure as my mom, grandma and mom's two sisters did. Right now it is still the platinum color.
The only thing I don't like about using this is though the honey is great as a conditioner my hair still gets very tangled and it is an ordeal to comb it out. Hope you find something you like. If I can find the old thread I will post the link as there was tons of good info on there.

Best thing I have found is liquid Castile Soap. I use the peppermint for my hair and the lavender for my body. After years and years of searching for the perfect way to clean myself from head to toe, I ran across an article in Mother Earth Living talking about how we trick our bodies into under-producing or over-producing oils by the type of soaps and shampoos we use. I switched to Castile and all my troubles went away after years and years of hair and skin problems.

I have used the Castile soap on my hair with no problems. I always use the vinegar rinse. I never tried the borax for washing my hair. I also try to think of ways to save money and don't like wasting money on expensive hair products. The only thing with Castile soap is that if you dye your hair it can strip the dye out. I don't worry about that because I don't dye my hair.
