I'm sure this question has been asked before, but I can't find the answer so I'm gonna ask again, Where do you ladies buy lye for soap making? I have found acouple of places but it seems like you have to buy ALOT at a time and I only need a little ( I don't have anybody that would want to share it with me)and I'd like to know that I'm buying from a reputable place. Thanks and I'll keep searching for some reciepes Liz

I have gotten it from Texas Natural Supply. Menards now carries it again, in our neck of the woods.

Liz try your local grocery stores first- although ours don't carry it anymore, in some states they still do. Also, try hardware stores. Do you have True Value? I believe that I got my last cans from either Tractor Supply or Country Max. And, I am about to go to our local mennonite bulk food/farm market/fabric store to stock up. They just got a shipment in, and it doesn't last long. Just keep looking locally. Sometimes some of the older, smaller mom and pop grocery stores are the easiest place to find it.

you do know that in a real pinch if you pour water through a container of wood ashes, the stuff that you drain out a hole in the bottom of the container is lye. That's a really old fashioned way of getting it. Something my Dad's grandma used to use.

I get mine at Lehmans. They charge extra to ship the sodium Hydroxide, but it the stuff for making soap. You have to make sure the lye for cleaning drains doesn't contain other ingredients. It should be 100% sodium Hydroxide. This is something you want to be 100% sure on.

I found some at Menards in the drain cleaning section of their cleaner aisle. They only sell it in 1 pound containers as far as I could tell. I also found some at Tractor Supply. I haven't tried my grocery store yet since I can get it at those places. The lye at TSC is cheaper than at Menards.

All that I have read said to stay away from lye for drains...pure lye is better for you then all the chemicals that is in the one's that clean your drains. It is better to stay more natural for your skin. I order my lye at snowdrifts

I am so excited! I'm going to the extension office tonight to take a soapmaking class! We're using lye (Cold process) and I can't WAIT to learn how to do it!

I just bought some "Kleen- Out 100% Lye from BetterBilt CHemicals" today in a one pound container since the stuff that I normally bought is sold out and discontinued. I tried looking it up online and they don't even list the lye Kleen Out on their website. They went to some sulfuric acid stuff. I'm wondering if this stuff is old and once they sell out that is it or what. Anyone have any experience with this brand for soap making? Thanks!

I used to get Red Devil brand from my local grocery store when I was in Georgia. I haven't seen any locally, but the chemical store online should have some.
